Re: [ha-Safran]: The Teaching Company

2008-12-15 Thread Andrea Rapp
I have many of the Teaching Company courses in our library, and many
others at home.
In the library we have the courses by David Ruderman (UPenn) in
Jewish Intellectual History, Gary Rendsburg (Rutgers) on the Book of
Genesis, Bart Ehrman (UNorth Carolina) on New Testament, Patrick
Allitt (Emory) on American Religious History, and a number of
others. These lectures are all outstanding.
I call this section of our collection Jewniversity and it is one
of the most popular sets of materials I've purchased.
Many of my patrons have other Teaching Company classes at home--the
ones on classical music are very, very popular; I buy the ones on
history, intellectual history, the Greeks, etc.
for myself to listen to in the car and while walking.
   New courses are issued frequently, and you seem to have found one;
I will check it out myself, thank you!

I thought the members of this listserv would be interested to know
about SALATA BALADI, a new educational resource now available through
Women Make Movies. As you may know, Women Make Movies is a non-profit
media arts organization and the world's leading distributor of
independent films by and about women.

Award-winning Egyptian filmmaker Nadia Kamel's heritage is a complex
blend of religions and cultures. Her mother is a half-Jewish,
half-Italian Christian who converted to Islam when she married
Nadia's half-Turkish, half-Ukrainian father. Recording the family's
wonderful stories with her mother, Mary Rosenthal, Kamel bumps
unexpectedly into the silence around old prejudices concerning the
estranged Egyptian-Jewish branch of their family living in Israel since 1948.

Bravely inspired to further challenge the boundaries between
cultures, religions, and nationalities used to divide people, Kamel
and her family embark on a personal journey of reconciliation and discovery to
Italy and Israel, confronting with open hearts, fears and prejudices
along the way.

[ha-Safran]: A Jewish Woman's Prayer Book - Review Essay

2008-12-15 Thread Yael Levine
A Jewish Woman's Prayer Book - Review Essay
by Yael Levine

Synopsis:
The basic theme underlying the book, re-claiming women's liturgy, is
a timely one, and deserves to be lauded. However, the present edition
contains mistakes. To err is human. One may argue that the
prestigious Spiegel Grau should seriously consider withdrawing this
edition, until they can produce a new edition free of errors.

A Jewish Woman's Prayer Book, edited by Aliza Lavie, was published
a short time ago by Spiegel Grau. This a totally new edition of the
Hebrew Tefillat Nashim, published in Tel Aviv some three years ago,
and is a bilingual one. Hence, owing to limitations of space, the
choice of prayers is more limited in scope in relation to the Hebrew.
The present book includes prayers, which were originally published in
several languages, including Hebrew, Yiddish, German, and English.
The book also contains prayers composed by several contemporary
Orthodox women. Though I myself am Orthodox, one of the criticisms
voiced in some of the Hebrew reviews was that the volume doesn't
include prayers written by contemporary women who are affiliated with
the Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Reform movements, or women
who are non-affiliated. This has not been altered in the bilingual edition.
*   *   *
The study of Jewish liturgy in general, and women's prayer in
particular, is an utmost present-day cause and interest. Wide
sections of the Jewish population yearn and strive to lead a more
spiritual existence. Thus, the underlying theme of re-claiming
women's liturgy is a timely one. Particularly, from the last decade
of the twentieth century, we have a witnessed a renaissance in the
publication of books containing prayers for or by women, both in
Israel and in the United States. The Merit of our Mothers: A
Bilingual Anthology of Jewish Women's Prayers, edited by Tracy Guren
Klirs, published in 1992, is but one example. The publication of A
Jewish Woman's Prayer Book is a continuation of this trend.
However, despite the positive aspects and underlying theme of the
volume, the most disturbing fact is that the book currently contains
many errors. I will state from the outset, that I intend to relate
and confine this review to the subject matter only, and it is not my
intention to refer here to any of the individuals who were involved
in the preparation of the English edition, but to focus on a sampling
of the problematics.
*   *   *
The new edition of A Jewish Woman's Prayer Book contains errors of
several kinds; contextual and factual, errors in the Hebrew
vocalization; errors in the footnote references, and in the
bibliography. I will offer further on several examples in each of the
areas; it is not the intention of this review to cover the entire
range, but to present a sample.
Additionally, a significant issue is that most of the prayers were
translated from the Hebrew edition. Thus, prayers, which were
originally published in Yiddish, were translated from two languages;
from Yiddish into Hebrew, and from Hebrew into English. Likewise,
with the prayers which were originally published in German. However,
all prayers in languages other then Hebrew should have been
translated from their language of origin, and not undergo double translations.
*   *   *
I will presently furnish two examples of factual errors.
Prayer for the Wedding Day is the subject of pages 61-65. This
prayer was published in the popular Huppat Hatanim by Raphael
Meldola (1754-1828). In the background material it is stated that
This prayer is taken from his book, Huppat Hatanim…, and Rabbi Dr.
Rafael Mildola appears as the author. However, is the introductory
passage to the prayer in Huppat Hatanim, Meldola overtly writes
that the prayer was authored by Rabbi Shem Tov ben Samon. Hence, the
attribution of the prayer, at the very least in the title, to Meldola
is incorrect. Additionally, the family itself spelled their surname
name as Meldola. The letter mem was vocalized with a tzere, and
not with a hirik. Thus Midola is not the correct form.
Pages 319-322 bring excerpts from the Song for Simhat Torah, by
Rivka Tiktiner.
It is stated, inter alia, in the background material on p. 319:
She also published a book called Meineket Rivka. However, this book
was published posthumously, several years following her death.
Further on, it is indeed stated that the book was first published in
Prague in 1609, four years after her death. However, there is no
evidence that she initiated the actual publication, rather the
publisher did. Hence, this seems incorrect.
*   *   *
As mentioned, another problematic area concerns the vocalization of
the Hebrew.
There are words that are incorrectly vocalized. Since the prayers in
this volume are intended for actual recitation, mistakes in the
vocalization have a direct bearing on the ability to recite the
prayers accurately and correctly. I'll list only a few of the
problematic

The Search for Al Qaeda Its Leadership, Ideology, and Future Bruce
Riedel, Brookings Institution Press 2008 c. 224pp.

http://www.brookings.edu/press/Books/2008/searchforalqaeda.aspx
(Elazar Classification no. 891.81)

A former CIA officer, Bruce Riedel focuses on political transition,
terrorism and conflict resolution. He was a senior advisor to three
U.S. presidents on Middle East and South Asian issues.

The Search for al Qaeda reviews how al Qaeda was created and
developed, presenting authoritative and chilling background on The
Manhattan Raid, but Riedel focuses more closely on what has happened
to it since that awful day. He outlines al Qaeda's ultimate goals,
which are to drive America out of the Muslim world, to destroy
Israel, and to create a jihadist caliphate larger than the Ottoman
Empire at its height. The profiles and subsequent analysis reveal the
network's multipronged strategy for accomplishing those goals:

1) Draw America into bleeding wars like the one that drove the
Soviets from Afghanistan.
2) Build a safe haven for al Qaeda in Pakistan.
3) Develop other franchises in the Islamic world that can overthrow
pro-American regimes.
4)Conduct more Western attacks along the lines of 9/11 or the transit
bombings in Madrid and London.

The book concludes with a strategy for dealing with—and
defeating—this most dangerous menace.

[ha-Safran]: Teaching Holocaust in Elementary Schools

2008-12-15 Thread Rachel Glasser
My PreK-8 modern Orthodox school is working on a policy for teaching
the Holocaust. I am looking for any policies or guidelines that your
schools may have which might help us formulate our policy. We do a
major unit in 8th grade which culminates in an original production
each year, but selected teachers in the younger grades are also
teaching Holocaust units and some parents have objected.
Thank you for your help, and I will be happy to share or post the
responses I receive.
Rachel Glasser

[ha-Safran]: Parashah book for lower elementary children?

2008-12-15 Thread Marga Hirsch
A congregant has posed the question below. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Marga
We are looking for a book or a series which is age appropriate and
will introduce our 7 1/2-year-old to the weekly parsha. We'd like to
be able to read it with her each Shabbat and incorporate it into our
Shabbat evening ritual.

We've looked into this a bit and found a series called Tell Me the
Story which comes in a 5 book series but we haven't purchased anything yet.

2008-12-15 Thread Etta Gold
Greetings, All...
I just want to share with you a very positive experience we just had
with author Mark Werner (Army Fatigues: Joining Israel's Army of
International Volunteers) - and urge you to book him for a speaking
event at your libraries/synagogues.
Mark is so committed to spreading the word about this worthwhile and
necessary program that he covers his own expenses and comes well
prepared to speak enthusiastically to any audience. He was our guest
speaker yesterday and truly inspired all of us. See attachment for
more information or contact me for details.

Joining Israel's Army of International Volunteers

Making A Contribution to Israel:

What Can We Do To Support This Worthwhile
Cause In A Personal Way?

Take a look at how one individual made a contribution
to the Israeli Army by stepping out of his comfort zone.

LEARN FIRST-HAND ABOUT:

•
What motivates an average American
to make a bold move in order to
contribute to Israel?
•
Real life in the Israeli army barracks and
the various types of work IDF soldiers
perform on a daily basis.
•
Living in Israel during stressful times
and how Israeli civilians cope during
tense times such as the second Intifada and almost daily
bus bombings.
•
Various accounts of other idealistic volunteers who served
with the author.
•
What does an individual gain from an extraordinary
experience such as this one?
