[ha-Safran]: Organization of resource center
I have been lurking for many years on this list. Recently I started working in a Jewish setting and would like to pick the collective brain regarding: 1) Best type of catalog system? We have mostly religious materials. 2) How to handle sefarim, books, curriculum materials, and art? (Eventually we plan to catalog all items in our educational center which houses various media totaling several thousand items.) 3) We have a limited budget for software. Any suggestions? 4) I have heard about websites such as LibraryThing- do any of these offer limits on Internet access? [ha-Safran]: New Book Hardbitten Memories
Mazo Publishers announces the publication of Hardbitten Memories: In The Blink Of An Eye: Memories Of A Child Born In A Displaced Persons Camp by Yaakov Reinbach Yaakov Reinbach's odyssey from his birth in a displaced persons camp in Germany, through growing up and living in the United States, and finally setting up a home in Israel, may not be typical of all children of Holocaust survivors. Likewise all children of Holocaust survivors did not necessarily have the same personal experiences or develop the same sensitivities he did. However, his descriptions of the difficulties he had communicating with his father, his contact with the world of youthful rebellion in the 1960s, his brushes with anti-Semitism, his fateful meetings with charismatic rabbis and his growing awareness of the importance of Judaism for his personal life, will strike a chord with many readers. Hardbitten Memories: At the Blink of an Eye stands as an authentic testament of a child of Holocaust survivors coming of age in America and coming to terms with his parents' past. [ha-Safran]: A new book, Chestnut Roulette, by Jan Kot.
Mazo Publishers announces the publication of a new book, Chestnut Roulette, by Jan Kot. This story is the special saga of a Jewish youth from Lvov who outwits the Nazis and the Luftwaffe during WWII. It is truly a lottery for life. The author, who lives today in Israel, remembers and documents in Chestnut Roulette, the extermination, the wish to revolt, and the resourcefulness of the Kashtans in the midst of the Nazi inferno. The Kashtans (Polish for Chestnut) were a group of young men who grouped together to remain alive. Kot tells us from a different approach, about the Gentiles. These are the non-Jews who helped him stay alive. He presents in this true story the fact that not all of them were against us. Kot does not permit prejudices or blind hatred to possess him. Amongst all the amazing things that Kot did to survive, he even found himself as a member of the German Air Force. Here is how Kot describes his emotion-filled story: In the first days when the swastika flew over my city of Lvov, I dreamt of describing and transmitting my torments, as a fraction of the pain of many. During the Holocaust I was infrequently, and in exceptional moments of grace, able to write down a few words. In recent years these jottings together with a few documents and photographs, creased or torn enabled me to reconstruct those events and their accompanying disillusionment, more difficult to heal than physical illness. Let me point out straight away that in my writing I have not left out the moments in which my spirit or that of my friends sought refuge in the beauty of nature, in love or in jokes. All of these represented, perhaps, a kind of self-healing and made it possible to preserve sanity. If in the third millennium my long-time dream has been fulfilled, that is to say that I have been able to overcome my frailties and deficiencies and my ability to express myself in writing has increased, this is a result of the encouragement of people who have heard my story or read passages which I wrote, among them Dr. Nili Keren and Professor Shevah Weiss. In my writing I am fulfilling an obligation to the murdered and to the heroes, and I feel certain that they, respected and dear to me, somewhere in the heavens, will understand my desire to present a balanced picture. I have also fulfilled an obligation to those who lived with a borrowed identity, described in the language of those who work in code Kasztan (Kashtan Polish for chestnut) who with ruse and resourcefulness fought for their lives. Many of them did not have the good fortune to be saved; their struggle and their suffering remain unknown. In my story, personal and true, I hope to decode, if only a little, their black box. Here are abridged comments about Jan Kot and Chestnut Roulette: Professor Shevah Weiss, Former Chairman of the Council of Yad Vashem, and Israel's Ambassador to Poland: Jan Kot is counted among that group of Holocaust survivors that still, in the days of darkness and obscurity, there was kindled in their hearts the aspiration: to remember and to remind Professor Charlotte Vardi University of Haifa, Professor of Comparative Literature and Holocaust Author: Chestnut Roulette describes an odyssey, not a product of fantasy, of young men during World War II. It is emotional and will draw the reader to wonder how they managed to survive their adventures. Jan Kot's prose stands out for an honest presentation. [ha-Safran]: Dewey vs. Weine?
How does the updated Dewey Classification System compare with Weine? I am working on cataloging a Judaic library and as far as I can tell, my best options are Dewey and Weine. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each one? The majority of the material is Judaic and there are many types of materials (audio-visual, periodicals, books, toys, etc). The end result needs to be highly organized but also user friendly. Thanks very much and I will summarize for the list. Sorry if this is a repost but I didn't see my other post on the listserv. Re: [ha-Safran]: Censorship of books in US prison libraries
This does seem another example of censorship that AJL might very well wish to comment on. Oversight of this process is crucial to maintain our constitutional rights. Note however, that the ADL has taken the position that the concern that some religious texts may be inflammatory and should be examined. Excerpts from The Jewish Week and a couple of other sources give the context of this debate and would enlighten this debate: The new rule follows release of a report last September by George Washington University and the University of Virginia that warned that American prisons had become a major breeding ground for Islamic terrorists. Three inmates at the federal prison in upstate Otisville a Jew, a Christian and a Muslim have filed suit against the federal Bureau of Prisons seeking to reverse the policy after it was implemented there late last month. Five Orthodox Jewish groups and the American Jewish Committee have all challenged the bureaus handling of this issue. In a letter this week to Harley Lappin, the bureaus director, the AJCs general counsel, Jeffrey Sinensky claimed that to arbitrarily cap the number of books available to inmates unjustifiably punishes those seeking both religious inspiration and texts that are essential for the proper observance of their faith. There are about 5,000 Jewish inmates in federal prisons around the country, according to the ALEPH Institute, which runs prison programs and arranges rabbinic visitation for Jewish inmates. In my experience his references were very useful, drawn from his mesora/tradition. ii - My teacher, Mar (Mister) Stern told us stories about Kton ton Bagelhoff, also stories about the people of Chelm. I don't know if I found that my lif was so much better than the people of Chelm, rather I thought that the stories represented the wisdom of the simple people in a world that is often amuk - in contrast to morality tales that line everything up with perfect villians and saints.
