[ha-Safran]: Closing to renovate and grow.

2007-01-24 Thread marcia and morris schertz
The Nancy Mae Shaines Memorial Library of Temple Israel, Portsmouth,
N.H. has closed because the building is being altered. The library
will move from the second floor to the first floor, (yeah) and will
have twice the space (more yeah). If all goes according to plan, we
will start to move in around may or june and re-open in september.

[ha-Safran]: Dragoman Films presents the film: A TREASURE

Announcement of a new film:

Dragoman Films is proud to present A TREASURE IN AUSCHWITS as its
special recommendation for your upcoming Holocaust Memorial Day programming.

This inspiring acclaimed documentary tells to story of a young
student, Yariv Nornberg, who hears from an elderly vendor in a
rundown shop a fantastic story about a Jewish treasure buried in
Polish soil. His curiosity is aroused when he learns of the location
of the hiding place - next to the infamous Auschwitz extermination
camp. During the next 5 years, Yariv pursues these lost religious
artifacts, hidden in the grounds of the Great Synagogue in the city
of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) in 1939. For him, these artifacts embody his
own perished family and guide his attempt for a closure and
acceptance of the Polish people, usually regarded by Jews as
collaborators and anti-Semites.

Yariv manages to organize a unique archaeological excavation to
unearth the treasure. But as the digging progresses, it becomes
apparent that the synagogue's soil conceals a 60-year-old sinister
secret and Yariv and his crew begin to lose hope. Until one morning a
shovel hits a metallic object in one of the ditches*.

The search and excavation for the treasure translates within the film
to a succession of poignant metaphors - to the Jewish existence in
Poland and its annihilation, to the possibility of a dialog between
the younger generations, to the capacity of Nazi evilness embodied in
the presence of the nearby death camp and above all - to the growing
sentiment that only 60 years have gone by and already WW2 and it's
greatest nightmare - the Holocaust - is tragically transforming into
an archaeological exhibit*

Yariv Nornberg, Protagonist of the film, is available in the U.S. and
Canada to present the film and speak about his journey.

[ha-Safran]: Invitation to an author event

2007-01-24 Thread hasafran

Subject: [ha-Safran]: Invitation to an author event

POSTED ON BEHALF OF THE LIBRARIAN AT EAST END TEMPLE. DO NOT REPLY TO SENDER

East End Temple - Congregation El Emet
245 East 17th Street, New York, NY 10003
Sunday, January 28 from 1–4 pm
No admission charge
Open to the public
Annual Helene Spring Library Event featuring the author, Katharine
Weber. She will read from and discuss her novel, Triangle, the
historical mystery based on the tragedy of the infamous 1911 Triangle
Shirtwaist Factory fire. It is a NYC story and a Jewish story, and
the actual building still stands and has landmark status. In Esther
Gottesfeld, the last survivor of the Triangle fire, Weber creates a
believable and memorable witness to the horrors of that day. In 2001,
Esther is living in a NYC Jewish retirement home when a feminist
professor, and Esther's own geneticist granddaughter, Rebecca, and
Rebecca's composer husband, begin to question Esther's memories of
the event. In an interesting twist, the author's own paternal
grandmother worked at the Triangle factory.

Dear Safranim,

I am very pleased to announce that Norman Finkelstein’s new book
American Jewish History: A JPS Guide is now available.

http://www.jewishpub.org/product.php?isbn=0827608101

In this accessible, engaging guide to the history of the Jewish
people in the United States, National Jewish Book Award Winner,
Norman H. Finkelstein tells the dramatic 350-year story, from the
earliest Jewish settlers on America’s shores to the incredible
success of Jews in modern American business, politics, and arts. Each
chapter focuses on a specific period and examines Jewish life at
home, in the community, and in American society at large.

Illustrated with over 70 black and white photographs, maps, charts,
and more than 120 feature boxes and biographies, as well as
timelines, notes, a bibliography, and index, American Jewish History
is a wonderful introduction to understanding the religious,
historical, and cultural heritage of the Jewish people who helped
shape America.

The highly acclaimed JPS Guides series is a collection of concise
reference books, each on a specific topic of key interest within
Jewish studies. Each book in the series offers a practical and
authoritative introduction to the subject, providing a diverse range
of information in a handy and engaging format. The guides are
designed for the general reader and appropriate for those with little
formal Jewish knowledge, as well as those who want quick access to
basic information.

Norman H. Finkelstein is the author of more than a dozen books,
including the JPS titles Heeding the Call: Jewish Voices in
American’s Civil Rights Struggle (a 1997 National Jewish Book Award
Winner) and Forged in Freedom: Shaping the Jewish-American Experience
(a 2002 National Jewish Book Award Winner). He is the series editor
of the JPS Guides.
