[ha-Safran]: Redemption

2009-08-10 Thread Paula Sandfelder
Dear Friends,

My Book Club (of which I am the discussion leader) is reading Not
Me by Michael Lavigne. In the book there is the line He did not
ask to be forgiven, nor did he seek punishment. He

sought redemption. This is probably the most important line in the book.

It is very easy to find a Christian view of REDEMPTION. It is more
difficult to understand the JEWISH definition of the same word.

Any ideas would be helpful.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Placing stones upon a Jewish burial '; tallitot

2009-06-17 Thread Paula Sandfelder
Funny Story! It's very hard to find pebbles in our GA red clay soil, so the
synagogue made it a project for young students to paint stones to be put in
the birdbath which is conveniently located as you enter that synagogue's
area of the cemetery. As I placed a stone on my husband's z'l grave, I
looked to my left at the next grave and there was a beautifully colored
stone with the inscription Mazel Tov I nearly cracked up with laughter.

[ha-Safran]: Card Catalog

2007-11-29 Thread Paula Sandfelder
Friends,

Does anyone know of a program that produces Card Catalog cards, and
spine labels and book pocket labels using a laser or inkjet
printer? I have been producing catalog cards and book labels for a
very small Jewish Family Service library using Library Helper (circa
1985) and a tractor feed printer.(You didn't think there were any of
them still around!) I catalog about 100 books a year for them. My
printer which is even older than the program is about to
die. Finding ribbons for it is also a challenge. This time I had to
print one label at a time. I don't know if the program or the
printer or both are dying!I don't think they really want to spend
the money for an online system or to convert the card catalog.

Any ideas would be welcome.

[ha-Safran]: Ramaz

2007-11-11 Thread Paula Sandfelder
To the Ramaz librarians.

I had a friend ask me if RAMAZ school is named for someone (and if so
who) or is it an acronym like Rambam or Ramban for a particular
rabbi? I said I'd ask.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Defining what is Jewish

2005-02-17 Thread Paula Sandfelder
A Jew for Jesus, Messianic Jew or Hebrew Christian are all names for
Christian sects. They are Evangelical Christians whose mission is to
convert Jews to Christianity. I understand that in most of these
congregations the majority of the members never were Jews. (The Rabbi
always has a very Jewish name.) They are supported financially by Southern
Baptist Churches, Assmblies of God Churches and other groups as part of
their missions programs. Several years ago I had an issue with our local
newspaper who listed them as Jewish Congregations rather than under
Christian Congregations. They always have big ads several weeks befor
Rosh Hashanah offering Free Tickets for the High Holidays. They tend to
prey on seniors, Russian immigrants, college students and others whose
knowledge of Judaism is minimal and their pocketbooks slim. Watch out for
this in your local papers come the fall.

[ha-Safran]: UTT Firebombing

2004-04-16 Thread Paula Sandfelder
Friends,

Did I miss something? I don't remember seeing anything in the newspaper or
on any of the news programs on TV regarding the firebombing of the UTT
Library. They seem to report every little incident, no matter how minor,
in Israel, but as far as I can tell never mentioned this hate crime in
Montreal. Were it not for Hasafran I would never know it happened.

[Ha-Safran] Information business

2003-10-03 Thread Paula Sandfelder
The current discussion reminds of a comment my brother made when I started
library school: Why do you need a master's degree to put the date stamp in
a book? I think most of the public doesn't have clue what it is we
actually do and we don't do a particularly good job in explaining it.

Emory's program was called Library and Information Management and that
is how I try to see myself in my current role as a reference librarian -
managing the dispersal of various kinds of information in a library setting.
