Please note that if your high school library is one of the Bookshelf

[ha-Safran]: Manhattan Jewish Book Sale

2008-03-04 Thread Dan Wyman
Friends--

It's time for another Manhattan Jewish Antiquarian Book Sale,

this coming Sunday, March 9, from 10-4

But this Sale is special, even more special than usual, for two reasons:

First it is especially special (!) because we will be at our new location,
the galleries of

Kestenbaum Co
12 WEST 27TH STREET
(BETWEEN BROADWAY SIXTH AVENUES)
13TH FLOOR
NEW YORK CITY

(We are no longer at the Workmans Circle building on E. 34th St)

And second, it is especially special because we will have a

Judaica Antiques Roadshow event, with Judaica Auctioneer Daniel E.
Kestenbaum providing free appraisals of your Judaic art and book treasures.

As always, a number of the Northeast's top dealers in Judaica will have
available hundreds of unusual, rare, and important Jewish books for sale.

So bring your treasures and your checkbook and come help us celebrate!

See you there!

A Farkerte velt: Birobidzhan fun der noent: anyndrukn fun a nesiye
in der Yidisher Oytonomer Gegnt, zumer 2007

Yiddish of Greater Washington presents a lecture on Sunday, March 16,
2008 at 11:00 a.m. by Dr. Sheva Zucker, renowned Yiddish scholar,
Executive Director of the League for Yiddish and editor of the
journal Afn Shvel. Dr. Zucker will speak on Birobdizhan, the Jewish
Autonomous Region in Asiatic Russia. Dr. Zucker spent summer 2007 at
the first Birobdizhan Yiddish summer program. Come hear the
fascinating history, and a present-day report, on life in the
alternative Jewish homeland set aside by Stalin, where Yiddish is a
recognized official language and thousands of Jewish settlers found
homes in the 1930's and 1940's.

The lecture will be given entirely in Yiddish at the JCC of Greater
Washington, 6125 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852.

RE: [ha-Safran]: A very old book

2008-03-04 Thread Rettberg, Dan
Hello, Sylvia--

I suggest you contact a dealer who is a member of the Antiquarian
Booksellers' Association of America. They have a high reputation and
hold their members to a strict code of ethics. You can see their
website at http://www.abaa.org/books/abaa/index.html?showsub=1 You
can search their database of members from the website asking it to
break down the list for you according to geographical region and
specialization.

In the case of your piece, I think it would make a lot of difference
as to whether it was published in Germany or in America. Also, the
general subject area would make a difference. German Americana
(especially from the 18th century) is a big collecting interest for
some. It also helps if you can combine two or more collecting
interests in the piece, i.e. not just German Americana but local
history and or elementary textbooks for example. Beyond that
condition is important, and of course, provenance, or ownership history.

Have fun with this!

RE: [ha-Safran]: A very old book

2008-03-04 Thread jd
The best source I have found for this is to try local antique shops or (even
better) a used book dealer - you may need to hunt around to find one that is
competent to evaluate old books (instead of recycling paperbacks). I
know Powell books in Chicago is pretty good, but I don't think they do
anything but book-in-hand evaluations
