Re: [ha-Safran]: LP records

2010-05-23 Thread Schelly Talalay Dardashti
Jewish records - anything with Jewish content - should be sent to
Florida Atlantic University's Judaica Music Archives, which began
life as the "Judaica Music Rescue Project" in 2002 with some 1,000
recordings. Nathan Tinanoff was and still is the director.

http://faujsa.fau.edu/

Currently, it has some 60,000 recordings and is part of the newly
created FAU Library's Sound Archives (LSA) which also houses major
collections of historic 78-rpm records and jazz recordings (in
conjunction with FAU's Music Department).

It receives donations from individuals and institutions - some 10,000
per year. About 12 major institutions are involved in the
JGA-Research Station. Also making significant donations to the
preservation effort include Baltimore Hebrew University, Spertus
Institute of Jewish Studies (Chicago), and University of Central
Florida (Orlando). The National Yiddish Book Center has also been
involved in the development of the JSA.

"The primary mission of the Judaica Sound Archives at FAU Libraries
is to collect, preserve, and digitize Judaica sound recordings; to
create educational programs highlighting the contents of this rich
cultural legacy; and to encourage the use of this unique scholarly
resource by students, scholars and the general public."

Contact director Nathan Tinanoff to ask about their interest in what
you might have. FAU's archive is amazing, digitized and growing all
the time. Items that may have been trashed are now accessible to researchers.

The JSA website is http://jsa.fau.edu/ and its blog is
http://faujsa.fau.edu/blog/. The LINKS tab offers more information
and useful sites, including Sephardic music.

Among my personal finds: Several early 1900s recordings made by my
great-great-uncle Hazzan Avram Jassen (variously listed as A. Yssen
or Avraham or Abraham Jassen), a wunderkind chazzan from Belarus. In
New York, he had a Brooklyn congregation and also sung at the Met.

With best wishes

[ha-Safran]: Strange request

2010-05-23 Thread Johnson, Naomi
Our congregation has an upcoming Bat Mitzvah. When we opened the Torah
she will be using, there was a rip starting at the bottom.

Is there some "bandAide fix" that we can use until we get a Sofer to
repair it correctly?

We just need some sort of mechanism to prevent it from ripping further
until we can send it away.

Thank you!

Stingy Buzi and King Solomon / Der karger Buzi un Shloymeh Hameylekh,
written and illustrated by Goldie Sigal. Montreal: Lomir Hofn
Press, 2009. 82 p.: col. ill.

I am pleased to announce that my Yiddish/English "comic book" was
awarded a 2010 Helen and Stan Vine Canadian Jewish Book Award. The
following is a quote from the jury citation:

"A heritage is passed from generation to generation through
storytelling. Yiddish especially lends itself to
storytelling. Stingy Buzi and King Solomon is a delightful tale for
children told in Yiddish, English as well as Yiddish transliterated
into English. Written and illustrated by Goldie Sigal, retired as
Judaica Librarian at McGill University, it is based on legends and
folktales about King Solomon as interpreted in a Yiddish play which
was mimeographed by Montreal Folk Shule teacher, J.J. Grossman, in
the 1940s. Sigal takes the traditional Yiddish tale and presents it
as a colourful modern graphic novel with appeal to children today."

Price: $18 per book, plus shipping and handling.

(Optional) 9 page workbook by Batia Bettman, ill. by Goldie Sigal: $2.00

[ha-Safran]: Open Source ILS

2010-05-23 Thread Greer H
Hi all,
I work at a small combined Jewish High School/Jewish Community
Library, and we're looking for a new ILS (we've been using Winnebago
and it's getting really outdated and klunky). I've heard good things
about Evergreen, the open ILS, and it's free, but I'm wondering if
anyone else has tried to use it-- with or without a sysadmin and/or
support team. And if you've used it without a support team, how easy
was it to set up and manage?

Thanks,

RE: [ha-Safran]: Suggestions for Grade 5 graduation gifts

2010-05-23 Thread library
I recommend the book, Mitzvah Magic, by Danny Siegel with Naomi
Eisenberger. Each chapter has a true story of how individuals or
groups have taken initiative to bring about positive changes to their
communities or to special populations, such as at nursing homes,
hospitals, etc. Related color photos accompany each story.

At the end of each short story is a section, "What can I do?" with
ideas for children and teens to organize similar mitzvah projects.

The laminated paperback copy typically costs $9.00 or $10.00.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Suggestions for Grade 5 graduation gifts

2010-05-23 Thread ALBA TOSCANO
Susan

>Do any of you have ideas of a suitable book... as a Grade 5 Graduation gift?
>
Oh! Bless me, but I suddenly feel a story coming on:

When I was a kid, precisely at Shavuot time, my little sister gave me
a little song book with 18 jewish holiday songs in it which she had
hoisted from the shoe box where all the songbooks in her
Sunday-school classroom were stored. I don't know if it was the
thrill of her having stolen it just for me (afterall it's the thought
that counts) or having risked capture and disgrace knowing I had
wanted one so much (my classroom teacher was not half so
trusting...), but the booklette was very precious to me. I remember
taking the booklette and my song flute out only when I knew that my
parents were off buying tomatoes and Rice Crispies.

A short while ago Little Sister, now a junior high school librarian
in her own right, while reorganizing the hallway cupboard at my mom's
house, pulled the booklette out during our weekly SKYPE chit-chat. We
sang all the songs, re-told stupid sunday school stories and
commented on whether we should return the booklette or not. Sadly for
our souls, we have it on good authority that no longer do the
teachers, the sunday school nor the synagogue exist so that option
got pretty much trashed.

Anyways. We are always looking for appropriate children's novels with
jewish content, which is nice of course no arguments there, but
rarely do we suggest a bencher or songbook with perhaps a CD. Maybe a
song flute to go along with it (...to drive his/her parents ever so
slightly nuts). I remember that when I was a kid, "how-to" was very
big. Jewish origami book? How-to Throw Your Own Jewish-theme Party
book? or maybe Keeping Kosher Kamp Kookbook for your favourite
GirlGuide/Boy Scout enthusiast?

Happy Shavuot to one and all

Call for Papers: Journal of Religious & Theological Information

Next deadline: July 1, 2010

The Journal of Religious & Theological Information invites
submissions for its Fall 2010 issue. JRTI is a peer reviewed journal
published by Routledge and focused on the selection, organization,
dissemination, digitization, and preservation of information within
the context of religious studies and related fields. By
"information" we refer to both print and electronic, and both
published and unpublished information (e.g., archives and special
collections). JRTI is pluralistic in scope, and encourages
submissions from a variety of religious perspectives, including
Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and indigenous religious traditions.

For more details see http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/~mstover/jrti.html

RE: [ha-Safran]: Suggestions for Grade 5 graduation gifts

2010-05-23 Thread Andrea Rapp

for young people, called "Homeland," which won some awards about 2 years ago.
