[ha-Safran]: New library

2006-10-11 Thread Diane Eidelman
Hi everyone,

Thanks for your responses on where to begin. It is strange trying to
plan a library with a committee of nonlibrarians. Is there anyone
out there that has a small library (4000 volumes or less) with no
real cataloging records? Has anyone just tried Excel or Access and
been successful in keeping a basic shelf list and location? Money is
an issue. I’m sure it is with many of you. But I want to do the right thing.

Thank you again.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia Judaica run time error

2006-10-11 Thread Heather Rolen
Thanks Dan. I had seen this fix online. Unfortunately, we provide EJ for
our students here and are not able to run this set of commands every time a
student wants access to EJ. Changing the memory allocation affects too many
of our other databases. If any one knows of another work around, I'd love
to know about it.

Thank you,
Heather

Re: [ha-Safran]: Encyclopedia Judaica run time error

2006-10-11 Thread Dan Wyman
Heather--

We ran into this as well; this issue is that the old EJ can't run on
computers that have TOO MUCH (!) memory. We came up with this
(somewhat complicated) fix:

1. go to RUN on the "start" menu.

2. type in (in capital letters): MSCONFIG

3. click OK.

4. click on the tab "BOOT.INI"

5. under that menu, click on 'advanced options'

6. it'll bring up a little menu. you'll see a number of boxes. click
the first one MAXMEM. that should pop up a number in the little box
to the right. if this number is higher than 512, you are going to
have problems running the program (this is because the EJ is old and
for some reason cannot run on computers configured with TOO MUCH memory).

7. delete whatever number you have there and instead type in 512.
leave the box clicked.

8. hit OK or CHANGE until you get out of the menus.

9. it will prompt you to restart your computer so that the new memory
number can go into effect. do this.

10. when your computer comes on again, it'll notify you that you've
changed your memory setting. ignore that. use EJ and it should work fine.

11. important: when you are done with EJ, you'll have to set your
computer back to its regular memory setting so that your computer
runs smoothly. to do this, you go and do all of the above steps. when
you get to step 9, type in your regular memory (mine is 1024) and
then UNCLICK the box. then you will be prompted to restart your
computer, etc etc..you'll get the message about having reconfigured
your memory. check and make sure you're running at your max again.
unfortunately you have to do this each time you use EJ because it's
such an old program.

Best of luck & Chag Sameach,

Dan

[ha-Safran]: New Book

2006-10-11 Thread Anne Dublin
Dear AJL friends and colleagues,
I’m delighted to tell you that my new book is hot off the press! The
launch will take place in Toronto on Sun. Oct. 22, 2 p.m., David
Mirvish Books. It would be lovely to see some friendly members of AJL
there. All are welcome. And here’s more information because, after
all, that’s our business:

June Callwood: A Life of Action (Toronto: Second Story Press, 2006),
ISBN 1-897187-14-9, $14.95 CDN/$12.95 US
140 pages with black and white photos, paperback
www.secondstorypress.ca.

This biography is the first ever for young readers on the inspiring
life of June Callwood, one of Canada's greatest writers and
humanitarians. Award-winning author, Anne Dublin, traces the poverty
that June faced during the Depression, the beginning of her
journalistic career, her move to the big city, and her growing
activism that helped homeless people, abused women, teen parents, and
people with AIDS. This book is a must for libraries and classrooms.
Free teachers' guide is available at
www.secondstorypress.ca.

Warm regards,
Anne Dublin, Librarian (& editor of children’s and YA reviews, AJL Newsletter)

Re: [ha-Safran]: High Holiday Services

2006-10-11 Thread Dina Tanners
Those are all good suggestions.

Some more include:

1) Tekiyah from CraignCo

2) The high holidays at B'nai Yeshurun synagogue, a conservative
synagogue in NY

3) URJ has a High Holiday CD with children's voices

I work in a Judaica store (when I am not volunteering with local
Judaica librariers) and we give all libraries 10% off cost on books
and CDs. Simon at Hatikvah is a great source too. Some of our items
