Va-Yehi ba-Hazi ha-Lailah

Additional Stanzas Concerning Women

Yael Levine

The piyyut (liturgical hymn) Va-Yehi ba-Hazi ha-Lailah (It Was In the
Middle of the Night), recited at the seder, was composed by the
classic liturgical poet Yannai. The piyyut refers to events that
occurred at various times in Jewish history on Passover night. Most
of these events involved male personalities, though there is one
indirect reference to Sarah who was taken to Avimelekh on the eve of
Passover. However, references to events on the Eve of Passover
involving female figures are found in various places in the midrashic
literature, and based on these sources, I composed in 2002 two
additional stanzas, consisting of three lines each, to Va-Yehi
ba-Hazi ha-Lailah. The Hebrew text with an English translation was
published in various places, including in the haggadah by Joel B.
Wolowelsky, Women at theSeder: A Passover Haggadah, New York: Ktav,
2005, pp. 90–91. In the past year it was published in Hashmi'ini Et
Kolech, a volume marking a decade since the establishment of
Kolech, as well as in Dirshuni, a compilation of midrashim
written by Israeli women.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Cataloguing Judaeo-German

2010-03-17 Thread Aaron Kuperman
No, the question is whether there is a distinct Judeo-German language,
as opposed to Yiddish. Do Yiddish speakers (writers) using what they
perceive as standard German constitute a new language, or merely Yiddish
affecting Germanism beyond the rather high percentage of German that is
normally with Yiddish.

All I was thinking of was German in Hebrew script = Judeo-German, which is
well attested, though rather limited in time and place. Obviously I should
have paid closer attention.

[ha-Safran]: Yiddish and Judeo-German

2010-03-17 Thread mgloger
Yiddish and German.

Although Yiddish and German share a large vocabulary, there are significant
differences in grammar. When deciding whether something is German in
Hebrew characters, or Yiddish it is important to look at the placement of
the verb, use of ayn/ayne (ein, eine) versus a as the indefinite article,
in addition to a general absence of Slavic words.

Older Yiddish tends to be more Daytschmerish and use extra hey's where more
modern Yiddish does not (compare the Harkavy orthography to that of
Weinreich). Therefore orthography can be misleading.

As to language or dialect, the most appropriate answer is probably a
Creole. Yiddish is as intelligible to a German speaker as Creole to a
French speaker or Krio and Gullah to an English speaker. Yiddish and
German differ more than Serbian and Croatian or Moldovan and Romanian, both
pairs of languages written in Latin and Cyrilic.

[ha-Safran]: Yiddish

2010-03-17 Thread Margo Gutstein
I must apologize for my post on Yiddish, which offended so
many. Clearly, I do not know enough about Yiddish to have expressed
any opinion on the matter, and I probably mis-remembered what I was
told years ago when I was in graduate school. Of course Yiddish and
German are not the same; the kindest thing that can be said about my
post is that it was a vast overgeneralization of a broad linguistic
principle, and I regret clicking the send button on that one. From
now on I will keep my uninformed thoughts on such matters to myself,
where they belong.

To all those who were offended, please accept my sincere apology.

I hope by now most of you have received your copy of the Feb/Mar

[ha-Safran]: Web catalogs

2010-03-17 Thread Toby Harris
Dear Hasafraners:

I use Athena software, version 9.3 for my catalog. I would really
like it to be accessible on the web but do not have that software and
it is no longer available. I am not planning to upgrade anytime in
the near future. What is required to do that? Do I need
software? Just code? How does one do it?

No access to patron records is needed right now – just the catalog.

Thanks for your enlightenment,
