RE: [ha-Safran]: Librarian possibilities in Chicago

2006-12-04 Thread Hirsch, David
Henie-
I can't speak to job possibilities or salaries but I can tell you that
the closest library school would be Dominican University, formerly
Rosary College.
You can read about the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science (Yes, they still use library in the name of the school :)) at:
http://www.dom.edu/gslis/index.asp?nav_id=2009tnav_id=1003

Since the Graduate Library School at University of Chicago (my alma
mater) closed in 1990, that's the only one left in Chicago.

Best,
David Hirsch

[ha-Safran]: Chanukah on the J Site and 142 holiday links

2006-12-04 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is observed for
eight days, beginning on the evening of the 25th day of
the Hebrew month of Kislev. This year Chanukah starts
at sundown, Friday, December 15, 2006.
Chanukah is a wonderful holiday of renewed dedication,
faith, hope and spiritual light. It's a holiday that says:
Never lose hope. Chanukah commemorates the victory of a
small band of Maccabees over the pagan Syrian-Greeks who
ruled over Israel.

The J Site - Jewish Education and Entertainment
http://www.j.co.il

has several entertaining features to celebrate Chanukah:

Jewish Trivia Quiz: Chanukah

What does the Hebrew word Chanukah mean ?
What type of foods do we specificaly eat on Chanukah ?
What activities are forbidden during Chanukah ?
Are woman obligated to light the menorah ?
How many candles do we need for all of Chanukah ?
Which family was Judah the Maccabee from ?
How many branches did the menorah in the temple have ?

The above questions are examples from the multiple choice
Flash quiz. There are two levels of questions, two timer settings.
Both kids and adults will find it enjoyable.

Additional Chanukah resources and games on the J site include:
Free Chanukah Clipart
The Multilingual Hangman Game (English / Hebrew)
The Multilingual Word Search Game (English / Hebrew / Russian)
My Hebrew Songbook (Hebrew Song Lyrics)
My Jewish Coloring Book (online / offline)

The J site has something for everyone, but if that is not
enough, I posted on my website 142 links about Chanukah,
from laws and customs to games and recipes.
Site languages include English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish,
French, Portuguese, German and Italian.

All 142 links have been reviewed / checked this week.
The web address is:
http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdaych.htm

Please forward this message to relatives and friends,
so they may benefit from these holiday resources.

Enjoy!
Jacob

Devil's Island: Si tu veux que je vive, fais-moi rendre mon

The Jerusalem Talmud: A New Edition

By Hana Levi Julian and Hillel Fendel

A new edition of the Jerusalem Talmud has been published with an
index that meets the needs of the most rigorous researcher and allows
the layman to become almost as knowledgeable.

The new one-volume edition of the ancient sacred text includes seven
new indices, including a subject index of some 27,000 entries
covering topics such as labor laws, insurance, prison, abortion,
kidnapping and righteous gentiles. Another index covers some 6,000
Biblical verses.

“In this way, the Jerusalem Talmud has become an open book for sages,
researchers, Rabbis and ordinary laypeople, who are now able to
explore in depth any subject which interests them,” said attorney Zvi
Preisler, co-editor of the new edition together with Rabbi Shmuel Havlin.

The new volume's introduction explains, The Jerusalem Talmud is the
Land-of-Israel version of the six orders of the Mishnah - the
distillation of all that the Land of Israel sages reflected upon and
taught in the approximately 200 years after the codification of the Mishnah.

A team of Talmudic scholars examined the entire Jerusalem Talmud for
seven years, Preisler said, in order to create the comprehensive indexes.

“Even in the age of the internet, in which it is possible to find
every word of the Holy Scriptures through a database search, there is
a great advantage to an index of this kind,” commented the editors.

The Talmud is comprised of the Oral Law, known as the Mishnah, and a
collection of discussions and rabbinic interpretations of the Law,
known as the Gemara. The Mishna and Gemara together complete the
Talmud - of which there are two.

The Jerusalem Talmud, written in both Hebrew and Aramaic, predates by
some 200 years the Babylonian Talmud, which the Sages wrote after the
Jewish exile from the Land of Israel.

As is well-known, the introduction states, the Jerusalem Talmud
was outshadowed over the course of many generations by the Babylonian
Talmud, and was not even available to many of the early Sages - yet
redemption has finally been achieved for the Jerusalem Talmud with
the publication of a modern and precise edition of the entire work.

The new edition of the Jerusalem Talmud is published by Ketuvim
Publishers of Jerusalem, which can be emailed at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

[ha-Safran]: VHS in libraries

2006-12-04 Thread Andrea Rapp
As I wade through the storage room in our facility, I come across a
number of never-cataloged but worthwile educational programs and
documentaries on VHS. For example, today I found 2 kits including
VHS tapes from the PBS program Religion and Ethics NewsWeekly.
What is the policy others follow; do you continue to accession
items on VHS tapes to your collections? Is there a protocol for
transferring them to DVD? What would the copyright issues be?

[ha-Safran]: Photographs of Hebrew authors

2006-12-04 Thread Veronica Belling
Shalom Safranim

This may seem like a shot in the dark, but I have in my collection
what I recall is a Hebrew book published in the 1920s that consists
entirely of photographs of Hebrew/Yiddish authors decoratively framed
in wreaths of leaves. I know that it included a picture of Abraham
Goldfaden and a picture of Judah Leo Landau (South African rabbi and
Hebrew poet/ playwright), both of which I would like to incorporate
in a publication. The problem is that I dont know the title or the
author, and am not having much luck finding the book under subject.
Does this ring any bells for anyone?

I have been told that the Leappad, a children's computer/like educational
toy was designed in Israel and that there is Hebrew software available. That
fact seems to be confirmed on the web, however I cannot locate a source to
buy it or listing of what software is available for this educational toy.
also
Has anyone purchased easy to use Hebrew software for pre-schoolers,
especially for children who cannot yet use a mouse.
The bi-lingual Hebrew videotape is excellent, but does not seem to come in
DVD form.

Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

[ha-Safran]: Prayerbooks

2006-12-04 Thread RITA ALLEN
I am the librarian and archivist of Har Sinai Temple in Trenton, NJ.
We are relocating very soon and we have discovered many old
prayerbooks in our building - prayerbooks that we have no further use
for. I'm looking for suggestions as to where they might be sent and
who might possibly have a use for them. If anyone is interested, I'll
send on the list. Thank you for any help you can give us.

[ha-Safran]: Mayse bukh

2006-12-04 Thread astrid starck
To whom it may concern

I published a two-volume French translation of the Mayse bukh which
has found recognition among scholars. I include the most recent
review. Currently, I am trying to get my work known to a wider public
to which you may have access. Is there anything you can do to help me
reach this objective?
Hoping to here from you in the next future.

Sincerely yours
Astrid Starck

UN BEAU LIVRES D'HISTOIRES: EYN SHOEN MAYSE BUKH. Two volumes.
Facsimile de l'edition princeps de Bale (1602). Traduction du
Yiddish, introduction et notes par Astrid Starck. Basel: Schwage
Verlag, 2004. Pp. cxxxiii + 875. €89.50, ISBN 3-7965-1091-4.

The Mayse Bukh is one of the great classics of early modern Yiddish
literature and Ashkenazi popular religious culture. An anthology of
hagiographic stories about famous Talmudic rabbis and medieval
figures, it is a window into the religious literature that influenced
ordinary Jews in the early modern period. First published in 1602, it
was often reprinted and widely disseminated. There is an earlier
English translation by M. Gaster, but it is based on the Amsterdam
1735 edition that has additions and changes not found in the original
edition. This edition supersedes Gaster as the standard edition of
this important text. It presents a reproduction of the Yiddish text
of the first edition and a French translation with highly informative
annotations on facing pages. The extended introduction of more than
100 pages deals with many aspects of this work, including the
printing history of the text, the evolution of the various editions
and the sources, composition and structure of the Mayse Bukh. The
introduction is the most extensive monograph written on this valuable
text. This edition will be indispensable for students and scholars of
early modern Yiddish literature and Ashkenazi popular religion. It
can be recommended without hesitation for anyone interested in these
subjects and should find a place in every research library.

Subject: [ha-Safran]: Jewish Art Books

Someone had asked for suggestions of Jewish art books, and these
looked interesting:

My Grandparents, My Parents and I: Jewish Art and Culture by Edward
van Voolen (192 pages, 260 illustrations, 200 in color. Hardcover,
ISBN 3-7913-3362-3, $60.00)

This lavishly illustrated book features the great achievements of
Jewish art and offers a fascinating and enlightening examination of
art through the lens of Jewish culture and history.

Saul Steinberg Illuminations by Joel Smith.

This first comprehensive look at the extraordinary contribution Saul
Steinberg made to 20th century art includes previously unseen
sketches, documents, and printed matter from the artist's papers.

Alex Katz Paints Ada by Robert Storr

Focusing in the iconic and ongoing series of portraits of the
artist's wife Ada - originally begun in the 1960s - this beautifully
illustrated book demonstrates the art-historical importance of these
works and the cumulative power of Katz's achievement. (Published in
association with The Jewish Museum)

I am looking for a copy of a PBS documentary. It was produced by
Ruth Westheimer on the Druze communities of Israel and was shown on

with PBS. If anyone can direct me as to where I might be able to
get a copy, I would really appreciate it. I would happily pay for
shipping supplies. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

RE: [ha-Safran]: ADL offers reading list on Israel

2006-12-04 Thread Aviva Astrinsky
Hi Freda,

True to our mission as information officers, I just forwarded a message that
appeared on the JTA newsletter. I do not endorse or evaluate the information,
and therefore there is no use in addressing questions to me. As you
can imagine,
children's books are not a major part of my job description).

I suggest that you and other school librarians at SSC
develop a similar, more up to date, list and share it with ADL.
This is really as it should be!

Best,
Aviva

Hi Aviva,

I went to the ADL web site and was surprised to find that their list
of resources about Israel (not the fiction books for children) was so
out of date -- most titles were from the 90's, nothing published in
this century! I sent them an email asking if they had plans to update
it -- perhaps you'd like to take a look at the site and weigh in also.

Thanks,

Re: [ha-Safran]: VHS in libraries

2006-12-04 Thread Abigail Yasgur
Andrea this is a very good question and one I would like to discuss with
added component of the following observation I have made as it relates to
DVD and VHS.
I am finding that the shelf life of VHS is so much longer than the DVDs. VHS
is generally a ore robust medium, compared to the DVD which is more
sensitive and fragile. I have looked into leeves and condoms that are
supposed to add protection to the DVD, but the inquiries and reading I have
done on this seem to support the fact that, it is truly difficult to mke
sure the DVD is returned in good condition and ready for use by another
patron.
The VHS on the other hand can circulate numerous times throughout the years
and hold up very well.
I am curious if others have made a similar observation, and perhaps others
have come across THE way to ensure DVD shelf life.
Andrea it is ironic that the very show you want to transfer from video to dvd
is one on ethics. This is a copyright question and AJL may want to consult
with a copyright attorney. I will be consulting with a leader in the field
who is the chair of my Library, David Nimmer (Nimmer on Copyright)
