Re: [ha-Safran]: Reader's advisory question
I'm not sure about its resemblance to The Physician, but for superb historical fiction, with rich detail, vivid characterization, and inspiring, informative Judaic content, it's hard to beat A Journey to the End of the Millennium by A. [ha-Safran]: RE: More information on AJL Constitution
Hayim, Ted, Bernard, et al., I'm perhaps the wrong person to be addressing your concerns, as I was unable to attend the recent meeting at which the revisions to the AJL constitution were discussed. But as no other response has yet appeared on the list, I'll clarify as much as I'm able to. PDF files of the current constitution and the proposed draft constitution (with highlights of the changes) as well as a summary and a detailed description of the proposed changes can all be accessed on the AJL web at http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/about/constitution.htm. The AJL executive board is composed of the elected officers of the two divisions (each with a president, vice-president and secretary) and of the association as a whole (president, vice-president/president-elect, immediate past-president, vice-president for membership, vice-president for publications, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, and treasurer). The Webmaster, the various editors, the listowner of Hasafran, chapter representatives, et al. serve with the board on the association's council. (All this is described in the current constitution and is clarified, but not changed, in the revised draft.) With one exception, the changes in the proposed draft constitution are not substantive, but merely clarify and formalize existing practices. The exception is the addition of a provision for electronic balloting. Electronic balloting was discussed last June at the members' meeting, but's possible that more discussion of this topic is needed before an informed decision can be made. I hope that helps. If you are fan of docs, the you know the work of Ms. Lazin, a past top honcho at MTV, an award winning filmmaker in Tupac, a Camp Ramah alum, and if you are me, the award winning director of a Stanford film on Flappers. IN this film, sponsored by the Spielberg Foundation, we learn about children who wrote diaries during the Shoah. I havent seen it, but the Sun Sentinel wrote: There's something about this documentary that feels a little too pop for its serious subject matter -- maybe the all-Moby soundtrack, or the voiceovers by actors including Elijah Wood and Kate Hudson. So it comes as no surprise to learn that it will broadcast next month on MTV. Hosted by actor-director Zach Braff (Garden State), the small screen will probably be a better home for this brief portrait of youth cut short during World War II. Director Lauren Lazin, Oscar nominee for 2003's Tupac: Resurrection, has adapted a book by Alexandra Zapruder (granddaughter of Kennedy assassination figure Abraham Zapruder). The diary readings are sad without having to try. But, despite the high-voltage star contributions, they don't make as big an impact as they should. And the stock footage of Nazis marching grows a bit numbing. The most notable exception is the reading of an anonymous teenage girl's diary, which sounds like it was read by contributor Brittany Murphy (Sin City). As the girl discusses in heartbreaking detail the daily reality of starving to death in a ghetto, it is impossible not to be moved. If nothing else, I'm Still Here puts myriad youthful faces on unthinkable suffering. It reminds us that Anne Frank was not the only young person to perish for absolutely no good reason. [ha-Safran]: Elazar online catalog?
Please can someone tell me whether there is a library online catalog anywhere that uses the Elazar system? I'm organising and cataloging a small synagogue library (about 1,500 books) in Israel. I'm doing it on an Access database as we can't afford to buy professional library management software. At present I have been assigning Library of Congress numbers to the books from the L of C online catalog. However, I would prefer to use the Elazar system as our collection is entirely Judaica. I found a link on David Elazar's website to Temple Sinai library, which offers an Elazar cataloging service. I emailed them, but have not received a reply to my enquiry - so I don't know if this service is presently available. I'm not yet a professional librarian (am studying librarianship at Oranim College); so would very much appreciate any advice.
