[ha-Safran]: Pilichowski painting at Hebrew University
Hi Amalia, There is an image of the painting online on the website of the Israel Ministry for Foreign Affairs, on the page about higher education. /MFA/Facts+About+Israel/Education/EDUCATION-+Higher+Education.htm The URL for the image itself is http://www.mfa.gov.il/NR/rdonlyres/832BE5F2-4AFE-43FB-ADA2-8090C9A61DBE/0/MFAJ0byl0.jpg If for some reason the URL doesn't work, go to Google Images, type in Pilichowski university, and then search. (Note that the name is Pilichowski, w/ an i after the L.) The painting will be the first item that comes up. Unfortunately, the quality of the online image is not great. It's an enormous painting and a small image. The original is phenomenal in its detail. You can recognize each of the dignitaries present on the dais. In the audience are representatives of every sort of person who lived in Palestine at the time, including Bedouin in traditional headdress, Hadassah nurses in uniform, etc. Hope this is helpful! Have you heard about all the changes about to happen at Akiba? - new name, new location, new head of school! [ha-Safran]: Walking Tour of Valencia (Spain) June 2007
Rabbis Mark Hurvitz and Debby Prinz visited Valencia in June. Many of you have asked what I would show you if you were ever to come with me on a walking tour of Valencia. Well, then. This is it. The commentary is neither bigger nor smaller nor grander than things here really are. Mark captured La Javura and Valencia perfectly. The only complaint I have is that the 2 photos in which I figure, show ever single one of the 15 pounds I have gained over this last year. Very irritating but a grand incentive to loose them forthwith. I thank Mark and Debby from the bottom of my heart for their kind comments and for being excellant tourists. I hope you look up the page, that you enjoy it and that you come to Valencia as soon as possible so I give you the penny-tour: http://www.davka.org/where/travel/iberia+2007/spain/valencia.html Besos de Valencia Alba Toscano Sinagoga conservador/masorti La Javura http://www.uscj.org/world/valencia Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
[ha-Safran]: Catalogs of Hebrew manuscripts on pdf
Two catalogues recently published in Russia are available at http://www.libfl.ru/restitution/catalogs/ They describe, rather awkwardly and not without serious errors, manuscripts from 2 pre-War Jewish libraries looted by the Nazis and plundered from the Nazis by the Red Army. The mss are now in the Russian State Military Archives and in the Russian State Library in Moscow. 1.Catalogue of Manuscripts and Archival materials of Juedisches Theologisches Seminar, Breslau 2. [ha-Safran]: Book about King Solomon
In 2005 I published a book titled The Book of King Solomon. It dramatizes the story of King Solomon, based on both the Biblical account and later legends. Included are tales of his legal decisions (e.g., his ruling in the wrongful death suit brought by Goliath, Jr.), as well as commentary that relates to Jewish history, religion, and folklore. The book seeks to make King Solomon--the wisest of men--relevant to modern-day readers. I am now offering the book as a free PDF download. To download it (or for a description of its contents), go to: http://www.professorsolomon.com/kingsolomonpage.html Michael Solomon Baltimore www.professorsolomon.com Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
[ha-Safran]: Chicken Man coming back into print
Some of you may recall that in 2005 and 2006 when I chaired the AJL Out-of-Print Books Task Force, one of the books we tried to get publishers to bring back in print was Michelle Edwards' Chicken Man, a picture book originally published in 1991 by Lothrop, Lee Shepard Books, and reprinted in 1994 as a paperback by Mulberry Books. I'm happy to announce that NewSouth Books, a small publisher in Alabama, will be bringing Chicken Man back into hardcover print in January, 2008. Enjoy! Re: [ha-Safran]: Chicken Man coming back into print
Hurrah! I have managed to hang on to two old copies but just barely. I am thrilled that this popular title (with the kids) will be back in circulation. I will buy more.
