Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish Book Month

2007-04-11 Thread yoel sheridan
Dear Heather

There are many books on Jewish themes that do not get the promotion
or distribution that they deserve because they are published on
limited budgets by small publishers or by self-publication. Jewish
Libraries should encourage such publishers and writers by drawing
attention to those books, many of which are worthy of a wider
audience. What better place to start than to allocate a section to
lesser known books and invite recommendations. A classic example of
one such neglected book was Henry Roth's Call it Sleep which has
since been regarded as one of the greatest American novels of the
twentieth century.

[ha-Safran]: Blackberries and Yom Kippur

2006-09-29 Thread yoel sheridan
In the year 1940, many children were evacuated from their homes in
the major towns of Britain to escape the impending bombing onslaught
of the Nazi German Luftwaffe. Among them were many Jewish children
who found themselves having to find ways to maintain their Jewish
culture within a Christian environment. In these Days of Awe, I
thought you might like to see that it could be done, as is
demonstrated by this light-hearted story extracted from my book From
Here to Obscurity

That autumn, the blackberries grew with profusion in the countryside
hedgerows. Yulus has always, ever since that year, associated
blackberries with Yom Kippur, the Jewish fast day that lasts
twenty-five hours from dusk of one day until after dark of the next.
Pre-Barmitzvah boys are under no obligation to fast, but their
virility was often measured by the length of time they could maintain
the fast. Hail to those who could fast for the whole period, no easy
task for a twelve year-old. Yulus was determined to pass the test. He
explained the importance of this day in the Jewish calendar to the
grandmother. All Jews fast on this day, he said. It was good for the
soul. He asked her to provide him with an early supper that night.
She willingly complied with his request, not really believing that
this plump short-trousered boy with socks falling about his ankles,
would, or could go without food for such a long period even though it
was good for the soul. That evening, when he returned home after the
Yom Kippur eve Kol Nidre religious service in the Conservative Club
Hall that was serving as a Synagogue, she offered him his usual hot
cocoa drink. He politely refused, not tonight thank you, he said as
he went upstairs to bed. Next morning he also refused breakfast.
What, no breakfast? she exclaimed as he left the house for the
Synagogue, but you will be home for lunch? Again he explained that
the fast would last until dark that day. It doesn't seem right, she
said, for a young boy to go without food or drink for such a long
time. If that's his religion, said the grandfather, you should not
interfere. Still, she said, twenty five hours is a long, long time.
She was truly concerned and had visions of the boy collapsing in the
street with all the other evacuees and being carted off to hospital.
And then people would think the village hadn't been feeding the boys
properly. Twenty-five hours without food, she kept repeating, nodding
her head in disbelief.

After the morning service, the boys had free time before the combined
afternoon and evening religious services began. They ventured out
into the countryside. The sun was shining brightly even though autumn
was in the air. The blackberries were as ripe as they would ever be.
By the next day they would be overripe. Those deep, deep purple
berries cried out to be eaten. This temptation of Satan had to be
resisted, and yet.. The boys went into a huddled conference and
came out with a decision. The blackberries could be picked, but not
eaten until the fast was over. A basket was collected from one of the
billets and soon filled to capacity. No-one, on his absolute honour,
ate one berry. Not one even licked the purple juice from his fingers.
They marched back to the Conservative Club and placed the basket in a
vacant room, out of sight, although hardly out of mind. When the
final religious service was over and darkness had fallen, the boys
purchased a loaf of bread, sliced it and broke their fast with the
most delicious blackberry sandwiches ever, ever tasted.

You must be starving, said the grandmother, when Yulus arrived home.
Not really, he said, with the tell-tale purple signs of blackberry
juice that he had omitted to wipe away, still visible around the
edges of his mouth. I did it, he exclaimed triumphantly. I fasted for
the whole twenty-five hours! I never thought it was possible, said
the grandmother as she served Yulus with a hot supper. That's real
food, she said relieved to find him still on his two feet. I expected
you to be carried home, she said with a measure of awe at the power
of religious practice and the resilience of the young.

I wish you and your family and all Safranim, a happy, healthy and
peaceful year.

[ha-Safran]: Censorship

2006-05-21 Thread yoel sheridan
Much of the dispute regarding censorship seems to emanate from the
word itself. As rich as is the English language, it nevertheless
fails from time to time to provide an accurate word for the
occasion. Censorship is one such word.

There is an old Jewish anecdote about a judge presiding over a case
where divorced parents argue as to who should have custody of their
child. The mother explains at length why she should have custody and
the judge says You are right. The father then explains why he
should have custody of the child and the judge says to him You are
right. The clerk to the court then intervenes and tells the judge
that he cannot say that both sides are right, whereupon the judge
exclaims You are also right!

So it is with the censorship discussion so far.

The trouble arises from the wide definition of the word which can be
used equally for censoring for good and evil purposes. Most will
agree that censorship for the common good is acceptable, although
many would dispute what is for the common good.

Different words need to be found to describe more accurately the many
forms of censorship in existence. Who will take up the challenge?

Plato used the word in the following context

And shall we just carelessly allow children to hear any casual tales
which may be devised by casual persons, and to receive into their
minds ideas for the most part the very opposite of those which we
should wish them to have when they are grown up?

We cannot.

Then the first thing will be to establish a censorship of the writers
of fiction, and let the censors receive any tale of fiction which is
good, and reject the bad; and we will desire mothers and nurses to
tell their children the authorized ones only.

[ha-Safran]: Re: Children books and censorship

2006-03-16 Thread yoel sheridan
Dear Safranim,

Apropos Bernard Katz's hope that others will join in the discussion
with David and himself, (March 16,2006), I would like to make the
following points.

I have read the review and followed the discussion related to the
book Three Wishes: Palestinian and Israeli Children Speak from
which it seems to me that the book is not a children's book at all,
rather it is an ADULT book ABOUT children and NOT a book written FOR children.

I am rather surprised that no-one has suggested that the book should
be on the adult shelves of the library (under sociology?) where
hopefully better informed adult readers can perhaps ask themselves
and discuss with other adults, the questions that have arisen in the
debate between David Elazar in front-line Israel and Bernard Katz in
the comfort of North America, and then be in a better position to
answer questions of children relating to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

How on earth would a child who has grown up in the normal
atmosphere of an American home and school environment, understand, or
be expected to understand, ON THEIR OWN, the extreme emotional
reactions of children living under the daily threat of bombs tied
around the waists of teenagers or from ground-to-ground or
air-to-ground missiles?

As a child, I and my contemporaries, had the doubtful benefit of
growing up under the constant threat of German bombs on London in
WW2. We were never asked our opinion and were never encouraged to be
afraid, rather the terrible experience was treated as a challenge and
some even found the experience exciting. Today, children are asked
whether they are afraid and lo and behold, researchers discover
hidden traumas and nasty reactions to uncomfortable conditions. If
one asks a child a pointed question then one will get the desired
answer. If one sees young Palestinian children confronting armed
Israeli soldiers, does one see fear?

Books of the nature of Three Wishes: Palestinian and Israeli
Children Speak may well have their place in social studies, but need
to be read and understood within the context of conditions extant and
the precise nature and format of the questions asked. Are these
children's books?

[ha-Safran]: Holocaust Memorial Day

2006-01-30 Thread yoel sheridan
Dear Yossi

Last year you posted my poem on the Holocaust on the 60th anniversary
of the liberation of Auschwitz. Perhaps you will find it appropriate
to post it again today which is the International Holocaust Memorial Day.
This poem first appeared in my book From Here to Obscurity

The Holocaust

I was not there
And yet I was
We were not there
And yet we were

We, the lucky ones
Whose forbears flew the European nest
Before the black and blackened German eagle pounced

We were not there
But our Grandmothers were
And our grief and anger remain unabated
At the bestial manner in which they were humiliated

The atrocities echo across the nation and time
Reawakening the would-be deaf
Reopening the unhealed wounds
Reamplifying the unheard cries
Reinforcing the resolve to never ever
Endure such miseries again

Who said the Jews should suffer because they are Jews?
Or man should suffer for his views?
Was it God who has long forsaken mankind?
Or mankind that has forsaken God?

A thousand miles away
A thousand years away
The stench of the stinking Nazi cesspool
Will forever permeate the thinking Jewish soul

One need not be near the gas chambers
To smell the foul gas
One need not see the acrid smoke of the crematorium
To know it symbolises the Nazi German emporium

The universe, so the scientists say
Is dotted with black holes
Their energy draws into its very centre
All within its range

So with the Holocaust
It is the black hole of the Jewish collective soul
It draws and will continue to draw us in
For generations to come

The Jew knows in his heart
That the past will never pass
It is with us forever

Hi Amalia

Would you be referring to the following Welsh organization of farmers who
objected to high toll charges imposd in Wales in 1839? The protests were
referred to as the Rebecca Riots. British historians have the habit of
referring to protests of whatever nature against authority as riots

 Rebecca and her daughters
Between 1839 and 1844 the rural areas of South Wales were witness to
a unique phenomenon. At a time of growing discontent among the rural and
urban poor, who were under increasing pressure form the changes then
occurring, violent attacks on tollgates across the area became common. The
attackers wore women's clothing and claimed the identity of Rebecca and
her daughters as they smashed down the gates and terrorized the gatekeepers.

Re: [ha-Safran]: GOOGLE and anti-Semitism

2004-04-14 Thread yoel sheridan
   To all Google conscious Safranim

Fighting the anti-Semitic site by drawing attention to it and
unintentinally linking to it appears to be counterproductive.

A more sensible approach is to find and visit a pro-Jewish web site that
is more to your liking (there are plenty out there) and encourage others to
link to it, or visit it, as often as possible so that the Google algorythm
system will work favorably and so push the unmentionable anti-Semitic web
site from the top position.

However, let us all continue to fight against anti-Semitism in our own
way.

   Even though,
And I have been reliably told so,
   And this is not news,
There are more of them, than there are Jews!!

Re: [ha-Safran]: Films about Israeli and/or Jewish athletes

2004-03-14 Thread yoel sheridan
The manner of expression of English anti-Semitism changed dramatically in
1933 with the accession to power of Hitler in nazi Germany and the growth of
fascism in Britain. The passive, restrictive form gave way to intrusive and
violent anti-Semitic acts and the language returned to the open aggressive
mode of anti-Semitic expression more common in mid-eighteenth century
Britain.
The difference between pre-Hitler European and British anti-Semitic
language may be likened to the difference between a sharp stab (stoch) with
a knife and the surrepticious twist of a screwdriver.
The anti-Semitic language in the film Chariots of Fire may sound subtle
and polite to the foreign ear but, to both, the English Gentile and English
Jew, it was neither polite nor subtle.
Many people (including Americans) who understand english do not always
fully understand THE English, whose coded forms of expression are well
understood by the indigenous population for their real meanings.
(Coded language is not, of course, exclusive to the English and, as we all
know, the Americans and British are still divided by a common language)

   Dear Ann

A worthwhile addition to your list is the film and 1981 Oscar winner,
Chariots of Fire that deals with the 1924 Paris Olympics and the
competition between the Jewish athlete Harold Abrahams and the devout
Scottish Protestant Eric Liddell.
Incidentally, Harold Abrahams has also to jump a number of anti-Semitic
hurdles on his way to the Olympics.
I found details of the film on

[ha-Safran]: Cologne - when established

2003-12-04 Thread yoel sheridan
Someone wanted to know when the city of Cologne was established. The
following is an extract from the Catholic Encyclopedia:

The history of Cologne goes back to the first century before Christ. After
Marcus Agrippa transplanted the Ubii from the right to the left bank of the
Rhine (38 B.C.), Ara Ubiorum, the centre of the civil and religious life of
this tribe, occupied the site of the modern Cologne. In A.D. 50 Agrippina,
the daughter of Germanicus, founded here a colony of veterans called
Colonia Agrippina; the inhabitants of the two settlements mingled freely
with each other, while the Germans gradually assumed Roman customs. After
the revolt of the Batavians, Cologne was made the capital of a Roman
province and was repeatedly the residence of the imperial court

Note. The Ubii were a German tribe.

From Here to Obscurity

2003-11-05 Thread yoel sheridan
When I wrote that my book
From Here to Obscurity (ISBN 0-9540811-0-2)
was now available in the USA from
McBooks, 4450 Poe Road, Medina, OH 44256 USA
Phone: 330-725-0402 Fax: 330-722-2439, I inadvertently omitted their e mail
address which is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The book, which is about the life and times and demise of the
Yiddish-speaking Jews of the East End of London in the period 1933 to 1945,
has universal appeal as indicated in the review that appeared in the
Jerusalem Post under the heading A London Jewish world that is no more by
Alexander Zvielli.

This is a well-executed historical novel about London's Jewish East End,
covering the 1933-1945 period..Sheridan is successful in portraying the
character types that we could just as easily find in Lodz or the Lower East
Side of New York... From Here to Obscurity is a historically perceptive
and exciting chronicle that gives us a moving fusion of history and
literature. Local author Yoel Sheridan does a good job of bringing us the
ambiance, lifestyle and nostalgic humor of London's East End. Indeed, I
found the historical descriptions absorbing.

[ha-Safran]: From Here to Obscurity

2003-11-03 Thread yoel sheridan
I would like you all to know that my book From Here to Obscurity is now
available in the USA from

McBooks, 4450 Poe Road, Medina, OH 44256 USA
Phone: 330-725-0402 Fax: 330-722-2439

The book deals with the now lost Yiddish-speaking 100,000 strong Jewish
community of the East End of London, England, in the period 1933 to 1945.
It is not widely known that this vibrant Jewish community was not outside
the orbit of Nazi terror and that it was forced to disperse by the targeted
bombing of the German Luftwaffe in WW2.

The book has received excellent reviews from the Jewish press in England,
Israel and New Zealand.
