[ha-Safran]: Judaica Librarianship - volume 13

2007-03-19 Thread Zachary Baker
The table of contents for volume 13 of Judaica Librarianship (2007)
have just been posted to the AJL website:
http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/publications/jl/jl_vol13_toc.htm.
All of the articles and reviews have been edited, but the issue has
not yet gone into production. (We are aiming for publication in summer 2007.)

This will be a slimmer issue than volume 12 (2006), probably in the
range of 50 pages. The focus of the issue is historical bibliography.

[ha-Safran]: Hotel rooms at convention

2007-03-19 Thread Kathy Steinberg
The special rate listed for the convention is $119, but the Hilton
online reservation site shows a standard room at $89. The only
difference I can see is that it is probably not poolside and does not
include breakfast, which seems anyway to be included in our
convention registration. So - one doesn't need it additionally in the
room rate - Am I correct in these assumptions or am I missing
something as this is my first AJL convention?

[ha-Safran]: The Shofars of the Revolt

2007-03-19 Thread Shmuel Ben-Gad
The Shofars of the Revolt, by Zev Golan, published this month by the
Jabotinsky Institute in Israel, tells of the members of Brit
Habirionim, Betar and the Irgun who set out every Yom Kippur from
1930-1947 to blow the shofar at the Kotel despite the British
prohibitions. The book includes interviews with dozens of the young
men who blew the shofars, young and elderly women who smuggled
shofars and the commanders who coordinated the operations, beginning
with Rabbi Moshe Segal in 1930; it tells the stories of their
actions, arrests, escapes from jail, deportations to Africa and other
Underground operations they were involved in.

The Shofars of the Revolt (in Hebrew; 225 pages, with many
photographs) can be ordered for NIS 88 (includes VAT and shipping)
from the Jabotinsky Institute in Tel Aviv: Tel. 03-6210642, Fax. 03-5285587.

The Jabotinsky Institute will hold a ceremony to mark publication of
the book, Sunday night, March 18, at 6 PM in the Jabotinsky Museum,
King George 38, Tel Aviv (first floor). Speakers (in Hebrew) include
MK Prof. Arye Eldad, author Zev Golan, Jabotinsky Inst. director
Yossi Ahimeir, and veteran Irgunists Sika Aharoni (who was with David
Raziel in Iraq) and Ephraim Even. Entrance is free.

Music Librarian Position # 237

USC Libraries

University of Southern California

URL for job posting:
http://www.usc.edu/libraries/jobs/librarians/documents/237MusicLibn.pdf

POSITION SUMMARY

The University of Southern California (USC) Libraries are seeking an
energetic and innovative Music Librarian. The successful candidate
will join the Arts and Humanities Team and work collaboratively with
other librarians and staff to provide resources and services to the
university. The Music Librarian provides high levels of customer
service; fostering information literacy, preserving intellectual
resources, and building a hybrid collection of electronic and print materials.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Founded in 1879, USC is an international center of learning,
enrolling more than 30,000 FTE undergraduate, graduate, and
professional students on the University Park and the Health Sciences
campuses and offering degrees through its College of Letters, Arts,
and Sciences, Graduate School, and 16 professional schools. It ranks
in the top 10 among private research universities in the United
States in federally funded research and in voluntary support. USC is
one of only four private research universities in the western United
States elected to membership in the Association of American
Universities, a group that represents the top one percent of the
nation's accredited universities and which accounts for nearly
two-thirds of all federally sponsored research.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

The USC libraries house, in Doheny Memorial Library and fourteen
other libraries, collections of more than 3,400,000 volumes, over
5,600,000 microforms, 3,000,000 graphic materials, and nearly 46,000
linear feet of manuscripts and archives. USC’s Libraries subscribe to
over 50,000 serials in print and electronic formats. In addition, the
USC Libraries’ Digital Archive contains more than 193,000 records and
224,000 content files in various formats. Annual reference
transactions number more than 50,000, with approximately 550
instructional presentations being made each year to 10,000 participants.

Three interdisciplinary teams – Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences,
and Science and Engineering – engage in reference, instruction,
collection development and management, and outreach to faculty and
students. They operate within a matrix organization functioning
throughout the university libraries and support five
interdisciplinary centers: Arts and Humanities, based in the Doheny
Memorial Library (DML); Specialized Libraries and Archival
Collections, also based in DML; Social Sciences, based in the Von
Kleinsmid Center Library; Science and Engineering, based in the
Science and Engineering Library; and the Undergraduate Learning
Center, based in the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Library. These five
centers serve as hubs, supported by other library units and
information centers. Information on each of the USC Libraries is
available at:
http://www.usc.edu/libraries/locations

USC is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Center
for Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the Statewide
California Electronic Library Consortium and the Greater Western
Library Alliance. Additional information about the University of
Southern California and its libraries can be obtained at
http://www.usc.edu and
http://www.usc.edu/libraries

MUSIC LIBRARY

The Music Library is part of the Arts and Humanities Center, which
includes DML, the Cinema & Television Library, the Helen Topping
Architecture and Fine Arts Library, and the Hoose Library of
Philosophy. The Music Library holds books and current music serials;
music scores including collected works of individual composers,
critical editions, and historical collections; sound recordings and
videos in a variety of formats; and access to electronic books,
journals, and databases including: RILM, RIPM, RISM, New Groves
Online, Classical Music Library, Classical Scores Library, Sheet
Music Now, Naxos Classical and Jazz, Smithsonian Global Sound,
Database of Recorded American Music, African American Song, and Early
English Books Online. The Music Library also maintains materials in
Special Collections and Archives, and curates manuscript collections
in an off-site storage facility. For more information, see

English Subtitles ...

An adaptation of a popular Israeli stage musical. Kazablan is an army
veteran turned gang leader in the Israeli port of Jaffa who masks his
feelings of bitterness with a lot of bravado. He's sweet on Rachel, a
young woman who lives with her father and stepmother. The budding
relationship scandalizes the neighbors (not to mention Rachel's
parents) and infuriates Yanush, a middle-aged shoe store owner who
wants Rachel for himself. (Yanush feels he's entitled to marry Rachel
since they're both Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern European origins,
whereas Kazablan is a Sephardic Jew from Morocco.) The neighborhood
has something else to worry about besides the antics of Kazablan and
his gang: the city wants to tear down their crumbling homes. The
residents pool their resources to save their houses, but the money
that's collected is stolen. When he's jailed for the theft, Kazablan
must! find a way to clear himself.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Movie - Shnei Kuni Lemel

2007-03-19 Thread Russel Neiss
I have my own personal copy of the film that I am unwilling to part
with, but I believe it can be purchased online at the following
vendors:

http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?userid=&item_id=691390&searchID=
http://www.israel-music.com/shmuel_rudensky/2_kunilemel/dvd/

or directly from SISU Home Entertainment (http://www.sisuent.com/) catalog #957

Hope this helps,

Russel M. Neiss

Making a reservation [Re: Convention beds]

2007-03-19 Thread Elliot H. Gertel
Just as an FYI, I just tried to book a room for June 16-21 online and
even though the AJL rate (BTW, it shows Association fo Jewish
Librarians--two errors--on the Hilton webpage) was clearly shown, and
I followed the directions, much higher rates kept coming up, not the
special Convention rate! I finally called Hilton Reservations, and
after an inordinately long wait (mostly on hold), I was told that
Saturday night was "sold out!" I could only get the AJL rate for
Sunday through Wednesday! This seems odd given that this information
just recently went online...To be safe, I had to book at a much
higher rate ($189 plus the $17 extra fees + 11.92% tax) for that
first night. Why is the place already "sold out" when the web page
shows that the rate is available 6/15-6/21? Has anyone else
encountered this or a similar problem? Is there any way to rectify this?

Thanks!

Elliot H. Gertel
