Every year we begin our Yom HaShoah program with a candle lighting ceremony where students light candles in honor or in memory of relatives who were in the Shoah. We preface the ceremony with a reading related to memory, hope or survival. We are looking for a new reading - does anyone have any suggestions? It need only be a paragraph but one that will help set the mood for high school students. A teacher remembers a TV miniseries from the 1970s on the Warsaw Ghetto. It is not the video Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Does this sound familiar to anyone? [ha-Safran]: The Vilna Gaon nd the eye
I have a high school student who is researching the eye. He heard somewhere that the Vilna Gaon said that since the Hebrew word for eye is ayin there are seventy nerves, veins and/or muscles in the eye. He is trying to find out if this is true. Has anyone used programs, to teach Hebrew, such as Rosetta Stone; language learning success? This comes in an online version as well as on a CD. I had posted, asking for the source of the saying that a person dies when he uses up all his words or when he runs out of steps. Since so many of you asked for the response, this is what I received - It is found in Sefer Chasidim, the edition published by Mossad HaRav Kook, paragraph 162. Also in the Mekitzai Nirdamim edition, page 13. Additionally, as some of you mentioned, there is a mention of using up one's allotment of words in one's lifetime in the short story Tehilla by S.Y. This is a Mikraot-Gedolot type of set with various perushim, like Rashi, as well as the Zohar and perushim in Yiddish. Sefer Devarim, published in Vilna in 1879. The print in all these volumes is clear but the pages are yellowed and somewhat crumbly; the binding is not good.
