From: Stuart Schnee [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: author of OFF THE DERECH: WHY OBSERVANT JEWS LEAVE JUDAISM I am pleased to notify you that Faranak Margolese, who will be visiting North America to speak about her new book entitled Off the Derech: Why Observant Jews Leave Judaism. She will be visiting the Southern California and the NY metro area. This book looks at the phenomenon of Orthodox Jews leaving Jewish religious observance. Based on over 500 interviews with formerly Orthodox Jews as well as educators and Rabbis the book offers a fascinating look at a trend which is not often looked at publicly. It is a ground breaking book and pre-pub reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. A press release is attached. Rabbi Hershel Schachter, after reading Off the Derech: Why Observant Jews Leave Judaism, wrote: The Rabbis of the Talmud understood that included in our mitzvah to love G-d is to act and to speak in such a way as to get others to love G-d as well. This fascinating book can serve as a Mussar Sefer for all observant Jews regarding how to act and to speak in such a way as not to turn others away from religious observance. Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski submitted this take: Off the Derech is an eye opener. Thousands of years ago, the prophet Isaiah said, 'Surely you see, but you fail to know The heart of this nation is fattened, its ears are heavy and its eyes are sealed (6:9-10).' author, singer and educator David Zeller available for events
David Zeller is one of my favorite storytellers. Jack Canfield, co-creator of the New York Times best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series Author, singer and educator Rabbi David Zeller is available for events in June, August and late October/November 2006. David will be focusing on his new book The Soul of The Story: Meetings with Remarkable People (ISBN 1580232728 ) which was published recently by Jewish Lights. Thoughtful and endearing, provocative and witty, the book is filled delightful stories which recall David's meetings with the likes of Carl Jung, Shlomo Carlebach, Alan Watts, Sri Pad Baba, the Mother (Sri Aurobindo Ashram), Carlos Castaneda and many others, well known and unknown and the experiences and teachings that ultimately allowed him to rediscover his own spiritual heritage. (please see http://davidzeller.org/book http://davidzeller.org/book for more info). David has developed an international reputation as a musician, lecturer, and workshop leader in Jewish mysticism, spirituality and meditation, as well as in transpersonal psychology (the psychology of body, emotion, mind, and soul). Whether he is singing or teaching, David's work focuses on touching the heart as much as the mind and his quiet presence informs his presentations with a unique power. [Hasafran]: D.E.A.R.
--- Message requiring your approval -- From: Linda Silver [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: D.E.A.R. As some of you might know, April 12 has been designated as D.E.A.R, Drop Everything and Read Day, in honor of the 90th birthday of the acclaimed childrens author, Beverly Cleary. It is co-sponsored by the National Education Association, National PTA, and the Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC) of ALA. D.E.A.R. Day is being heavily promoted and has a website on which a D.E.A.R. Day Resource Kit is available. Who could argue with encouraging kids to read? EXCEPT that D.E.A.R. Day falls on Erev Pesah, when Jewish schools will be closed! It might not be a bad idea to point this out to the three sponsoring organizations, who obviously were not aware of our holiday when D.E.A.R. was planned. Linda R. RE: Library Renovation
We are in the process of organizing a renovation to the Toronto Jewish Public Library. Have found a local company specializing in moving library. I found it through our provincial Library organization [Ontario Library Association]. No doubt your local ALA affiliate or public library would have names. RE: Library Renovation
Please post all comments to the group, as I am in the same situation and would be very interested in the responses. Thank you, Etta Gold -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jane Zande Sent: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 3:15 PM To: hasafran@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Subject: Library Renovation Hello, Our library will be undergoing a renovation next year. Are there other synagogue librarians who have been through this? I would like to hear about your experiences. What did you do with your book collection while the renovation was taking place? We have a collection of about 15,000. I am working closely with the architect and our planning committee, but would appreciate hearing about the experiences of other synagogue librarians.
