[ha-Safran]: Torah Anthology

2010-10-11 Thread Jeff Corbett
Does anyone have a source to purchase the complete 45 volume Tanach
set of Torah Anthology (Me'am Loez) translated into English by Rabbi
Aryeah Kaplan?

A non-profit Jewish learning organization was inquiring and I offered
to post their request to the list.

They would be willing to purchase the set new or used.

Thanks,

The problem is that One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is not about
the Holocaust...it's about the Russian Gulag under Stalin.

For the Russian perspective of the Holocaust I would suggest
   http://www.gusen.orgwww.gusen.org, which discusses Russian
POWs in WWII used as slave labor
briefly. While Russian POWs, Jewish or not, were murdered by the
millions,
those who survived the winter of 1941-42 were used as slave labor in the
quarries at Gusen I and labor camps elsewhere. Most Russian Jews were
murdered by the Einsatzgruppen, special killing squads sent into
Russia to
kill Jews and Russian commissars after the Wehrmacht.Students will find
information about the Einsatzgruppen many placesbut, again, this has
nothing to do with Ivan Denisovich.

Considering that millions of non-Jewish Russians POWs were starved,
beaten, or shot to death, I would think that one perspective gained by
researching their experience is that the Nazi state was good at murder.
Although they planned to murder a large number of Poles and Russians and
turn the conquered areas into slave states, they did not plan and attempt
to kill all Poles or all Russians. This distinction was reserved
for Jews,
hence the unfortunate uniqueness of the Holocaust of the Jews.

  Hello,
A person claiming to be a Dr. Rossi from the African American
Society just called our library insisting that we preview their
encyclopedia set African Americans in the 21st Century. They
claimed it was published by the African American Society and Oxford
Press. When I informed him that it was not listed on Oxford Presses
website, he said maybe it was somewhere else.
I found information on this scam posted by the Massachusetts Board
of Library Commissioners at
http://mblc.state.ma.us/hypermail-archives/cmrls/0711/8724.php;
under Sales call African American Society
If you receive this call, refuse any preview copies.
Also let your mail staff know to refuse any packages from the
African American Society as it is a scam organization.

[ha-Safran]: A Reader for a Non-Jew

2005-03-01 Thread Jeff Corbett
Double check with your Rabbi if this is advisable in the first place.
From what I have heard, it is not always advisable in every situation to
teach Non-Jews about Judaism, unless they have the intention of converting.
This may not be the case with you and it may be okay to give them what you
are asking for, however, it would not hurt and might even be helpful to
mention this idea to your Rabbi. It is also possible that your Rabbi may
have the exact resource that you are looking for.

[ha-Safran]: B'nai Machshava Tova

2005-01-04 Thread Jeff Corbett
Does anyone know anything about the safer, B'nai Machshava Tova by the
Pizetzner Rebbe?

Our Rabbi requested 20 - 25 copies ordered and I would just like to get a
little information on the book, so that I can talk intelligently about it
to others.

All that I know is that it is only available in Hebrew and is thin.

If anyone else has any more information on the book or it's author, I would
greatly appreciate it.

Also, although our Rabbi asked me to order it through one of the Jewish
Bookstores here in Toronto, I am sure that he would not be upset if we
ended up finding it somewhere else, so I would entertain any quotes for the
purchase of 20 - 25 copies.

Thank you.

[Ha-Safran] Must you put your feet together when saying kaddish?

2003-10-27 Thread Jeff Corbett
Hi. A patron asked a question that, do to our limited resources, we were
unable to look up the answer. The question is: Most people know that when
you say kaddish, you put your feet together. However, is this halacha or
just a custom? Which ever it is, is there a source for this?

Thank you.

[Ha-Safran] Geniza for non-Jewish books

In Library: An Unquiet History there is a mention of genizas. In
Jewish tradition ritual texts, especially texts that mention God, could
not be destroyed. Genizas were storehouses to contain these texts that
could not be destroyed when their useful life was up.

This made me think of a library that I read about that I believe is in
Chicago that collects books that other libraries or institutions are
discarding. They accept a discarded book if they can find that less than
a certain number of libraries own that title. Does anyone on the LBC
list know the name of this library?

Could you be thinking of a last copy center?

Illinois did a survey asking about the interest of a last copy center.
See www.niulib.niu.edu/ccm/IBHE_99-00.html

New Hamshire apparently has one. See www.state.nh.us/nhsl/lcc/

Could you be thinking of the Center for Research Libraries?
http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/
CRL got its start as a shared repository for little-used materials from a
group of midwestern universities. To learn more, at the above URL, click
on About CRL and then on CRL History.

[Ha-Safran] Information business

2003-10-01 Thread Jeff Corbett
Dear Dan.

You made me jump back in my chair! I was surprised that you wrote,
Likewise, I don't believe, contrary to what appears to be the view of many
in our profession today, that we are or should be in the information
business. It could be that I misunderstood your comment. When you see a
librarian, is all you see a person who shelves books and dusts bookshelves?
I am sure not! Don't you see the informational services that librarians and
library workers provide in libraries these days? Heck, my qualifications
here in Toronto from my community collage program is Library and
Information Technician.

[ha-Safran]: Chromatic Haggadah and The Prophet of San Nicandro

2003-09-23 Thread Jeff Corbett
Hello. I was asked to find information on purchasing the following two
books.

1) Chromatic Haggadah (possible title.) It was described to me as a haggadah
that is colour coded showing the different eras when the different sections
of the haggadah were added throughout history to come out with the haggadah
that we use today.

2) The Prophet of San Nicandro by Phinchas Lapid(e?). No description.

If you have sources for purchasing these titles, please let me know and I
will pass your information on to the patrons.

Thanks.
