[ha-Safran]: PR Issues, Closing Libraries

2007-08-24 Thread Deborah Stern
I'm coming late to this discussion and have not read all of the
previous posts, so please excuse me if I'm repeating ideas already
presented or am speaking out of turn. But my general opinion is that
AJL should engage a professional to help us rethink our purpose,
organization, and activities - to create a new strategic plan for our
association. It may be that we are not putting our best efforts where
they are truly needed in this day and age, that we may need to engage
a professional to help us project our image and to lobby for
libraries. We all have great talent and many ideas, but are we using
them to the best advantage of our profession? Many non-profit
organizations engage in such strategic rethinking and I think it's
time for us to do so as well, to ensure the future of Judaica librarianship.

[HaSafran]: Timely book-Letter on the Wind

2007-08-24 Thread tuchmans
Dear Friends,
I'd like to call your attention to a new book by Sarah M Lamstein, a
member of my congregation, that is being published by Boyd Mills
Press on September 1.

Its title is Letter on the Wind,a Chanukah Tale, but don't wait
for Chanukah to order it or use it. It is very appropriate for the
High Holidays with its themes of faith and the evils of lashon hora.
It is a children's picture book illustrated by Neil Waldman but it
can be used with many ages. I'd keep it on the shelf all year long
and not pigeon-hole it with the holiday books.

[ha-Safran]: Best Hebrew/English Dictionary?

2007-08-24 Thread Laurie Haas
One of my teacher's wishes to make a gift of a Hebrew/English
dictionary to her synagogue library and she wants it to be the
best. I suggested the Alcalay set, but wanted to ask my esteemed
colleagues for their opinion. Any other suggestions?

[ha-Safran]: Humash volumes to give away

2007-08-24 Thread Marga Hirsch
I am looking to give away multiple copies of 3 volumes of a humash w/
commentary - all Hebrew.

The series is called Hamishah humshei torah, ha-m'fo'ar m'irat
einayim, published in Jerusalem in 1991. It includes the Torah text,
targum onkelos, perush rashi, ba'al ha-turim, ikar shiftei hahamim,
and toldot aharon; also the haftarot with peirush, and the megillot.

I have 15 copies of Vayikra (includes Shir ha-shirim), 17 copies of
Bemidbar (includes Ruth), and 17 copies of Devarim (includes Eicha
and Kohelet). Almost all the copies are in new condition; a few have some wear.

They're yours for the cost of postage. Any copies that no one wants
are going into the genizah for eventual burial.

Shabbat shalom!

Marga

On Sunday I will update the Membership directory for 2007/2008 and it
will include only members that renewed their membership for 2007/2008.

Have a good weekend and Shabbat Shalom,
