[ha-Safran]: Literary Resource Center (LRC) from Gale
When I sent this the HaSafran last month, it was rejected as possible spam. I've edited the version below to leave out a few (deserved) exclamation marks and other expressions of surprise and alarm, hoping to avoid triggering the filters this time. -- Lee Original Message I've been working on a research project that has me looking for sources in places I don't usually use. Last evening, I found myself using Gale's (yes, that Gale) Literary Resource Center, specifically the Works Search feature. After some success looking for published stories by authors' names, I noticed that the system offered category searches under headings such as Nationality and Author Ethnicity. Therefore I thought I'd see what comes up under Jewish American. However, there is no category for Jewish American writers. Hmmm. African American, Arab American, Asian American, French Canadian, Hispanic American, Native American, ok, but Jewish American, no. I thought, maybe this isn't an oversight, but an editorial decision based on an assumption that Jewish authors aren't that hard to find. These other categories were provided in order to tease out more difficult-to-find categories. However, as long as I was poking around, I looked at the Nationality category for Israel and was gratified to see Israeli listed. But then I noticed Israelite just below it. I tried the Israelite search just for kicks and it fails (No exact matches were found...) so I'll guess we'll never know what they had in mind. Nothing earth-shaking here, but a heads-up all the same. -- Lee Jaffe, UC Santa Cruz --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org

[ha-Safran]: Bibliography and censorship
Dear Safranim, Some of you may be interested to learn about a bibliographical matter Prof. Jeffrey Tigay, a scholar of the Hebrew Bible at the University of Pennsylvania, brought to my attention today. It involves the publication in the mid-1970s of a critical edition, based on manuscripts, of Yehudah he-hasid's commentaries on the Torah. If you have the first edition of this work (Perushe ha-torah) in your collection, it wouldn't be evident from the title page that this first printing actually went through several printings, reflecting a controversy at the time that resulted in the expurgation of four passages. Below, you will find Prof. Tigay's detailed analysis of Penn's holdings of four different copies, reflecting three different printed versions of the so-called first edition.. At Prof. Tigay's suggestion, I brought these copies and information to our Hebraica cataloger Ruth Rin, who revised the cataloging record and and solved the cataloging issues involved. Students interested in this text will now be able to recognize the textual variants in this edition. You will find Ruth's record below, and includes Prof. Tigay's research: Author: Judah ben Samuel, ca. 1150-1217. Title: Perushe ha-Torah. Publisher: Yerushalayim, [Langeh], [1974 or 1975] 735. Description: Book 13, 216 p. 24 cm. LC Subject(s): Bible. O.T. Pentateuch --Commentaries. Notes: Includes index. The ed. of Yehudah He-Hasid's commentary on the Torah: Perushe ha-Torah le-Rabi Yehudah he-H asid. Yerushalayim : Langeh, 5735 [1974 or 1975], edited by Isaac Samson Lange, contains four passages stating that certain passages in the Torah were added later than Moses, ranging in time from Joshua to the Anshe Keneset ha-Gedolah, and that King David removed certain psalms from the Torah and transferred them to the book of Psalms. Those passages aroused controversy and the volumes were recalled; the pages with the offending passages were removed and were replaced with new pages minus the offending passages. The process is concisely described by I. Ta-Shma in his article: Mashehu 'al bik oret ha-Mik ra be-Ashkenaz bi-yeme ha-benayim, in: ha-Mik ra bi-re'i mefarshav / ed. by Sara Japhet. Jerusalem : Magnes, 1994, p. 453. -- Penn owns four copies of this work, with at least one volume reflecting each stage in its publication, as seen in the local note below. -- This entry provided by Prof. Jeffrey Tigay. [ha-Safran]: Solidarity in the face of hate
Dear Safranim, I recently learned about and feel it is important to share with you below news of hateful acts that have been committed against Jewish religious groups, Jewish books, and Jewish culture in Bloomington, Indiana. It should be made absolutely clear, first of all, that the city of Bloomington, Indiana University officials, and other members of the community have responded immediately and admirably. I send this message for two purposes: 1) to make you aware of the situation and 2) in support of our colleague and fellow Judaica librarian Noa Wahrman who has had to address the vandalism done to Hebrew books and to respond to questions from the public. Let us hope none of us has to face a similar situation, but in the meantime I strongly wish to send a message of support via hasafran to Noa. From the Herald Times (Bloomington, Indiana), Tuesday, November 30, 2010 www.heraldtimesonline.com More anti-Semitic attacks at Indiana University By Abby Tonsing and Michael Malik 331-4245 | atons...@heraldt.com 331-4370 | mma...@heraldt.com 11/30/2010 A series of anti-Semitic acts of vandalism aimed at various Jewish facilities on and near campus has caused Indiana University police to contact local FBI officials and members of the U.S. Department of Justice for help with their investigation. On Monday, eight different Hebrew texts were taken from the shelves at Indiana University's Wells Library and distributed to eight different men's bathrooms, where they were thrown in toilets and urinated on, university officials confirmed. The defiled books were found on the sixth and seventh floors in the research collections section of the library. On Tuesday morning within the same hour, two more rock throwing incidents at Jewish facilities were reported to police. At 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, someone threw a rock into the staff directory sign of the Jewish Studies Program in Goodbody Hall. And earlier at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, the Chabad House Jewish Student Center got hit with a rock for the second time in a week this time, a rock was hurled through an upstairs apartment window and struck a wall, according to Chabad House Rabbi Yehoshua Chincholker. He meant to hit people, not only windows, this is my assumption, he said. A woman was in the apartment when the rock was thrown, but was not injured, according to a news release from campus police. It seems to be escalating, IU's director of Jewish Studies Program Jeffrey Veidlinger said. He said the of the recent acts of vandalism, especially the defiling of the Hebrew texts, are being used to intimidate and instill fear in the Jewish community. People are worried. People are concerned. Veidlinger said the books that were destroyed were all commentaries on the Talmud, the code of Jewish law, and are considered sacred. Anyone who knows anything about the defilement of books that's disturbing, he said. Indiana University police are looking for a person of interest seen in the area right after the vandalism to the staff directory at Goodbody Hall happened, according to Indiana University police Chief Keith Cash. While this man wasn't seen throwing a rock, he was seen in the area right after the damage occurred, he said. The man is described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall with grayish blond hair and a gray beard, between 40 and 50 years old, according to a IUPD statement. The man was wearing a yellow jacket over a hooded sweatshirt and off-white pants, the statement said. He was last seen near Ballantine Hall about 8 a.m. Tuesday. Monday's and Tuesday's three reports of vandalism are just the latest in a series of anti-Semitic incidents reported in a week's time, which includes rocks being thrown through windows at Jewish centers for students. In the first reported act of vandalism on Tuesday, Nov. 23, members of the Chabad House discovered that a limestone rock had been thrown through one of the sanctuary's windows at the back of the building. We are very disturbed because we feel that we are helpless, Chincholker said Tuesday morning, after a second rock had been thrown through a window at the center. Members of the Hillel Center discovered a rock had been thrown through one of their kitchen windows on Saturday. No one had been in the center at 730 E. Third St. since Tuesday night. Members of the United Presbyterian Church, at 1701 E. Second St., where a Jewish group meets, discovered a rock had been thrown through a window on Nov. 20. They did not report the vandalism until Nov. 28, according to Bloomington police Lt. David Drake. Rabbi Steven Ballaban said members of Temple Shir Tikvah meet at the church. He described the rock used as a 32-pound rock. Indiana University police have increased patrols, by uniformed and plain-clothed officers, in the area since the first report of vandalism at the Chabad House on Nov. 23. We've taken other measures, Cash said. Because the acts appear to be motivated

[ha-Safran]: JEWISH REVIEW OF BOOKS
On Sunday afternoon, AJL's Greater Cleveland Chapter had its annual Jewish Book Month Tea. Abraham Socher, the editor of the Jewish Review of Books and director of the Jewish Studies Program at Oberlin College was the speaker and his talk, with lively discussion afterwards, inspired me to urge all Jewish librarians to subscribe to the Jewish Review of Books if you haven't already. The fourth issue will be published in January and in one short year, a whole new forum for Jewish ideas, Jewish books, and Jewish culture has emerged as a bright light in the Jewish community. Who writes for it? Some of the best thinkers in Jewish life today: Hillel Halkin, Robert Alter, Dara Horn, and Ruth Wisse to name a few. What is the writing like? Intelligent, erudite but readable accessible to the lay reader. What is its point of view? Here is Abe Socher's statement from the first issue: The Jewish Review of Books is a forum, not a platform; a conversation, not a polemic. In particular, it is founded in the conviction that the ideas and achievements of Jewish religion, literature, and scholarship are interesting and valuable in and of themselves. They are not reducible to any position or program, no matter how worthy. The subscription rate is very low - $19.95 for one year in the U.S. and $29.95 in Canada - and subscription information can be found atwww.jewishreviewofbooks.com. If you don't already subscribe, do yourself, your library collection, and your readers a favor and sign up now. Jewish libraries are about ideas and ideas abound in the new Jewish Review of Books! [ha-Safran]: SSDSEU is now Golda Och Academy
Hello Friends! On December 6th, 2010, Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union was officially named Golda Och Academy. Golda Och and her husband, Dr. Michael Och, were among the founders of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union in 1965. Here's an article about the renaming and the generous donation that comes with it. It's a very exciting time! http://njjewishnews.com/article/statewide/gift-to-schechter-is-game-and-name-changer I have also taken the opportunity to completely redesign our library website. Unfortunately, part of that redesign has meant that my resource pages are now secure pages requiring a password for access so that we can use Secure Referring URL authentication for our databases.
