[ha-Safran]: Three Wishes

2006-03-02 Thread Eli Wise
This news item that Amalia cites should bring a response. What will
happen when this book starts appearing in libraries in the United
States? It is so incredible that people don't see the bigger picture
concerning suicide bombers. They try to somewhat justify the anger
and frustration that the Palestinians feel and find nothing wrong
with bombing of civilians as an outlet. The academy awards have a
picture, Paradise Now as a nominee. That picture tries to give a
sympathetic look at the suicide bombers. This could be the start of
additional works addressing this issue. Shouldn't we as Jewish
librarians show our support for the efforts of the Canadian Jewish
Congress? Remember the fire bombing of the library in Montreal which
was clearly an act of terrorism, what ever became of that? Did we as
Jewish library professionals make our voices heard loud enough? The
American Library Association in their SRRT roundtable has a
bibliography on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which contains
mostly anti-Israel materials.

We are in a profession that understands the power of the written
word. It behooves us to be vigilant regarding the publication of
materials that glorify and sympathize with people who not only want
to destroy us as Jews and the State of Israel but on a wider scale
the western world. I suggest that the Association of Jewish Libraries
make some kind of a statement of protest and support for the Canadian
Jewish Congress. It might give us some practice if we will eventually
have to deal with it.

Suicide bombing endorsed in kids book
The Ontario Library Association refused to drop from its
recommended list a book that includes Palestinian
children endorsing suicide bombing. Palestinian and Israeli children
speak about suicide bombings, anti-Semitism,
guns and soldiers in "Three Wishes," by Deborah Ellis. "In our eyes,
the book is perfectly good and we stand by our
selection committee and the rights of children to read this book,"
said Larry Moore, the association's executive
director. The Canadian Jewish Congress asked for the book to be
removed from a list of recommending reading for
8-11 year-olds, saying it does not provide young readers with enough
context. "They speak about suicide bombing
and killing Israelis as suitable choices to make and as acts worthy
of emulating," said Len Rudner, the CJC's
national director of community relations. A Palestinian girl
discusses her sister, a suicide bomber, as a martyr in
paradise and suggests she will follow in her footsteps. A Palestinian
boy says, "Killing an Israeli will make me feel
glad. It will make me feel strong." Only one school board, the York
District board just north of Toronto, has pulled
the book from the list, while many others have declined to do so.

[ha-Safran]: re: Promised land diaries?

2006-03-02 Thread Heidi Estrin
The Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee received a few of the Promised
Land Diaries to evaluate over the past few years. We generally felt
that they had a Christian flavor, although they didn't knock you over
the head with it. They're certainly not great literature - it's
series formula fiction, if you know what I mean. I think you
shouldn't order them sight unseen - try to get ahold of one and read
it first to make sure if it would fit into your collection. There
are a few Jewish diary type novels but not a series like this one... a pity.

due by June 9, 2006

To NISO Voting Members:

ISO TC46 has issued 6 ballots for their five year systematic review. Five
of these standards are on transliteration; one is a general vocabulary
standard. Those of you who are not interested in transliteration may still
want to look at the general vocabulary standard ISO 5127). Vote
recommendations and comments on these ballots are due to NISO by June 9,
2006. Since these are systematic ballots, the vote options are: 1)
withdraw, 2) revise/amend, 3) confirm, or 4) confirm, with correction of
errors.

Re: [ha-Safran]: AJL Constitution Revisions

2006-03-02 Thread Bernard Katz
My apology to Susan and to everyone - in my zeal, I erred by attributing
two messages posted by Susan Dubin Feb. 27 and Mar. 1 to Nancy Sack.

If I've understood the clauses helpfully provided by Susan's posting that
pertain to amending the Constitution, then it may be that the
proposed text cannot be changed at this stage. Susan, is that how you read it?

The one thing that may solve this problem, or at least get a revision
to the floor of the AGM, is dependant on which set of rules the AGM
operates under. Is it Roberts Rules of Order, Nancy? If so, Roberts
sets out a few possibilities for amending a motion which proposes a
change to an organization's Constitution from the floor of the AGM -
as I recall - as long as the amendment raised from the floor does not
contradict the original proposed text, which will have gone through
all the required steps for Constitutional change. I'm the
Parliamentarian for the Ontario Library Association and we use
Roberts, but I don't have a copy to hand.

If we can nail this down, then I'll be happy to propose a change in
the text which does not contradict the original proposed text, but clarifies
it along the lines we've been discussing. I don't think there's any
opposition to that - or is there?
B'shalom,
   Bernard.

Re: AJL Constitution Revisions

2006-03-02 Thread Bernard Katz
This is going to be a long posting, and I hope everyone will bear
with me, because I think several things must be said. To begin with,
I must register my disappointment at comments which wash over what
actually has taken place in this discussion, and at explanations that
don't really answer the questions raised by several members.

1. The first that I heard of the process to bring the constitution
into line with legal and other requirements and tidy it up, etc. was
when I got the proposed revision in the mail in late Jan./early Feb.
Perhaps I missed an earlier alert, but please don't "explain" this
away by saying that there was a long process underway for years, or
that there were AGM's where it was noted and progress given, etc.
MANY of us do not make it to the annual conference, and even those
who do get there do not always come to an AGM (though we should).
Also, why wasn't the fact that there was further material posted on
the AJL Web site included in the mailing? Indeed, why weren't the
reasons for the changes clearly spelled out in the mailing?

2. Joy Kingsolver posted a message on Hasafran on Feb. 8 with
information giving an overview of the changes. This was followed by
postings by Hayim and Ted Feb. 8-9, and my own a week later on
Feb.15. All of us asked specific questions about parts of the
proposed revised text, as well as commenting on the process. There
was no immediate response.

3. On Feb. 20, Nancy Sack, our Webmaster, posted a descriptive
message that did not address either the concerns raised about process
or the substantive questions about the text.

4. On Feb. 27, Rebecca Landau posted a message repeating some of
those same textual concerns. This was followed by a posting from
Nancy and then one from Joy. Joy's posting noted "as explained in
other e-mails" - not a very accurate comment given the chronology I
just provided, since before
Feb. 27 only Nancy's Feb. 20 descriptive e-mail had been posted
following the initial set of questions by Hayim, Ted and me. But more
to the point,
Nancy and Joy assured us that there was no intention to
disenfranchise anyone, that the Council was committed to using a
multiple of means for voting, etc. and Joy noted the commitment of
providing kosher meals at conferences as an example of how a
non-constitutional requirement was being followed. There was another
posting by Ted the same day, indicating he was still not satisfied
with the text.

5. On Mar. 1 the posting by Merrily Hart, more or less took the
postilion 'let's just get on with it'. But before she said that, she also said:

Is it time to remind everyone that this is a volunteer organization
and the Board & Council are composed of hard working librarians, who
take on the time-consuming burden of managing AJL without any financial
remuneration and without any dreams of glory, either?

As one of the people who raised concerns about both text and process,
I certainly don't need reminding. I've been a member for 40 years and
taken positions here in Toronto and supported AJL during the 3
conventions which have taken place here over those years.
Constitutional changes are serious and deserve to be treated
seriously and in a process which reflects the
voluntary and democratic basis of our organization. It does no one
any good, Merrily, to say "Several different board members have addressed your
questions via HaSafran, several times by now" in response (I assume
to Ted's Feb. 27 comments), when as I've just shown there were only
two Board members who responded. Last time I checked, two is not
synonymous with "several".

Again from Merrily, in the same posting:

Yes, the Board should have let members know a few months ago that they
were considering updating the constitution and should have included a
little more information in the mailing. Yes, an official response to
questions should have been posted more speedily on HaSafran. This is
   hardly criminal neglect.

This is downright insulting to anyone with intelligence, Merrily.
Have those of us who have voiced concerns and criticisms said or
suggested "criminal neglect" was involved? You've used a rhetorical
device to just swoosh away the matter. But I must say that my
experience with *some* of the people who volunteer their time and do
good work for us in the AJL
follows the pattern of your posting - if members raise questions
they're just being obstreperous and nasty, so ignore them, or say we
should "move on to other issues", etc. Well, I don't accept that.

It's been very interesting to me over the years how often, as one of
those persnickety members, I get personal e-mail from other members
after I've raised something publically in Hasafran. I'm sorry to have
to say this, but I'll go further - members have told me that they
have been dunned and otherwise negatively dealt with by some of our
associations leaders over the years after they raised an issue or
asked a po

[ha-Safran]: re evaluating websites

2006-03-02 Thread Yeshivah Secondary Library
Hi Marion
I used those sites in a lesson teaching boys about evaluating
websites and information they see on the web. We talked about topics
such as bias, relevance, how to verify information you find on the
web etc. The boys responded very well when I showed them some of
those sites and asked them how they would know if they were genuine
or not. I also prepared a sheet where they had to research a Jewish
topic using some sites and evaluate the usefulness of those sites. It
teaches them critical thinking skills. I prepared a power point
presentation on the topic which I ma happy to share. Does that
clarify the matter for you? Regards
