[ha-Safran]: New Book about The Nordic Countries, Israel and the Jews

2008-12-11 Thread David Elazar
Behind the Humanitarian Mask: The Nordic Countries, Israel and
the- Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld, Editor -
Foreword by Gert Weisskirchen
(Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs & Friends of Simon Wiesenthal
Center for Holocaust Studies, 2008)

http://jcpa.org/JCPA/Templates/showpage.asp?DBID=1&LNGID=1&TMID=103&FID=448&PID=0&IID=2588

In the past decades many pioneering efforts to demonize Israel have
come from elites of the Nordic countries. The motifs of this
anti-Israelism are similar to those of classic anti-Semitism of which
it is a new mutation. Such highly discriminatory prejudices are in
particular expressed in Norway and Sweden by leading socialist and
extreme-leftist politicians as well as journalists, clergy, and
so-called humanitarians.

Behind the Nordic countries' appearance and oft-proclaimed concern
for human rights lurk darker attitudes. This book deals mainly with
lifting the humanitarian mask as far as Israel and Jews are
concerned. This disguise hides many ugly characteristics such as
false morality, a pretense of superiority, as well as profound
humanitarian racism.

The best-known Swedish statesman of the postwar period, Olof Palme
was one of Europe's first prominent Holocaust inverters. He was at
the origin of the permeation of anti-Israelism in segments of the
Social Democrats, Sweden's classic government party.

In recent years major anti-Semitic incidents have taken place in
Norway even though there are very few Jews there. The country is a
European leader of anti-Semitic cartoons, sometimes similar to Nazi
ones. Norway is one of the very few countries that forbids Jewish
ritual slaughter. At the same time, it is one of only three countries
in the world that permit the cruel killing of whales.

In this book, thirteen essays and interviews discuss various aspects
of the attitudes of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland
toward Israel and the Jews.

[ha-Safran]: New book announcement: Tails of Sha'ar Hagai

2008-12-11 Thread James J.B.N. DuPrie
Tails of Sha'ar Hagai: A Wild Life With Wildlife

Sephirot Press is (http://www.sephirotpress.com/ ) is proud to
announce the latest title in our "new books" category:

Tails of Sha'ar Hagai:
In Tails of Sha'ar Hagai Myrna Shiboleth takes us with her on an
extraordinary journey; as she emigrates from the United States,
pioneers in Israel, lives and travels in Africa and Europe, and
establishes the breed known as Israel Canaan Dogs. In episodes that
are alternately hilarious and poignant, we join her as she struggles
to set up home in a bullet-ridden, abandoned concrete bunker, and
build a life shared with family, friends, and a variety of furred and
feathered companions.
>From desert-living wild dogs, to Baba the hand-raised hyena;
Ricky the overly curious raccoon, Shusha the fox and Um Fathi, the
local village witch, she shares her stories, and gives insight into
both struggle and strength.
Every one of these amazing characters teaches us something about
what it means to be human.

Re: [ha-Safran]: The latke who could not stop screaming

2008-12-11 Thread MyJewishBooks
I will add my own review of the book from MyJewishBooks.com

Finally, a book that reinforces that Hanukah is not the Jewish
Christmas and is not about presents and gifts.

It is the story of hope in the face of being outnumbered. Here is a
story about a latke in the midst of a Christmas story. It is
screaming and wailing. And why shouldn't it? Someone who lives in the
house without the xmas lights adorning it has tried to fry the latke
in sizzling hot oil. Rather than jumping out of the frynig pan and
into the fire, this little latke heads for the open window.

As the story progresses, we learn about the story of Hanukah and the
misconceptions about the latke and the holiday. A variety of popular
Christmas symbols cross paths with the latke and think it is nothing
more than a hash brown, a nice side meal to a Christmas ham, and more
(or less).

Oh, what a deep and meaningful book this is. It gets more insightful
with each reading. Why do the colored (xmas) lights fail to
understand the latke? Why does the candy cane only focus on its minty
fragrance and have no inclination for understanding that not everyone
desires a peppermint scent? How could a candy stick be so distasteful
under its red and white striped mint coating?

Each confrontation ends with the latke running and screaming in
search of understanding and identity. Until it lands under a pine
tree in a snow covered, deep, dark forest (is this the forest, or the
deepest darkest part of the human Jewish psyche?). Yet again, the
pine tree is only focused on its small, provincial world view. If
something plopped under it, then it must be a present. No?

But wait. A family with an axe approaches the pine forest...

Genes of Sephardic Jews still strong in Spain
Reuters
Published: December 5, 2008
Dear Librarian:
With the interested in all things Jewish gaining strength in the
Iberian Peninsula – we would like to draw your attention to a
brilliant new series about the Jews of Spain.
Toledo and Leon are the first two in a 10 part series that is a
superb addition to any library collection. In a society that
perceives itself as deeply Catholic, there are new and interesting
findings which point to far richer and more diverse roots. In a
recently published article, a report in the American Journal of Human
Genetics is cited as saying that almost a fifth of Spaniards' genes
are of Sephardic Jewish origin and another 11 percent can be traced
to North Africa

Since the beginning of the Middle Ages, Spain was a large and fertile
center for the Jewish community. This unique series addresses the
identity of the Spanish Jewish community in the past and in the
present. Shot on location in Spain, Israel and additional European
and North African countries, the series focuses on the history of the
Jewish community before the expulsion from Spain and its aftermath.
We follow history thru the Golden Age, the Inquisition and into the
birth of the State of Israel.
Already purchased by Yale University, Stanford University and Amherst
College – Toledo and Leon is a beautiful journey into a rich and
fascinating past.
We are pleased to offer you the first two chapters at a special price
of $115 per episodes for school and public libraries – and $300 for
university libraries. The prices do not include shipping and
handling. If you purchase both Toledo and Leon a 10% discount applies.

[Hasafran] The Chosen DVD

2008-12-11 Thread Liz Edelglass
Dear Hasafran friends-

The request below is for a copy of the film "The Chosen" for Jewish
troops in Iraq. The cheapest price for this out-of-print film
through Amazon is $93, and I have been unable to locate it cheaper
anyplace else.

Does anyone know how to get a cheaper copy of this DVD to send to the troops?

Thanks.

Liz and Rhoda,

My cousin's son is serving in Iraq right now, and he is active in the
Jewish center on the base.

They want a copy of the movie "The Chosen" on dvd (see below); on
Amazon it starts at $93.

Do you have any leads/ideas where I could get a cheaper (legal!)
copy? I would wrap and mail it.

Thanks for your help,

Miriam,

I have a little bit of a weird request. After Shabbat services we
(the congregants) were having dinner at the Dining Facility and
talking about Jewish Cinema (and literature) this holiday
season. Without a doubt, we all agreed that the Hebrew Hammer was a
must watch for us. Then we moved on to other movies/books, and I was
shocked to learn that out of the 6 guys who showed interest in a
little Jewish movie group, only 1 other (besides myself) had ever
seen or read Chaim Potok's the Chosen. When we looked on Amazon to
see about ordering it, the price was a little outlandish (a Sgt
quoted me $93). I was wondering if the synagogue or organization you
work for have any copies of the movie (on DVD?) or even the
book. This was one of the more influential Jewish books I had read
growing up, and I vividly remember Dad taking Alan and I to the
movies to see it when it first came out in 1981 (I was 7 and Alan was
4). Even as a 7 year old boy, t he movie was incredibly moving. I
have of course, seen it since, and it is still a memorable film. So,
on the special request front (I certainly don't want anyone spending
$93 for it), if you can locate a reasonably priced copy, I know that
our little congregation would great appreciate it...

Dear colleagues:

On Tuesday September 23, Phil Miller sent a message to ha-safran bringing to
our attention an article that had appeared in Der Welt about the books
stolen by the Nazis that are in the Berlin Libraries.

After reading this article I contacted Ms. Lamble, the author, and asked her
if someone involved in this project would address the attendees at the 2009
AJL convention to be held in Chicago and report on the results and
especially to "tell us about how you are proceeding to locate the previous
owners of these books? How we, as librarians, can, may be, help you in that
process? And anything else that you would like to share with us."

Today I heard that Mrs. Barbara Schneider-Kempf, the Director General of the
Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preu?ischer Kulturbesitz (Berlin State Library
- Prussian Cultural Heritage) will be coming to the convention and present
the process and the results of their scientifically run project

"Stolen books: The Third Reich's Exchange Center and the Prussian State
Library in the years 1933 till 1945. Aspects of the supply with literature
under the control of National Socialism".

We are all so excited and I wanted to share this with you. We hope that
many of you will be here with us to hear her presentation and ask as many
questions as we can.

I can't wait until I welcome you all.

Best,

Our Temple library has always been "staffed" by volunteers whether

We are located in Southern California, and our library has been

[ha-Safran]: Chanukah on the J Site and 127 holiday links

2008-12-11 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is observed for
eight days, beginning on the evening of the 25th day of
the Hebrew month of Kislev. This year Chanukah starts
at sundown, Sunday, December 21, 2008.
Chanukah is a wonderful holiday of renewed dedication,
faith, hope and spiritual light. It's a holiday that says:
"Never lose hope." Chanukah commemorates the victory of a
small band of Maccabees over the pagan Syrian-Greeks who
ruled over Israel.

The J Site - Jewish Education and Entertainment
http://www.j.co.il

has several entertaining features to celebrate Chanukah:

Jewish Trivia Quiz: Chanukah

What does the Hebrew word Chanukah mean ?
What type of foods do we specificaly eat on Chanukah ?
What activities are forbidden during Chanukah ?
Are woman obligated to light the menorah ?
How many candles do we need for all of Chanukah ?
Which family was Judah the Maccabee from ?
How many branches did the menorah in the temple have ?

The above questions are examples from the multiple choice
Flash quiz. There are two levels of questions, two timer settings.
Both kids and adults will find it enjoyable.

Additional Chanukah resources and games on the J site include:
Free Chanukah Clipart
The Multilingual Word Search Game (English / Hebrew / Russian)
The Hebrew Hangman Game
My Hebrew Songbook (Hebrew Song Lyrics)
My Jewish Coloring Book (online / offline)

The J site has something for everyone, but if that is not
enough, I posted on my website 127 links about Chanukah,
from laws and customs to games and recipes.
Site languages include English, Hebrew, Russian, Spanish,
French, Portuguese, German and Italian.

All 127 links have been reviewed / checked this week.
The web address is:
http://www.jr.co.il/hotsites/j-hdaych.htm

Please forward this message to relatives and friends,
so they may benefit from these holiday resources.

Enjoy!
Jacob

Beyond Boundaries: Klezmer Music in the 21st Century

Time:3:00pm - 9:00pm

Location: CUNY Graduate Center , 365 Fifth Avenue between 34th and

The Center will be co-presenting, "Beyond Boundaries: Klezmer Music in the
21st Century". Featuring distinguished Klezmer performers, scholars,
composers and cultural mediators, the event will be comprised of an
afternoon Symposium with Music (3-5:30 PM) and an evening Concert (7-9 PM).

This event is part of the 'Beyond Boundaries Series in Jewish Music'
launched by the Center for Jewish Studies in Spring, 2008. The series seeks
to explore aspects of Jewish music from the perspectives of multiple
geographies, cultural identities and musical styles.

The afternoon symposium with music at 3:00 p.m. will consider the current
state of Klezmer music and its implications for the 21st century.

Moderated by Dr. Marsha Dubrow, Resident Scholar in Jewish Music at the
CUNY Graduate Center's Center for Jewish Studies, the symposium features
noted Klezmer experts Alicia Svigals, Hankus Netsky, Yale Strom, Joel
Rubin, Eve Sicular, Seth Rogovoy, and composer, Stephen Dankner, in a
series of presentations followed by an eclectic conversation that promises
to stimulate rich discussion about Klezmer as a world music genre with a
long history and evolving future.

Klezmer has a many centuries history, but its revival in the late 20th
century has inspired countless musicians of all stripes to jump into the
fray and 'mix it up' with all types of musics including classical, jazz,
hip-hop, reggae, and other pop genres.

The panelists, respected and established in their particular areas, will
explore the current Klezmer scene not only in America, but in Europe,
Israel and beyond, as they consider the possible prospects of the genre for
future generations of musicians and audiences.

The evening concert at 7 p.m. will feature a concert of Klezmer music by
renowned Klezmer ethnographer and performing artist, Yale Strom and his
band, Hot Pstromi, with the illustrious performers from the afternoon
symposium joining in. In addition, internationally-acclaimed classical
cellist, Matt Haimovitz, will perform composer Stephen Dankner's 'Klezmer
Fantasy', a boundary-crossing, contemporary classical work that
incorporates various Klezmer elements, and also a work composed by Yale
Strom, The Ram's Daughter, arranged for cello and piano. Accompanying
Haimovitz will be Geoffrey Burleson, faculty member at Hunter College, CUNY
and Princeton University.

Yale Strom also will present brief film clips from his forthcoming
documentary, "A Great Day on Eldridge Street" marking the gathering in 2007
of over 100 Klezmer musicians in lower Manhattan at the historic Eldridge
Street Synagogue to celebrate the joy of Klezmer music-making and its rich
history.

Among the symposium particpants:

Alicia Svigals – one of the world's leading Klezmer fiddlers and a founder
of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics. She has played with and written for
violinist Itzhak Perlman, the Kronos Quartet, playwrights Tony Kushner and
Eve Ensler, the late poet Allen Ginsburg, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of
Led Zeppelin, singer/songwriter Debbie Friedman, Hasidic superstars Avraham
Fried, and many others. She has appeared on David Letterman, MTV, Good
Morning America, PBS' Great Performances, on NPR's Prairie Home Companion,
Weekend Edition and New Sounds.

Dr. Hankus Netsky – A multi-instrumentalist, composer, and scholar, Vice
President for Education at the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst,
Massachusetts, and Chair of the Contemporary Improvisation Department at
the New England Conservatory in Boston. Netsky is a founder and director of
the Klezmer Conservatory Band, an internationally renowned Yiddish music
ensemble, and serves as research director of the Klezmer Conservatory
Foundation, dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of Yiddish and
Klezmer music traditions. He collaborated with violinist Itzhak Perlman on

[ha-Safran]: Operation Solomon

2008-12-11 Thread Adas Israel Librarian
Chevra,

I thanked you all yesterday for the many replies regarding "Operation Solomon."
I've received so many interesting answers, and requests to let people
know what I found, that I'm sharing them today. I fully expect that
there will continue to be more!

Some of the very interesting things that did not culminate in my
finding an actual DVD to purchase:

The video Journey to the Promised Land: The Long Homecoming of
Ethiopian Jewry (1992, 26 min.) tells the story of the Ethiopian
Jews, culminating in their journey to Israel during Operation
Solomon. It was a project of the World Zionist Organization Dept. of
Information, Electronic Communications Division

I have seen a video (it was in VHS at the time) that was produced by
El Al about the Operation Solomon airlift. It was circulated by the
company ( I am a former sales rep)and I am sure it would be available for use.

Worldcat records two DVDs "Operation Solomon":
1. Operation Solomon
by Israel. Shagrirut (U.S.); Embassy of Israel Collection (Library of
Congress); DVD video
Language: English
Publisher: United States : Embassy of Israel, [1991?]
2. Operation Solomon 2. Operation Solomon DVD video

BJENY has a program that you can see more about at this link
http://www.bjeny.org/682.asp?dept=Educational%20Resources&Programs_ID=14
It was given to us by the Jewish Agency. This program includes a moving
(short) video of the airlift.

Operation Solomon: The last 24 hours
Publisher: Washington : The American Association for Ethiopian Jews,
Publication Date: 1991.
Physical Description: 1 videocassette (9 min.)

Operation Solomon/
arrival of Ethiopians in Israel May 1991. [videorecording]
UJA
1 videocassette (15 min). Guide available.
Coverage by news media, CBS, ABC, CNN & Jerusalem on line.

I don't know about a DVD but JTS has a VHS entitled Operation Solomon (18
mins.) which we received from Alden Films in Clarksburg, NJ. Here's a
summary from our catalog - "Describes Israel's ingathering of Jews
from Ethiopia in May 1991. Includes footage of Operation Solomon, the
airlift of 36,000 Ethiopian Jews from Ethiopia to Israel in one 36
hour period."

Imprint T.V. program "Jerusalem Online": Jerusalem.
Note: 10 yrs. old and up. Operation Solomon was an airlift that
brought more than 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel, and took place in
the period of 30 hours, with over 40 flights. This movie shows the
details of the operation from Ethiopia to Israel, and

Operation Solomon - the last 24 hours.
Imprint 1992
Note: High school and up. On May 24, 1991, the government of Ethiopia
gave permission for the Jews to leave. This film is about that
operation known as the Operation Solomon.

We have several VHS videos on Operation Solomon:
Again the Second Time / By Tavam Limited.-- Jerusalem : Yavam
Limited, 1991. [see info. from Daniel Stuhlman, below]
Program #22: Operation Solomon / By Jerusalem on Line.-- Israel :
Jerusalem On Line, 1991.
Operation Solomon: The Last 24 Hours / By American Association for Ethiopian
Jews.--
Journey to the Promised Land : The Long Homecoming of Ethiopian Jewry
/ Electronic Communications Division of the WZO Department of
Information.-- Jerusalem

You can watch the video on the Scholarships for Ethiopian Jews
website: http://www.sfej.org/operationsolomon/default

and there were many more!

But it was Daniel Stuhlman who supplied the critical piece of information:
The title of the particular film we were looking for is "Again. . .
for the second time." He found it at Movies Unlimited and
Jewishvideo, which is where I should have found it (Ergomedia gets to
the same place).

You can get it from Alden Films, which is an interesting site, but
I've ordered it from Ergo Media/Jewish Video, as I've ordered from
them before. (Same price; $19.95)

So, this is what I've learned:
I should have found this in the first place and didn't look with a
wide enough lens (or, as my old Columbia reference teacher, John
Fahey, would say, as he often did, "open the umbrella wider"),
but what a wonderful response from all of you!
While on the topic, one person also referred to the wonderful
full-length movie, "Live and Become." Don't miss it if you have a
chance to see it.

Thank you all so much for your time, attention, and generosity,

[ha-Safran]: Book Fairs for Jewish Day Schools

2008-12-11 Thread Lisa Katz
Dear School librarians, I am trying to get information on book fairs
for Jewish Day Schools. We are trying to revamp our program and would
love to know what companies, or publishing groups, or ideas other
schools have and how they run their book events and how much money
they make. You may contact me by email at llemo...@pacbell.net. Thank
you! :) Lisa Katz

RE: [ha-Safran]: Volunteer help in libraries vs. paid staff

2008-12-11 Thread Emily Bergman
I am a volunteer, as is my systems/processing person is also a
volunteer. My paid library job is at a local college, and I've
always been lucky to find a student to work in the temple library
rather cheaply. I am glad to say that they always have been
dependable. They work Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings when
there's religious school. They have various tasks like
shelving/checking in and out/ etc. They also work with the religious
school classes. I do cataloging and collection development. I do
think there's a point where you can't keep asking congregants to
volunteer (my fellow volunteer and I have been doing this for 14
years). Once our kids were no longer in religious school, we didn't
want the obligation to be there every week.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Three reasons I like to be in the Library

2008-12-11 Thread Gabor Por
Dear Safranim,

I just want to make sure that the link and quote David Elazar sent to
the list is attributed correctly. The text was written by Noorillah
Karr, one of our faithful volunteers and not by me, Gabor, the
librarian, who runs the blog it was quoted from.

I believe I haven't introduced myself formally to the list, despite
reading it for over a year. I am the Librarian at Congregation Beth
Ami in Santa Rosa, CA. I took over the library from Suzanne
Batzdorff, who has been wanting to retire for a year or more. She is
also on the Hasafran mailing list.

Now I go back to my usual lurking mode and enjoying the high quality posts.

Bye,

Gabor
