Re: [ha-Safran] EJ 2nd edition

2012-07-23 Thread Aileen Grossberg
I bought EJ2 when it first came out. It was a stretch for my very small
donations only budget. Was it worth it? Probably not. Patrons haven't used the
set extensively. Frequently we refer to EJ1 also especially for illustrative
material. If you have a very active library, the purchase may make sense
especially if you have online access also but for a small , not too busy
library, save your money (until the deal is a real bargain), use the internet
and the earlier edition.

Collective wisdom (I really do love how that describes this group),

I just received an e-mail offering the 2nd edition of Encyclopedia
Judaica for $995. Clearly a bargain over the list price. My question
is to those of you who purchased this, especially synagogue
libraries. Do you feel that it's been a worthwhile purchase? Would
you recommend buying it?

Thanks in advance,
Amy Graham

[ha-Safran] Card catalog drawers

Any creative ideas for what to do with the drawers from a card catalog?
I once heard of using them for planters, as gifts to staff, but I can't
picture that.

 Colleagues:

I catalog at the Sosnick Library, Temple B'nai Israel, Sacramento, CA.

I expressed my disappointment as a cataloger at the fact that the new
cataloging code, RDA (Resource Description Access), clings to the
Christianity-centric way of expressing time, i.e. BC and AD, instead of
swapping to the religion-neutral BCE/CE. I was told that the RDA
 committee
considered going that way but decided the BCE/CE practice was still not
 common enough to be adopted.

I've lodged a complaint with RDA Toolkit Help. It seems high time to me
 to
 use terms that don't offend.

Hello, Andrea!

Sorry to correct you, but the C in CE/BCE does not stand for Christ or
Christian, but rather Common, i.e.

Before the Common Era (BCE)
Common Era (CE)

The terminology here is entirely religion-neutral, which is why I think RDA
should make use of it. (My conspiratorial way of thinking inclines me to
think that maybe some fundamentalist Christians said no, but of course I
have no way of proving that. ;-))

Re: [ha-Safran] Ce and BCE

2012-07-23 Thread Andrea Rapp
Buzz, I know that the C in CE and BCE stands for the word common. My point
is that the BCE terminology still dates from--what event?  Thecommon
era--let's face it--begins with whose (supposed) year of birth?  So I don't
think it's religion neutral at all; it's built around the birth of Jesus.
