[ha-Safran]: Article

2011-10-30 Thread Chaya Wiesman
Dear Safranim,

One of my students is looking for a SCHOLARLY article about the
causes of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. I was able
to find one article about this topic but have not been able to find
another that meets the criteria.

She already has books but the assignment calls for 2 articles from a
scholarly source. They need to be in the English language. There
have been many articles written about the subject of the expulsion,
but very few are about the causes.

If anyone can supply such an article I would really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

f it is helpful, I beleive that the date of publication is:

This information was obtained from p. 112 of

2011-01-19 Thread Miller, Philip
Dear Chaya -

This is a stretch, so forgive this speculation, for I do not have the
tools at hand to carry out this research where I am.

I clearly remember from the mid- or late 1970s (for the HUC-NY was still
on West 68th Street), the NY Times ran an Op-Ed piece by Anne Roiphe on
being Jewish and loving Christmas. It sparked a firestorm of letters,
and if I am not mistaken, it led her to write another piece defending
her notion on Jewish identity.

My suggestion is to try the NY Times Index.

Best of luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Warmest best,

Phil

Dear Safranim,

I have a request for an article by Anne Roiphe called "On Being

The earliest I can access the NY Observer is 1999 and that is still too late.

For those of you whose libraries serve the general public as well as
your institution's, you may wish to peruse a recent article by mark
Lenker and Elizabeth Kocevar-Weidinger in the September 2010 (71:5)
issue of _College & Research Libraries_. The title is"Nonaffiliated
users in academic libraries: Using W.D. Ross's Ethical Pluralism to
make sense of the tough questions". I think the guidelines and
ever-changing considerations are well-worth reviewing. With
decreased budgets and cutting of staff, most libraries open to the
public face issues concerning not only computer use, but access to
reference services, circulation privileges, special collections, use
of meeting rooms, and interlibrary loan privileges. Of particular
note was the phenomenon of increased distance education programs and
the subsequent demand on library services wherever the students and
faculty reside.

Shalom,

I don't know if this will be of much help, but there is an essay

appears in Volume 3, pp. 1666-1695.
Oddly, there is no attribution of Scientific American as the source

perhaps that is a different version.
If you can't get hold of the Scientific American, maybe you can

[ha-Safran]: Article "Zionism" in the Encyclopedia of Race and Racism

2008-08-28 Thread Hayim Sheynin
Safranim,

After reading the article thanks to S. Bernstein
I like to express solidarity with all the critiques
published on Hasafran.
I will not dwell on the long history of the way to
to the national homeland.
Instead I'll tell my own experiences that reject
many of the anti-Jewish ideas of the article.
I lived in Israel from 1972 to 1979 and taught in
Haifa University. 45% of my students were Arabs
and Druzes. There were no restrictions to their
admissions, even they as a rule had a much
lower school preparation than Jewish students.
I befriended some of my students and visited
some of their villages near Haifa and Tabor mountain.
Among the Arab students were some that
either belong to anti-Israeli organizations or
just had anti-Israeli feelings. Many of them
changed their opinions during the 70s.
As an example I can bring the Arab and Hebrew poet
Naim Araida (or Araidi), who from pro-PLO man
became pro-Zionist. He was my student for couple of years.
The problem was not only with Arabs, but also with
Israeli left, which supported anti-Israeli Arabs and
provoked them for anti-Israeli activities.
The author of the article "Zionism" in his references
brings works of only anti-Israeli Arabs and leftist
historians-revisionists.
This article like all the writings of the "post-Zionist"
historians is harmful to state of Israel and to Jewish
world and should be dealt as a propagandist literature
similar to the Protocalls of Elders of Zion.

[ha-Safran]: Article on future of JNUL in Ha'aretz

2007-11-05 Thread Zachary Baker
Colleagues,

The November 2 issue of Ha'aretz includes an article concerning the
future of the Jewish National and University Library, in Jerusalem -
about which our Israeli colleagues have briefed us as conventions past.
 From the article:

New chapter in a sad saga
By Aryeh Dayan

A few weeks from now, a Knesset vote will bring the curtain down on
an 11-year legal and political saga, in the course of which the State
of Israel nearly lost a unique opportunity to preserve something of
its culture. If the National Library Law passes its second and third
readings, it will mark the end of the first chapter in a melodrama
starring a huge donation, a legislative proposal, power struggles
between the Knesset and the government, and a treasure trove of
Hebrew and Jewish culture. The second chapter will end a few years
hence, with the completion of a splendid new building somewhere
between the Supreme Court and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem -
the new home of Israel's national library.

Mazel tov to Lisa Silverman for an excellent article called "Bearing
Witness Through Picture Books" in the March 1, 2007 issue of School
Library Journal,
http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6420400.html
After a cogent introduction, it consists of a bibliography of recent
illustrated books about the Holocaust, plus some videos and websites.
Children's books of Jewish content need the exposure that articles
like Lisa's give them and perhaps, among its benefits, it will
inspire more Judaic librarians to publish in the secular (as well as
Jewish) children's literature media.

2006-03-07 Thread Zachary Baker
Safranim,

The March 3 issue of Ha'aretz has an article on the Jewish National
and University Library, "A Problem Shelved Too Often," by Benny Mer:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=689870.

In addition to providing historical background, the article discusses
ongoing efforts to separate the JNUL from the Hebrew University and
transform it into a national library "tout court." These efforts are
being encouraged by the Rothschild family's Yad Hanadiv
Foundation. The article includes segments of an interview with
Rosalind Duke, acting director and head librarian of the JNUL. Those
who attended the 2003 AJL convention in Toronto may remember
Rosalind's presentation regarding the JNUL.

and Paola F. Munafo, with the assistance of Daniela Costantini. Palermo:

Maria Grandinette, Head of Conservation Treatment in the Stanford

Mr. Pickwoad's experience as a paper conservator working on Hebrew books in

2005-01-06 Thread Andrea Rapp
THank you so much for posting the article about the
non-coverage of Israel's tsunami aid and other
information.
People so often blame Israel for incompetent PR
efforts, but with the largest foreign press corps per
capita of any country, Israel is clearly (to me) not
the responsible party for the coverage or lack thereof
that it gets. I remember when the Israeli government
called a press conference to display the tens of
millions of smuggled weapons aboard the Karin A
weapons ship. The press simply wasn't interested in
reporting that someone was obviously preparing for a
very big war - and it wasn't Israel.

[ha-Safran]: Article

2005-01-05 Thread RITA ALLEN
It often happens that an article appearing on the HaSafran web-site is
something that I will forward to my Rabbi, since this is a source that is
unfamiliar to him. Now I've received, from another source, a very
interesting article, which I am forwarding to HaSafran.

BRITISH ISRAEL GROUP: Articles of the week - 31 December 2004

Jewish World Review Dec. 30, 2004 / 18 Teves, 5764
The U.N's politics of humanitarianism By RACHEL RASKIN-ZRIHEN

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com |
You're unlikely to learn this in
the world's newspapers, but Israel was among the first nations to offer
help to those affected by last week's terrible disaster in south Asia.
It sent doctors, supplies and set aside $100,000 for each nation hit
by the recent tsunamis, according to reports in the Jewish Telegraph Agency
(JTA). This wouldn't be such a big deal, except that reports of nations
offering help released by the United Nations and printed in newspapers
worldwide, don't include it. They do, however, include the donations several
other countries whose contribution were as much or less. One report lists
donations of personnel and material separately. Israel, which sent
four top doctors from its Hadassah Hospital (including its head of general
surgery and trauma, its chief of pediatrics and two anesthesiologists,) to
Sri Lanka, the JTA reports, was not mentioned.
You may not know that the American Jewish World Service expected to
send its first shipment of medicine Tuesday to Sri Lanka, Indonesia and
India. The JTA reports the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is
working with its office in Bombay and elsewhere to coordinate efforts to
provide food, water, clothing and shelter to affected countries. B'nai B'rith
is accepting donations to help victims, and an Orthodox outreach group in
Thailand also responded to the crisis. It dispatched a rabbi to Phuket
to aid rescue efforts, and turned three of their Thailand outposts into
crisis centers where survivors can call home, have a free meal or receive
funds for new clothing and medical help.
You also might not learn, unless you searched the information out like
I did, that there were perhaps 200 Jewish victims of the disaster still
missing as of Tuesday, according to Israel's Foreign Ministry, which
told the JTA that at least 33 Israelis are receiving treatment in hospitals
in the region. I've read about the terrible losses suffered in this
disaster by citizens of many other nations, but not a word about these
people, which include a Belgian Jewish couple whose 11 month old son was
reportedly ripped from their arms and drowned.
In the same issue Tuesday, the JTA reported about a couple of Israeli
scientists making a breakthrough in the treatment of AIDS, which
follows closely on the heals of the two Israeli scientists recently awarded
the Nobel Prize for their breakthrough in cancer treatment. But that's
another story you're not likely to read much of in the mainstream press.
Maybe I'm paranoid, but I can't think of an innocent explanation for
the omission of Israel's contributions to this and other humanitarian
efforts worldwide by the UN and the world's main media outlets. I can't help
feeling it's a not-so-subtle attempt to isolate Israel and the Jewish
people from the world community, at least in print and therefore in
public opinion, even while Israel and many Jews go about the business of
behaving like human beings.
Not that they're doing what they do for recognition, but it's
enormously frustrating that this keeps happening. For instance, did you
know that Israel was the first country in the world, even before the United
States, to conduct a national moment of silence for the 9/11 victims? This
was done even as many Palestinians shouted, danced and handed out candy.
Maybe you didn't know about that, either.
The UN should just admit it despises the Jewish state and the Jewish
people, has no intention of ever recognizing anything positive either
ever does, and dispense with the pretense of fairness once and for all. But
dispelling the myth that Israel in particular and Jews in general are
the world's bad guys is imperative not just to combat growing worldwide
anti-Semitism, but also for Jews who might, if they rely on the
mainstream media for information, be starting to question themselves. Not to
worry ,though, the humanity of the people the former head of Malaysia
recently accused of "inventing" human rights remains intact, no matter what
you read or don't read in the paper.

[ha-Safran]: Article by Lee Kaplan

2004-08-19 Thread Eli Wise
I was very curious to see the suggested link for the article by Lee Kaplan.
These issues has been discussed on Hasafran many times. It is a well known
fact that SRRT, ALA, and others are using professional venues to spread
hatred of Israel. I myself was on a local talk show in Philadelphia during
ALA meetings in January 2003 to outline the history and response to the
Palestinian libraries resolution of 2002. How many times will the
anti-Israel lobby in ALA continue to spread venom and hatred with distortion
to the professional library world without AJL taking a public stand. Even
the response by AJL to the day school bombing in Montreal before Pesach was
minimal. Kaplan outlines the numerous times ALA and its colleagues promote
damaging philosophies, defend terrorists as oppressed minorities, and the
like. AJL needs to be more definitive about its positions and stands
regarding Israel concerns. If AJL does not protest the image of Israel may
be so distorted that it might be too late to protest.

Terrorism as a tool for political purposes is murder and kills innocent
people. If anyone defends such people and their actions through
philosophical concerns and misplaced sympathy they are giving the terrorists
tacit approval of their actions. Does AJL have to wait until one of its
members institutions are bombed to react. What people perceive as
anti-Zionist or anti-Israel is just a veiled version of anti-Semitism. In
America we have a right to have our opinions heard. I can't understand why
AJL doesn't speak up more than it does. That is why I amazed that this
article was suggested to the membership.

THE SHUL LIBRARIAN
Shelli Liebman Dorfman, Staff Writer
The Detroit Jewish News, June 18, 2004

Next week, when the membership of the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL)
assembles at its annual convention in New York, a heartfelt tribute will be
read in honor of Mae Weine. Mrs. Weine of Oak Park, a former national
president of the organization who attended almost every convention for the
past 40 years, died June 5, 2004, at age 92. Mrs. Weine, a member of
Congregation Beth Shalom, was a synagogue librarian at Congregation Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses (now Beth Ahm) for many years. "She didn't resign from
her work there until she was 90," said daughter Judith Sinnott of Allen Park.

"Mae was passionate about educating Judaica librarians-in-training," reads
the tribute, written by Barbara Leff, past president of the New York-based
AJL, and Ronda Rose, AJL president-elect. "She was a warm, outgoing woman,
who worked tirelessly for the association." Mrs. Weine was one of the AJL
founders and helped form chapters in Philadelphia, Southern California and
Detroit. She also taught workshops and wrote articles and publications to
promote library standards.

"I was always amazed by her energy, her passion, her knowledge and her
commitment to the profession," said Rachel Erlich Kamin, director of Temple
Israel Libraries and Media Center in West Bloomfield and immediate past
president of AJL's Michigan Chapter. A professional highlight for Mrs.
Weine was her creation of the Weine Classification System for Judaica
Collections. "It is one of two classification systems that is used in
countless Jewish libraries all over the world," Kamin said. "The Weine
Classification scheme was the first one to address Judaic cataloging in the
smaller Judaica library, such as a school or synagogue," Ronda Rose said.

But far before her years as a librarian, Mrs. Weine was a wife and mother.
"She had a master's degree in library science from Drexel University in
Philadelphia, but she didn't get it until her kids were teenagers," said
daughter Judith. "But she was always a lover of books and literature. All
she ever did was read. When we were kids, she informally ran the library at
Beth Israel Congregation in Camden, N.J., where my dad was rabbi."

Family and holidays were central to Mrs. Weine. "She was an ultra-loyal
family person and the personal glue that held the family together," Judith
said. "And she was always the one to organize holiday gatherings, like the
family seder at Beth Shalom." With as much acclaim as she had received
professionally, Judith said, "she wasn't interested in being in the
limelight. She was very retiring, modest and unpretentious," she said.

At Mrs. Weine's funeral, her niece Reva Barahal of Southfield read a letter
from Maureen Reister, an AJL member from Dallas. Reister recounted Mrs.
Weine's warm, friendly welcome when she was a newcomer to the association.
"I was new to Judaica librarianship and had no idea how famous Mae was --
what she and her work meant to the library world," she wrote. "It was a
privilege to know the woman who wrote the brilliant classification scheme,
a wonderful gift to the Jewish library world."

Mrs. Weine was an active member of the national AJL and the group's
Michigan Chapter. Well into her 80s, Mrs. Weine continued to travel to
conventions, meetings and events. "Even with her extensive experience in
the field, she felt that she could still learn from her colleagues," Kamin
said. "And, of course, we all learned so much from her."

Mae Weine is survived by her son, Daniel Weine of Georgia; daughter and
son-in-law, Judith and Michael Sinnott of Allen Park; sister, Grace
Friedman of Los Angeles; granddaughter, Deborah and Shimon Nakar of Ramat
Bet Shemesh, Israel; great-grandchildren, Ta'ir Nakar, Tamar Nakar, Shira
Nakar, Yedidiah Nakar, Natan Nakar, Brandon Sinnott, Christian
Sinnott. She was the beloved wife of the late Rabbi Max Weine; dear
mother-in-law of the late Florence Weine. Interment was at Machpelah
Cemetery. Contributions may be made to a Jewish charity of one's choice or
Beaumont Hospice. Arrangements by Hebrew Memorial Chapel.

[ha-Safran]: Article on Musikah mizrahit in Ma'ariv

2004-01-14 Thread Yossi Galron
Safranim,

A patron is looking of an article that was probably published in Ma'ariv
(Israeli daily newspaper) in June 1991

The following is an English excerpt from the paper, but she does not have
an exact citation (date, pages, etc.)

"The article is actually a general one that deals with why people in
neighborhoods like shekhunah dalet and kiryat ata ---don't speak "good"
Hebrew and commenting on the "Turkish, Turkish" trend in Mizrahi music. I
can give you a couple of alleged quotes from the article in English ---

The Neighborhood Abandoned Hebrew

"There is no more insulting definition than the connection between a Greek
tone and the spice of an oud, between the North African curl and Nomi Shemer
's Hebrew. So it's all over. There is no continuation of the Mediterranean
experiment. The market only buys heavy Arabic, or Turkish Turkish. They want
Arab stuff not Greek Hebrew. The public's request climaxes in Ofer Levi and
Zahava Ben. These are the two making business boil. It is from the Be'er
Sheva quarter, which is the Kiryat Ata quarter [also a poor industrial
neighborhood]. Take the history of the twenty-one years that she has been
living, and understand what the Shkunat Dalet (The "D" neighborhood where
Zehava Ben grew up) is and why they don't speak Hebrew there.
Tsror, Rino. The neighborhood abandoned Hebrew, Maariv sof ha shavua
(end of the week). June 1991. This is a weekend supplement that did not list
page numbers.
Can someone identify it?

Thank you,

Shalom,

Jeff Corbett asked about an article entitled "A Piece of Liver." From the
brief description, I was reminded of a series articles that appeared years ago
in the English edition of the Yated Ne'eman newspaper, by an English author
named Tuvia Cohen. The general format of the series was to use a description of
some aspect of nature to stimulate our appreciation of the wonders of HaShem's
world. Sort of a frum Isaac Asimov. The essays were well written in a very
clear, conversational style.

As it happens, many of the articles were published in a book, entitlted
"Designer World", with a Hebrew subtitle "Niflaot ha-Bore". Tuvia Cohen was a
pseudonym for Rabbi Avrohom Katz. It was published in 1994 by :

England

It contains haskamot (approbations) from the late Gateshead Rav, Bezalel Rakow,
Rav Matisyahu Solomon, and the late Rav Mordechai Miller.

The essay you are looking for is on pages 14-19. If you can't locate it in your
area, or through Inter-Library Loan, I could send you a photocopy (the book is
from my family's collection; I haven't checked whether is is found in the
catalogs of Israeli university libraries, or anywhere else.)

[Ha-Safran] Article Search

2003-10-28 Thread Jeff Corbett
Hello.

A patron asked me to find an article. I was not given a proper citation. The
title is "A Piece of Liver." Possibly it appeared in an England periodical
or by an English author. The article describes that the human liver is a
wondrous organ that rivals any man made chemical factory. The article
begins:

If you take the train from Gateshead to London, you are travelling
southwards. Ten minutes after the journey has begun, look out the window on
the left-hand side, and you will see a chemical factory.

If anyone has a pdf of this article or a link to it online, please let me
know.

Thanks.

Jeff
