2008-11-11 Thread Marga Hirsch
It sounds like you have prints of the illustrations for the JPS
volume of the Five Megillot and Jonah. Try googling Ismar David.
You'll find a good deal about him.

This sounds like the drawings made by Ismar David for the JPS The

Re: [ha-Safran]: Looking for Jewish Story about an Shammas

2008-11-11 Thread Lee Jaffe
This is the second case in as many days that someone has mentioned
Christian and Jewish tellings of the same story. I can add a third.

There is a Jorge Luis Borges tale (I don't have the title at hand)
about a man who has a recurring dream showing him the location of a
buried treasure in another city. His wife finally prevails on him to
go find the treasure. When he gets to the site he is arrested for
trespassing. When he tells his story, the policeman tells him, I
have a similar dream... and proceeds to describe the first man's own
home. When he's released, the man returns home and digs up the
treasure in his own backyard.

Nice story, no? A few years ago I came across the same story in a
collection of Hasidic tales, I can't remember which.

I suspect that there is a certain freedom with intellectual
property between cultures esp. if there isn't a lot of material in
translation. I've no reason to assert that it takes place more in one
direction than the other. But we know that Yiddish playwrights
regularly adapted English plays into Yiddish. (One reviewer seeing
a Yiddish version of Death of a Salesman wrote that he'd just seen
the original.) I can see Yiddish tales being mined by other writers
for ideas. The Russian-Jewish-Argentine writer Alberto Gerchunoff
was supposed to be very influential on Luis Borges, so it isn't
impossible that there was some cultural cross-over.

I was looking for a quote I remember as attributed to Picasso along
the lines of originally is directly proportional to the obscurity of
your sources. Stealing from Yiddish writers would, at one time,
have been a safe bet. Like Shakespeare stealing his plots from
Italian writers before they were translated into English.

-- Lee Jaffe, UC Santa Cruz

p.s. I heard another variation on the Shammas story where two public
figures told the same story. Bill Clinton claimed that while he was
president, he and Hilary were stopped at gas-station and while they
were waiting Hilary went into the shop. She was there a long time
and when she returned she told Bill that the owner was her old high
school sweetheart and they talked about old times. Bill remarked
that had she not broken up with her old boyfriend, she might have
ended up the wife of a gas station owner instead of first lady. To
this, Hilary responded, No, if I'd stayed with him, he'd be
president and you'd own a gas station. It turns out that the story
-- doubtful on many levels -- really belongs to Dan Rather, who
claims this actually took place to him and his wife and he'd told the
story to Bill.

[ha-Safran]: The new volume of Yerusholaymer Almanach

2008-11-11 Thread Kerler, Dov-Ber Boris
Dear Hasafran,

It is a pleasure to announce that the vol. 28 of Yerusholaymer
Almanakh appeared in July 2008 in Jerusalem. It includes new
original Yiddish fiction, poetry, essays, memoirs and papers by 35
authors from Israel, Europe and America. The volume opens with a
tribute publication of the works of a number of leading Yiddish
authors from the recent past and it also offers new Yiddish
translations of prose and poetry from English, Hebrew and Russian.

Its substantial new section of new Yiddish writing includes, among
others, the complete text of a musical play, The Maiden of Ludmir
by Miriam Hoffman (New York), the poems of recently discovered new
Yiddish voices: Haike Beruriah Wiegand of London, and Sergey
(Yisroel) Nekrasov of St. Petersburg; a new, longer poem by Velvl
Chernin and a grotesque novella by Boris Kotlerman (both from Israel)
as well as stories by Heershadovid Menkes of Vilna, and the veteran
author of Ukraine, Yoysef Burg of Czernowitz.

Among its essays, studies, and publications are included a memoir of
Yiddish schools in prewar Vilna, a new Yiddish translation of a short
symbolistic play by Shloime Mikhoels (the surviving text from 1919 is
in Russian), as well as studies on the Israeli Yidishpiel theater, on
Franz Kafka, and the Yiddish theater in Prague, on Sigmund Freud and
the infamous Phillip Halsmann Case in prewar Austria, on the fate of
Yiddish studies and culture in prewar Soviet occupied Lithuania, and
a linguistic study of the lexico-semantic impact of Yiddish on the
formation of Israeli Hebrew (Ivrit). All in all the Almanakh
contains new works by 34 contemporary authors, essayists, and
scholars from Israel, Europe, Russia, the USA, Australia, and Argentina.

The address of the Almanakh's website is:
http://yiddish-almanach.org/. Its Table of Content (including a
generous samples of published works) can be viewed at:

[ha-Safran]: SEFARAD - a worthy addition to your library collection

2008-11-11 Thread Ruth Diskin
Dear Librarian,
A Documentary Series in 10 Parts
Director Jack Matitiahu
Producer Margalit Matitiahu
A wonderful new release that is a superb addition to any library collection
Since the beginning of the Middle Ages, Spain was a large and fertile
center for the Jewish community. This unique series addresses the
identity of the Spanish Jewish community in the past and in the
present. Shot on location in Spain, Israel and additional European
and North African countries, the series focuses on the history of the
Jewish community before the expulsion from Spain and its aftermath.
We follow history thru the Golden Age, the Inquisition and into the
birth of the State of Israel.
Sefarad is an excellent series for students of Spanish as well as
Jewish history. The concept behind the series is to bring to the
viewer an intricate story in a more in-depth way than has previously
been done. We chose to focus on a particular city or district in
order to present a layered and emotional story that is relevant to
both the past and the present. Additionally, a meeting with a wider
panorama is not only historical, but it also touches upon
contemporary cultural life through interviews with poets, artists and
musicians.
Two episodes are currently available: Toledo and Leon. Each episode
is a beautiful journey into a rich and fascinating past.
The first chapter in the series is devoted to the northern Spanish
town of Leon, a town with a rich, but little-known, Jewish history.
The movie deals with the fine line dividing the apparent and the
obscure in relations between Jewish and Spanish cultures. This
episode takes on additional significance as we ourselves are the
descendants of Spanish-Jewish exiles from the city of Leon.
The city of Toledo was famous for its rich cultural and historical
heritage; a city, in which three major cultures met, intertwined and
enriched each other. In this episode entitled Toledo -The Hidden
Secret, we experience a meeting of the past and the present,
reflecting the history, culture and other aspects of former Jewish
community life within the city's walls. It is the story of the city,
from the 4th century, covering the Moslem and the Christian periods
and up to the time after the Inquisition.
We are pleased to offer you the first two chapters at a special price
of $115 per episodes for school and public libraries – and $300 for
university libraries. The prices do not include shipping and

[ha-Safran]: HASAFRAN digest 3842

2008-11-11 Thread Marion Stein
Joan and I would like instructions on the most efficient way to read
the Hasafran. The goal in receiving it in this format is to allow
the reader to ONLY read the ones he/she is particularly interested in
and NOT all the rest. Having to scroll through all the items rather
than being able to click on the relevant ones is not so helpful.
How is this digest meant to be used? We'd like some expert
advice. Thanks, Marion Stein

Did you get responses to your question about using the Hasafran

Dear colleagues:

I wrote to you a couple of weeks ago updating you on our progress concerning
the 44th annual convention of AJL to be held in Chicago, July 5-8, 2009,
Sheraton Chicago, North Water Street http://www.sheratonchicago.com/

We already have a great program (almost) in place and are working on all the
other aspects of the convention: exhibits, visits, etc.

If you were thinking of submitting a proposal but have postponed doing it,
now is the time. The deadline is Dec. 1st a few days after the Thanksgiving
vacation.

To enhance the program we need AJL members to volunteer to be program
moderators and session chairs. Thank you to all the members who have so
graciously volunteered. If you haven't, please let us know how you would
like to participate. We would be very grateful for your input.

Best,

[ha-Safran]: Gale response to AJL criticism of Article on

2008-11-11 Thread Susan Dubin
Zionism in Gale's Encyclopedia of Race and Racism

Dear Safranim,

There has been much discussion on this listserv about the article on
Zionism published by Gale in their Encyclopedia of Race and Racism. I
have been in contact with the publisher and expressed AJL's concerns
about the article. Gale is aware of the controversial nature of this
article and has responded to the criticism of it in the letter copied
below. After discussion with several of the AJL members in the RAS
division, we agree that Gale's response shows a willingness to
recognize the problem and take steps to correct it. Gale is the
publisher of several well-respected reference works of interest to
Judaic librarians including Encyclopedia Judaica.

Here is the letter:

November 10, 2008

A Message from Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, regarding the
Encyclopedia of Race and Racism.

In November 2007, Gale, under its Macmillan Reference USA imprint,
published the Encyclopedia of Race and Racism. Edited and written by
scholars from a variety of fields, this work examines the
anthropological, sociological, historical, economic, cultural, and
scientific aspects of race and racism in the modern era.

The encyclopedia contains over 400 signed, peer-reviewed articles. A
complete list of articles, contributors and their affiliations, and
editorial board members is available from a special link at www.gale.com.

One article in the encyclopedia, Zionism, has sparked controversy
among some readers who have challenged the accuracy of the article
and questioned whether this topic is appropriate for inclusion in an
encyclopedia on race and racism.

Gale's role as publisher of the Encyclopedia is not to present a
particular viewpoint on any topic, but to provide well founded
information that presents a broad scope of knowledge and views on a
subject. Further, while we cannot and do not shy away from
controversial views, we are committed to providing comprehensive,
respectful coverage. Based on the constructive feedback we have
received, we have concluded that we should offer a broader range of
views on the subject of Zionism.

With an apology to those who believe that we failed, in this case, to
live up to our high standards to publish a fair and balanced account,
we are taking the following steps. First, we suggest that readers
visit the websites of organizations such as the Zionist Organization
of America (www.zoa.org) and the American Jewish Committee
(www.ajc.org) who have contacted Gale to communicate their objections
and express their viewpoints.

In addition, we have begun to commission a series of articles for the
online edition of the encyclopedia that will address these objections
in several ways. We will commission several articles on Zionism that
engage perspectives other than those given in the current article.
Gale will work with well respected scholars to plan these additional
articles and to identify authoritative authors. In addition, in
recognition that national movements do not equate to racism, we will
commission articles that address other forms of nationalism in order
to present this topic in a broader context.

Gale's objective is to provide publications that support critical
thinking and informed debate. Gale's editorial integrity in
presenting a broad array of viewpoints in a balanced manner is well
known and acknowledged in the library and academic communities.
Accordingly, where our readers and customers identify ways to improve
our publications to deliver on this goal, we gratefully consider them.

We will update this message with further information as authors for
additional Zionism articles are chosen and other topics are added.

B'shalom,
Susan Dubin
AJL President
