This five-part novel dealing with the horrors of the Holocaust and the influence of this harrowing chapter of human historywas highly praised for its courage in employing original and unconventional devices and literary tools. This is the story of a nameless five-year-old child, as it is told to her granddaughter years later. The child's parents entrust her to a family of farmers living in a remote Polish village. She is hidden in a dark potato cellar, with little food and only a rat for company - and raped repeatedly by the farmers' son. When the girl's parents no longer send money, the farmer's wife takes her to the village priest, urging him to kill her. But Father Stanislaw hides the Jewish girl in his church and risks his life in healing her wounded body and broken soul. Sixty years later, already a grandmother in Tel Aviv, she tries to recount her horrific childhood to her grand-daughter who prepares a school essay. Memory, buried in the darkness for so long, demands its right to emerge. The five genres of the book: story, legend, poetry, futuristic fantasy and a diary, are entwined to create the libretto. Lima Energely, an anthropologist in the year 2099 is bent on uncovering the origins of the widespread myth Girl Rat and she is the main figure in the opera who reveals on stage the circle of Remembearers, those who have the traumatic event registered in their consciousness. Futuristic Lima tries to force the memory on her partner Stash, who bears the same name of the rat who was once the only comfort of the hidden girl. The highlight of the opera is a Mass scene, when Father Stanislaw rebels against his Lord who abandoned his children. In an attempt to restore the girl's hope and her faith, the priest discovers he has lost his own. Conducted by Ori Leshman. Director: Oded Kotler. The opera is sung with English surtitles. Opening night April 9, 2005 to rave reviews. It is still running on the Israeli stage as part of the repertoire of the Cameri Theatre of Tel Aviv. On May 8th 2006 it was performed at the Dramatic Theatre of Warsaw. On February 2008 it will be performed in the Music-Theatre Festival in South Africa. Next performance in Israel- Cameri Theatre of Tel Aviv, Stage Two, at 20:30: September 19 th 2007 November 14th 2007 December 4th 2007 Tickets are available at the Box Office of the Cameri Theatre +972-3-6060900 +972-3-6060960 http://www.cameri.co.il/eng/contact.asp Shanah Tovah to all, Gail Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: Hasafran @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

[ha-Safran]: Planning a new library
Hello AJL members and friends, Theres a strong possibility that well be undergoing major renovations at our synagogue in the near future. Ive been asked to give input about my vision for a new library. Since I dont want to reinvent the wheel, I hope a few people out there will be able to help. If youve been involved in planning a synagogue library, please share your expertise and experience. What should I insist upon? What would be optional? What are the factors I should consider and what are the problems to avoid? Our synagogue library serves both children and adults, and I work closely with classes in the supplementary religious school. We have a collection of approximately 10,000 books. I appreciate any help you can provide. [ha-Safran]: The Shmitta Controversy: Digitized Historical Documents
Since the renewal of Jewish farming in Eretz Israel in the late 19th century, the question of observing the sabbatical shmitta year has been a recurring and unresolved halachic topic. Rabbinic opinions have been, and still are, divided between those who recommend formally selling Jewish owned agricultural lands for a year to non-Jews (heter ha-mechira) and those who require not working the fields, marketing of alternate non-Jewish produce, and financially supporting the farmers affected. The Jewish National and University Library Collection includes many broadsides and other original documents relating to this controversy. In commemoration of the shmitta year 5768 beginning now, the Library's David and Fela Shapell Family Digitization Project is pleased to make a selection of these digitized documents available for viewing at: http://jnul.huji.ac.il/heb/shmitta/ The site is in Hebrew. ketivah va-hatimah tovah. [ha-Safran]: New from JPS: Sephardic folktales for all ages
Stories from the past for todays Jewish families The Power of Song And Other Sephardic Tales Selected and Retold by Rita Roth Designed and illustrated by Alexa Ginsburg Folktales are told not just to entertain but to transmit values. This delightful collection of Jewish tales from the Mediterranean contains stories the whole family can share together! Meet Hanina, the daughter of a Jewish tailor who cures a sultans only child by taming a lioness to get her milk. Or Nahum Bilbas, the brave rabbi-in-training who dares to confront the great warrior El Cid in order to secure peace for the Jews of Valencia. These and countless other colorful characters will entertain and intrigue you in this collection that contains lessons, truths, surprises, and happy endings. When the Jews fled the Iberian Peninsula in 1492 and scattered all over Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, they took with them the folktales that were an integral part of their unique heritage. As they settled into their new homelands, they borrowed many of the literary devices and motifs from their adopted countries, adding unique flavor to the traditional Jewish story. Each story in The Power of Song is accompanied by commentary on its origin and meaning, as well as definitions of the foreign words that appear in the tale. The authors introduction gives special insight into the history of Jewish folktales and specifically those of the Sephardic Jews. Rita Roth received her masters degree in teaching from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri and her doctorate in education from Washington University. She was an associate professor in the Education Department at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri for twenty years. Alexa Ginsburg holds a BFA from Cooper Union College. She is a graphic artist, a designer of homemade textiles, and the owner of a computer services company. She is also the illustrator of Wise and Not So Wise: Ten Tales from the Rabbis (JPS 2004). Re: [ha-Safran]: Planning a new library
There are lots of things to consider, but some frequently over looked items are: make to have a work room with running water. There are many times that you need to wash you hands or something else and you don't want to run to the washroom. Plan for plenty of electrical and computer connections and then plan for ample expansion. Twenty years ago no one thought we would have banks of computers for library users. Think about the flow of people and information in your new library. Plan for security of materials, people, and data. Think of what message you want the space to give the visitor or staff member. Have child sized furniture in part of the library. Have hard chairs and soft chairs.
