[ha-Safran] Curators' Conference at the National Library

2012-07-25 Thread Daniel Scheide
Last month, there was a conference at the National Library of Israel,
'Curating and Cultural Exchange'. I know that many of us who did not attend
(including myself) were interested in what was discussed. The National

Admittedly, CE/BCE is built on Christian terms, but I think they are still
more religion-neutral than the previous practice of using BC and AD.

The alternative would be to use years as constructed by Orthodox Jews.
These would not be understandable by any outside of that community. Plus,
they would not agree with the Muslim understanding of time. From what I can
reckon, the use of the commonly-understood numbers for time plus CE or BCE
is the most religion-neutral way of describing time.

It appears I have already lost this bet with RDA, so this is probably
whistling in the wind. ;-)

[ha-Safran] Is there a Jewish equivalent to "Christian Fiction?"

2012-07-25 Thread debby...@aol.com

Dear Safranim,

Besides my volunteer job in my synagogue library I am employed in a public
library shelving books. One of the librarians in the public library asked if
there is a Jewish equivalent to the genre of "Christian Fiction." The hope is
to balance the collection with Jewish and Moslem fiction that is along the same
lines as the Christian fiction.

About Christian Fiction from Wikipedia - "Deborah Bryan of the Kansas Library
Association suggests that a Christian fiction writer must comply with certain
restraints such as: (1) Accept the truthful authority of the Bible (2) Address
dilemmas through faith in Jesus (3) Believe that Jesus died and rose for sins
of all people (4) A writer is restricted from writing about certain
“taboos.”[8]. She also suggests that this genre of books typically promotes
values, teaches a lesson, always has a happy ending (good prevails over evil in
all books), adheres to a decency code (certain boundaries such as sexuality,
strong language, and topics of such cannot be crossed)..."

Some authors who write in this genre are Janette Oke, Karen Kingsbury, Judith
McCoy Miller, Tracie Peterson, Bethany Kennedy Scanlon, Tosca Lee and Robert
Whitlow.

Does Judaism have anything comparable to Christian Fiction?

Thank you so much.

[ha-Safran] Greetings from the new AJL president

2012-07-25 Thread Heidi Estrin
Shalom! On June 20, 2012 at our annual conference in beautiful Pasadena, CA, I
was installed as the 26th President of the Association of Jewish Libraries. I
am honored to have the opportunity to serve as President for an organization
comprised of professional and intelligent people, who are so passionate about
their field.

My own journey with AJL began when I moved from the youth services department
of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh to take over the Feldman Children's
Library at Congregation B'nai Israel of Boca Raton, a large Reform synagogue in
South Florida. I was immediately drafted to help with the 1999 AJL Convention
in Boca Raton. Having been thrown into the deep end, I quickly got to know the
people and the organization. I've stayed involved ever since, serving as
President of the South Florida AJL Chapter, and as Chair of the Mentoring
Committee, the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee, and the PR Committee.

During my two years as Vice President/President-Elect under President Jim
Rosenbloom, I've been impressed by his leadership and heartened by the
dedication shown by so many members of AJL who serve in so many ways. We are a
completely volunteer-run organization, and we rely on each and every one of
you! Whether you serve on a committee, help with conference arrangements, share
your knowledge on Hasafran, or spread the word about issues in Judaic
librarianship via social media, your actions add to AJL's vitality! I hope this
tradition continues, and I call on all of you who wish to contribute to the
strength and growth of AJL to contact me and join the conversation in any
capacity and expertise you can offer!

To that end, our new Vice President/President-Elect, Yaffa Weisman, will be
leading a Strategic Planning effort to help AJL adapt to the changes going on
in our profession and our world. We will be depending on your participation and
feedback to guide us in this process.

Thanks to Past President Jim Rosenbloom, the AJL Council, and to all of you for
your support. I look forward to my time as your President!

[ha-Safran] RDA NACO trainnig for Hebraica NACO contributers

2012-07-25 Thread Heidi G Lerner

Dear Hebrew NACO Funnel members/contributors and institutional Hebraica NACO
contributors,

As I reported earlier (email to Heb-NACO listserv March 30, 2012 ), PCC is
working to transition NACO participants into creating RDA authority records.
PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records is March 31, 2013 . What this means is
that access points used in all new RDA and AACR2 bibliographic records with
authentication code “pcc” must be supported by RDA authority records (
http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/rda/RDA%20FAQ.html ).

The Hebraica NACO Funnel made arrangements with the PCC Secretariat to offer
formal RDA NACO Training, to coordinate the required webinars that have been
prepared by the PCC Secretariat, and to supervise the mandatory review period
for our community. This initial training is only available for independent and
experienced NACO Hebraica catalogers. We have been assigned August- September
2012 . The webinars are freely available to NACO catalogers and you should
watch them during the training period (
http://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/courses/rda_naco/index.html ). Joan and I will
prepare some supplementary materials during this training period. We are also
working on a platform to be coordinated with the Heb-NACO listserv which will
serve as a forum for general RDA questions that will come up as all of us
transition into the new cataloging environment based on the RDA Toolkit.

The review period will follow roughly the same guidelines as when catalogers
underwent initial ‎ NACO training. Catalogers will submit all newly created
NARS to me for review. These will be looked at by both Joan and me; we will
send them back with our comments. When we think that an individual cataloger is
ready for a formal review, he or she will be notified. Joan and I both
underwent the NACO review that was required of all official RDA testers.

In the meantime I hope that you are getting yourselves familiar with the
Toolkit and other documentation that can be found at the PCC and other
websites. Please feel free to contact Joan and me with any questions that you
might have.

Sincerely,
Heidi Lerner (Coordinator, NACO Hebraica Funnel)

[ha-Safran] Is there a Jewish equivalent to Christian fiction

2012-07-25 Thread Libi Astaire
Novels published by Chareidi publishers such as Targum, Feldheim,
ArtScroll, Menucha Publishing, etc., do have a "decency code," such as the
one that was mentioned. They also express traditional Jewish values.

My Ezra Melamed Mystery series, for instance, which was originally
published by Targum Press, is a historical mystery series set in the early
1800s that was written from the perspective of London's Orthodox Jewish
community. (The first volume, *The Disappearing Dowry*, was a Sydney Taylor
Notable Book for Teens.) There's no sex, violence, foul language, etc., and
the books do have a happy ending - although whether that makes them
"Jewish" or "cozy" or just "historical" is apparently a matter of opinion,
since they're listed on all three types of websites.

But getting back to your question, you or the librarian could browse
through some of these Orthodox publishing companies' websites to see if any
of the fiction looks interesting/appropriate.

Be well,

[ha-Safran] Tisha B'Av Videos

2012-07-25 Thread Rebecca Levitan
I recently have had many parents and teachers coming into our library looking
for videos that are appropriate to show kids (anywhere from 6 years old and up)
on Tisha B'av. They're generally ok with Holocaust movies, but don't want
anything too scary, but also are interested in videos on Israel. In short,
something serious that reflects the mood of the day, but interesting enough to
keep kids entertained while parents/teachers fast.
I want to make sure I'm even more prepared for next year, does anyone have
suggestions of what might be good to add to my collection?

Thanks!

HI Aaron, please see answers below. I have cc'd Hasafran and Heb-Naco because
other catalogers might have similar questions. Best, Heidi

I assume your Hebrew-specific materials will be added to the website for
the benefit of those, like myself, who do some Hebrew but are not
primarily Hebraica catalogers. --Aaron

--We plan to put them up on the AJL wiki, and hopefully also in some form
eventuallyin  the RDA Toolkit--HGL

P.S. It might interest you that the AALL law cataloging committee is
drawing up a list of "best practices" covering all aspects of RDA that LC
practices leaves open to "cataloger judgement". You might want to do the
same thing for Hebrew.

--Joan and I are working on an RDA edition of Maher's *Hebraica Cataloging."
This too will appear on the AJL wiki and Cataloger's Desktop, in all
probability--HGL

P.P.S. Is that RDA NACO trainng for Hebrew only on authorities, or on
everything? If the former, you might want to produce some
H ebraica-specific materials which can be added to the website.

--Training provided by the Hebraica NACO Funnel will only relate to
authorities.  Any documentation that we develop will be mounted on the AJL Wiki
and elsewhere as appropriate--HGL

Re: [ha-Safran] Tisha B'Av Videos

2012-07-25 Thread Shira London
The best video about Israel that I have seen recently is the
documentary *Israel
Inside: How a Small Nation Makes a Big Difference*. It is appropriate for
middle school as well as adults. You could also show the video *The First
Israeli in Space: The Story of Ilan Ramon, Israel's First Astronaut*. One
popular Israeli film for middle school students is called *Giborim
Ketanim*(Little Heroes). It has English subtitles and our students
love it.
The series *Against All Odds: Israeli Survives* is a possibility, as
well. Finally, the film "Becoming the Voices," produced by Baltimore's
Center for Jewish Education, depicts students interviewing Holocaust
survivors who tell their stories.

Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish value of CE/BCE

2012-07-25 Thread Henry Hollander, Bookseller

Citing O. Pederson, wikipedia tells us (at the moment) that CE is
"The year numbering system used with Common Era notation was devised
by the Christian monk Dionysius
Exiguus in the year 525 to replace the Era of Martyrs
system, because he did not wish to continue the memory of a tyrant who
persecuted Christians.,"
so it is apparently really of Christian origin.

Despite that, I
want to offer a logic to support this numbering system from a Jewish point
of view. As Jews we use a numbering system based on a Medieval
extrapolation of the amount of time that has occurred since creation as
extrapolated from the Hebrew Bible. There are many culturally specific
numbering systems, Islam, the French Revolution and the Khmer Rouge among
others, launched new numbering systems. Particular to Jewish history is
the shift from Biblical Judaism to Rabbinic Judaism. This shift happened
in the same general (but broader) time frame as the life of the
historical/mythological Jesus. The rise of Rabbinical Judaism has certain
very specific moments of importance, particularly the Destruction of the
Temple and the redaction of the Mishnah. One could argue that the Judaism
that we practice today (regardless of movement) could easily be marked
from these dates just as well as from the moment of creation. The
Christians have chosen a date not that far off from the earlier of these
two dates.

We could insist that close is not good enough. Deborah Lipstadt rightly
points out that there are cases there can't be reasonable compromises.
However, in this case, where we are dealing with made up numbers and not
some actual fact, there is room for compromise. We can take Common Era to
mean the beginning of Rabbinic Judaism and let the Christians think of
Jesus. This is the essence of ecumenicalism I think. When Mashaich comes
we can all set our clocks by God's system, but until then...

All the best,
Henry

Re: [ha-Safran] Greetings from the new AJL president

2012-07-25 Thread Etta Gold
Thank you, Heidi -
a beautiful message - may the tradition continue :)

Subject: [ha-Safran] Greetings from the new AJL president

Shalom! On June 20, 2012 at our annual conference in beautiful Pasadena, CA,
I was installed as the 26th President of the Association of Jewish Libraries. I
am honored to have the opportunity to serve as President for an organization
comprised of professional and intelligent people, who are so passionate about
their field.

Thanks to Past President Jim Rosenbloom, the AJL Council, and to all of you
for your support. I look forward to my time as your President!
