Re: [ha-Safran]: Maggie Anton (Rashi's Daughters)

2010-02-09 Thread Liz Edelglass
I missed the query about Maggie Anton, but I can say that we brought
her to New Haven in the fall as part of our Jewish Book Festival. I
thought she was fantastic. She spoke entirely without notes --
taught Talmud and history and also discussed her novels and the
writing process. She was a hit with both men and women, although I
would especially recommend advertising her to groups of women and
even teens, as she exemplifies a strong, smart, educated woman.
(plus, we sold a lot of books, in a community that doesn't always buy books!)

2010-02-09 Thread Chaya Wiesman
Another series of books with insight into Jewish life- and
Jewish/Christian relations in Medieval Europe (mostly France but also
England and Scotland) is a series of books by Sharan Newman - The
Catherine LeVendeur series. Currently there are 9 books in the series.
The author is a series historian and has written non-fiction historical
works as well. I recommend them highly. They also do not have the
salacious details that bothered Melinda in the Rashi's Daughters series.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Maggie Anton (Rashi's Daughters)

2010-02-08 Thread library
It sounds like a fascinating presentation. Anton's books provide rich
details of Medieval Jewish life.

If you enjoyed reading about Jewish life in Medieval Europe, I highly
recommend Michelle Cameron's new book, The Fruit of Her Hands: The
Story of Shira of Ashkenaz. Cameron based her historical novel on
her research about her own ancestor, Rabbi Meir Ben Baruch,
imaginatively developing the character of the rabbi's wife to provide
insight into Jewish life in 13th century France, Germany, and England.

Compared with Anton's work, Cameron created more rounded characters,
without any of the salacious details that had bothered me in some
sections of the three volumes of Rashi's Daughters.

Just an added note, Michelle was a speaker at our temple and she was
wonderful. The book has been a big hit with our congregants.

[ha-Safran]: Maggie Anton (Rashi's Daughters)

2010-02-05 Thread Andrea Rapp
She spoke here in Cincinnati Thursday evening, and I found her
presentation enchanting.
Lots of humor and I learned a lot--about Talmud and about Jewish life
in Europe before the Crusades, especially the surprising status of
Jewish women.
She went a bit longer than other speakers, but the audience
really enjoyed her.
