outstanding video cassette collection - for sale? for conversion?Peggy,

I have converted a few and it an easy process. You can buy a DVD/VHS converter
for under $300. Put a blank disk in one side and your VHS in the other. Push
one button and wait the time it would take to play the movie. Finalize the DVD
from the menu and you are done.

We are disbanding our outstanding collection of about 300 films of Jewish
interest on video cassette. Does anyone have constructive suggestions on this?
Is this sellable? Would any of you be interested in the whole collection or
individual videos?

Have any of you converted videocassettes to dvd? If so, what was your

Re: [ha-Safran] outstanding video cassette collection - for sale?forconversion?

2011-12-22 Thread Andrea Rapp
All,
My understanding (from actually writing to publishers a number of years ago) is
that it violates copyright to transfer from one medium to another.  I gather
tha,( like photocopying and distributing copies to students), this is something
that many, many people do anyway.  There is a mistaken belief that as long as
you don't profit from copying distributing, copyright goes out the window.
We've had copyright attorneys addressthese issues at some AJL conventions,
and I think people are always disappointed to learn the facts about home use,
fair use, etc.
On the other hand,  it's been a while since I've explored the issue.

I think it's one thing to convert your home videos to dvd.

Another to do so with commercial products.

Also home use vs. public use may come into play..

I would not convert our library's VHS collection to DVD
without approval/assurance from a copyright attorney, at least.

[ha-Safran] Concerning copy right issues with link

2011-12-22 Thread Schoen Books
I asked our son Seth Schoen who works for the Electronic Frontier
Foundation to comment
and his Cornell link at the bottom concerning library
exceptions will be useful to look at:

I would recommend that they contact the library of a larger nearby
research university (e.g. NYU or Columbia in New York). Most of the
huge well-funded universities have copyright specialists working in
their libraries who can probably offer helpful advice; their goal is
to allow researchers and librarians to do as much as possible without
getting the university in legal trouble.

Also, library associations like ALA and SLA have copyright committees
and produce publications to help their member librarians deal with
copyright issues.

There are specific copyright exceptions and limitations related to
preservation activities and to archival work by non-profit libraries
and archives, but those almost never come up at EFF so I'm not very
familiar with the details. This is totally separate from fair use,
which is a different reason why a use might not be an infringement of
copyright.

The main provision related to library exceptions is 17 USC 108, at
