[ha-Safran] :Temple fire

2007-12-20 Thread Helene or Murray Tuchman
Yes, Temple Ahavat Achim of Gloucester Massachusetts had a terrible fire and
burned to the ground. The apartment building next door caught fire and it
spread to the Temple. Unfortunately, a disabled resident of the apartment
building could not be rescued and died. The congregation of 250 families
held Shabbat services at a nearby church. Many of you may know of the
Rabbi Emeritus of that synagogue,Myron Geller, the author of several Jewish
children's books.

Below is the website of the Temple with a statement from the Rabbi of their
needs.

RED SEA: REAL-LIFE FICTION: INSIDE THE MIND OF AN ISRAELI COUNTER-
TERROR COMMANDO AS HE TRACKS DOWN A TERRORIST MASTER

Strongly recommended starred review Library Journal

Emily Benedek is the new female voice of suspense novels of the
highest order Filled with complex plot twists, memorable characters
and a chilling terrorist attack even deadlier than 9/11. Benedek
obviously knows her stuff, and it shows on every page. -- Nelson De Mille

not only a heart-stopping read, it informs as much as it entertains.
Naomi Ragen

RED SEA is a work of fiction except that it s all too real. It brings
you into the life of an Israeli counter-terror officer, how he
thinks, what he fears, what he ll do to catch his prey. Offering a
deeper understanding of the religious and cultural underpinnings of
Islamic terrorism and what s required to thwart it, RED SEA reveals
startling new details of the 9/11 attacks. Throughout this riveting
novel the author provides an eye-opening examination of the gaping
holes in our nation s security.
Three commercial aircraft explode at cruising altitude, each
thirty-thousand feet above open-ocean, ensuring that the most
significant clues to this apparent act of international terrorism are
lost. When a fourth plane bound for London seemingly breaks the
pattern, crashing into a forest outside of Munich, the grisly debris
offers intelligence and aviation security experts their first solid
clues. From its gripping opening to its tense final pages off the
coast of New York City, Emily Benedek s new novel RED SEA (St. Martin
s Press), offers readers a rare and fascinating peek inside
counter-terror investigations, the fanatical terrorists they re after
and our alarming vulnerability.
A journalist whose articles and essays have appeared in Newsweek,
Rolling Stone, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Business
Week, and NPR, among others, Benedek is also the author of three
highly-regarded nonfiction books. Drawing on her research in
counter-terrorism and aviation security as well as extensive
interviews with former and current officers and soldiers of the
Israel Defense Forces, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and special agents
of the FBI Benedek has crafted a thrilling work of suspense that
plays out a real-life scenario that terrifies American security
officials: an attack on a U.S. seaport. The novel s hero, Julian
Granot, a retired Israeli commando and security expert called in by
the State of Israel to investigate the airplane crashes, is based on
one of the author s own highly placed, real-life sources.
Marie Peterssen, an American journalist, agrees to become Julian s
hidden asset, sharing details of her own reporting in exchange for
access to high-level intelligence. When Marie gains the confidence
of American FBI agent Morgan Ensley, the three slowly realize that
the crashes were intended as a diversion to throw investigators off
track and that a bigger attack is in the offing. Creative
investigations and special intelligence-gathering techniques, a
hallmark of the Israel Defense Forces counter-terror successes, lead
the three to Mansour Obaidi, a Muslim international shipping magnate
with Messianic ambitions. As a container ship packed with a rogue
tactical nuclear weapon makes its way to New York City, the three
must work together to disrupt Obaidi s brilliant plan.

2007-12-20 Thread Liza Stabler
Dear Safraniyot and Safranim,

On December 5 Douglas Century spoke here at Temple Emanu-El, New York
about Barney Ross, published by Nextbook/Schoken. If you are
looking for an excellent speaker who can fully engage his audience
with a dynamic presentation, Doug Century is for you. He has a deep,
nuanced and empathic understanding of the social issues pertaining to
Ross' life. Although Century's work is clearly meant for adults,
we're thinking of creating a program for teenagers around the book
and perhaps asking Century to speak with the kids after they've read
and discussed the book. The biography's themes of immigration,
Jewish identity, sports, World War II, heroism, and drug addiction
make this a natural.

[ha-Safran]: Why a Labor Movement Matters in RIGHTEOUS

The book RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION: A JEWISH CALL FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE
has just come out. And it's in the bookstores. {Or at least at the
one I went to earlier today.} [NOTE: In it appears what amounts to a
chapter in the book, called Why a Labor Movement Matters. I
authored the chapter.]
The three editors of the book are working on an ambitious and
important project, of which the book is just one - even if important
part. See some discussion of this here http://jspot.org/?p=1777 as
well as here http://www.righteousindignation.info/ even if the latter
site sez it's `under construction':
You can purchase RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION online at the Portland,
Oregon-based Powells bookshop, which was unionized several years
ago. Go to the website just after this sentence, and you will not
only get a good price, but benefit the Labourstart project {

time! http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/partner?partner_id=23921

[ha-Safran]: Dewey vs. Weine?

2007-12-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
How does the updated Dewey Classification System compare with
Weine? I am working on cataloging a Judaic library and as far as I
can tell, my best options are Dewey and Weine. What are the
advantages/disadvantages of each one? The majority of the material
is Judaic and there are many types of materials (audio-visual,
periodicals, books, toys, etc). The end result needs to be highly
organized but also user friendly.
Thanks very much and I will summarize for the list.
Sorry if this is a repost but I didn't see my other post on the listserv.

[ha-Safran]: Query from Canadian Picture Book Writer

2007-12-20 Thread Lesley Simpson
Hello All,

By way of introduction I am the author of two Jewish picture books,
The Shabbat Box and The Purim Surprise. In my grown-up life I teach
journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. I am writing
with two queries, and I am hoping someone here can assist me. If
you're allergic to typing e-mails, I welcome calls at my home in
Toronto, 416 229 0320. I promise to call you back!

My first question is this: is there such a thing as a modern Chelm
story that is more urban? I wanted to write a new kids book, set in
the city, but wanted to read first what might already exist to avoid
overlap and become more fluent about this genre. Any suggestions most welcome.

My second question is about a concept for an adult book related to
the dreidel. Does anyone know of a miscellany that explores the
history, origins, controversies, midrashim and jokes about dreidels?
This book would be more of a journalistic exploration but written
with much humour and an appreciation for the zany.

Lesley Simpson

[ha-Safran]: Grace Paley's Glad Day to reissue novel

2007-12-20 Thread Lauren Snyder
for immediate release

Contact: Lauren Snyder, Publicist / [EMAIL PROTECTED] /
952-201-2691

Grace Paley's Glad Day Books to re-issue
Edges: O Israel O Palestine by Leora Skolkin-Smith

Thetford, VT, October 29, 2007 — After selling out of two successive
print runs, Leora Skolkin-Smith's intoxicating novel about a young
girl's personal and political discovery in 1960's Israel and
Palestine is being re-released in a new edition by Glad Day Books.
This new incarnation will include the author's Afterword and
dedication to her late mentor, Publisher and Editor of Glad Day
Books, Grace Paley.

Since its original publication date in May 2005, Edges has garnered
critical acclaim and awards including a stipend from the PEN/Faulkner
Foundation's National Schools Program, a spot on Bloomsbury Review's
Favorite Books of the Last 25 Years list, and selection by both the
National Women's Studies Association Conference and the Jewish Book
Council. The book has also been optioned for a feature film to be
shot on location in Jerusalem and will be available in an audio
edition, narrated by stage and screen actress Tovah Feldshuh, in
November. Skolkin-Smith says of the book's success: There was some
way in which gossiping about relatives suddenly became a world of
characters and expressing grief about a war in the land where my
grandmother and mother were born was dignified into a theme, showing
others a forgotten Jerusalem. For me it was not only amazing to have
found this story a place to nest and grow under the warm wings of an
older and wiser mentor like Grace Paley, but that, despite
everything, the novel found a life of its own.

Selected Praise for Edges

Well-written, powerful in both imagery and subject matter.
—Jewish Book World

An intimate and compelling portrait of ordinary people caught in an
extraordinary time and place.
—Robert Gray, Fresh Eyes Now

Edges is an elegantly written, moving novel that has a lot to say
about love, identity, history and the meaning of nationality. The
book is worth reading alone for its superb language, but it is
gripping and unforgettable as well in its story telling and evocation
of place and emotions.
—Oscar Hijuelos
About the Author
Leora Skolkin-Smith holds a BA and an MFA in Writing from Sarah
Lawrence College where she was awarded a Teaching Fellowship for
graduate work. A Pushcart Prize nominee and the recipient of a number

previously in Persea: An International Review and The Sarah Lawrence
Review. Edges is her first published novel. For more information,

About Glad Day Books
Glad Day Books founders Grace Paley and Robert Nichols state at the
back of Edges: Our particular purpose is to bridge the gap between
imaginative literature and political articles and criticism which
have been fixed under the labels of 'Fiction' and 'Nonfiction.' But
the split has diminished literature and its usefulness to society.
With these constraints writers find themselves engaged in
self-censorship that has to do both with artistic and formal
considerations and with what can be said. The hope of a literature
that is positively useful has inspired us to call our publishing
imprint GLAD DAY.
