Henie- I can't speak to job possibilities or salaries but I can tell you that the closest library school would be Dominican University, formerly Rosary College. You can read about the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (Yes, they still use library in the name of the school :)) at: http://www.dom.edu/gslis/index.asp?nav_id=2009tnav_id=1003 Since the Graduate Library School at University of Chicago (my alma mater) closed in 1990, that's the only one left in Chicago. [ha-Safran]: Chanukah on the J Site and 142 holiday links
Hi Everyone! Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is observed for eight days, beginning on the evening of the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. This year Chanukah starts at sundown, Friday, December 15, 2006. Chanukah is a wonderful holiday of renewed dedication, faith, hope and spiritual light. It's a holiday that says: Never lose hope. Chanukah commemorates the victory of a small band of Maccabees over the pagan Syrian-Greeks who ruled over Israel. The J Site - Jewish Education and Entertainment http://www.j.co.il has several entertaining features to celebrate Chanukah: Jewish Trivia Quiz: Chanukah What does the Hebrew word Chanukah mean ? What type of foods do we specificaly eat on Chanukah ? What activities are forbidden during Chanukah ? Are woman obligated to light the menorah ? How many candles do we need for all of Chanukah ? Which family was Judah the Maccabee from ? How many branches did the menorah in the temple have ? The above questions are examples from the multiple choice Flash quiz. There are two levels of questions, two timer settings. Both kids and adults will find it enjoyable. Additional Chanukah resources and games on the J site include: Free Chanukah Clipart The Multilingual Hangman Game (English / Hebrew) The Multilingual Word Search Game (English / Hebrew / Russian) My Hebrew Songbook (Hebrew Song Lyrics) My Jewish Coloring Book (online / offline) The J site has something for everyone, but if that is not enough, I posted on my website 142 links about Chanukah, from laws and customs to games and recipes. Site languages include English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Italian. All 142 links have been reviewed / checked this week. The web address is: http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdaych.htm Please forward this message to relatives and friends, so they may benefit from these holiday resources. Enjoy! The new one-volume edition of the ancient sacred text includes seven new indices, including a subject index of some 27,000 entries covering topics such as labor laws, insurance, prison, abortion, kidnapping and righteous gentiles. Another index covers some 6,000 Biblical verses. In this way, the Jerusalem Talmud has become an open book for sages, researchers, Rabbis and ordinary laypeople, who are now able to explore in depth any subject which interests them, said attorney Zvi Preisler, co-editor of the new edition together with Rabbi Shmuel Havlin. The new volume's introduction explains, The Jerusalem Talmud is the Land-of-Israel version of the six orders of the Mishnah - the distillation of all that the Land of Israel sages reflected upon and taught in the approximately 200 years after the codification of the Mishnah. A team of Talmudic scholars examined the entire Jerusalem Talmud for seven years, Preisler said, in order to create the comprehensive indexes. Even in the age of the internet, in which it is possible to find every word of the Holy Scriptures through a database search, there is a great advantage to an index of this kind, commented the editors. The Talmud is comprised of the Oral Law, known as the Mishnah, and a collection of discussions and rabbinic interpretations of the Law, known as the Gemara. The Mishna and Gemara together complete the Talmud - of which there are two. The Jerusalem Talmud, written in both Hebrew and Aramaic, predates by some 200 years the Babylonian Talmud, which the Sages wrote after the Jewish exile from the Land of Israel. As is well-known, the introduction states, the Jerusalem Talmud was outshadowed over the course of many generations by the Babylonian Talmud, and was not even available to many of the early Sages - yet redemption has finally been achieved for the Jerusalem Talmud with the publication of a modern and precise edition of the entire work. The new edition of the Jerusalem Talmud is published by Ketuvim Publishers of Jerusalem, which can be emailed at [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Shmuel Ben-Gad, Gelman Library, George Washington University. Shalom Safranim This may seem like a shot in the dark, but I have in my collection what I recall is a Hebrew book published in the 1920s that consists entirely of photographs of Hebrew/Yiddish authors decoratively framed in wreaths of leaves. I know that it included a picture of Abraham Goldfaden and a picture of Judah Leo Landau (South African rabbi and Hebrew poet/ playwright), both of which I would like to incorporate in a publication. The problem is that I dont know the title or the author, and am not having much luck finding the book under subject. Does this ring any bells for anyone? An anthology of hagiographic stories about famous Talmudic rabbis and medieval figures, it is a window into the religious literature that influenced ordinary Jews in the early modern period. First published in 1602, it was often reprinted and widely disseminated. There is an earlier English translation by M. Gaster, but it is based on the Amsterdam 1735 edition that has additions and changes not found in the original edition. This edition supersedes Gaster as the standard edition of this important text. It presents a reproduction of the Yiddish text of the first edition and a French translation with highly informative annotations on facing pages. The extended introduction of more than 100 pages deals with many aspects of this work, including the printing history of the text, the evolution of the various editions and the sources, composition and structure of the Mayse Bukh. The introduction is the most extensive monograph written on this valuable text. This edition will be indispensable for students and scholars of early modern Yiddish literature and Ashkenazi popular religion. It can be recommended without hesitation for anyone interested in these subjects and should find a place in every research library. Morris M. [ha-Safran]: Druze video
I am looking for a copy of a PBS documentary. It was produced by Ruth Westheimer on the Druze communities of Israel and was shown on PBS this past September. I have not been successful getting a copy with PBS. If anyone can direct me as to where I might be able to get a copy, I would really appreciate it. I would happily pay for shipping supplies. RE: [ha-Safran]: ADL offers reading list on Israel
Hi Freda, True to our mission as information officers, I just forwarded a message that appeared on the JTA newsletter. I do not endorse or evaluate the information, and therefore there is no use in addressing questions to me. As you can imagine, children's books are not a major part of my job description). I suggest that you and other school librarians at SSC develop a similar, more up to date, list and share it with ADL. This is really as it should be! Best, Aviva -Original Message- From: Freda Kleinburd [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, December 04, 2006 11:10 AM To: Aviva Astrinsky Subject: Re: [ha-Safran]: ADL offers reading list on Israel Hi Aviva, I went to the ADL web site and was surprised to find that their list of resources about Israel (not the fiction books for children) was so out of date -- most titles were from the 90's, nothing published in this century! I sent them an email asking if they had plans to update it -- perhaps you'd like to take a look at the site and weigh in also. Re: [ha-Safran]: VHS in libraries
Andrea this is a very good question and one I would like to discuss with added component of the following observation I have made as it relates to DVD and VHS. I am finding that the shelf life of VHS is so much longer than the DVDs. VHS is generally a ore robust medium, compared to the DVD which is more sensitive and fragile. I have looked into leeves and condoms that are supposed to add protection to the DVD, but the inquiries and reading I have done on this seem to support the fact that, it is truly difficult to mke sure the DVD is returned in good condition and ready for use by another patron. The VHS on the other hand can circulate numerous times throughout the years and hold up very well. I am curious if others have made a similar observation, and perhaps others have come across THE way to ensure DVD shelf life. Andrea it is ironic that the very show you want to transfer from video to dvd is one on ethics. This is a copyright question and AJL may want to consult with a copyright attorney. I will be consulting with a leader in the field who is the chair of my Library, David Nimmer (Nimmer on Copyright) ay Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
