Hi Helen:

Thank you for the two sites. I collect them all. BTW, if you click on images on
my Pinterest site, they link you to the originating site itself.

Unfortunately, books are treated not as a complex art object by itself
(content, binding, font, illustration, material its printed on, format, etc.).
In most instances, the books or magazines are used only for their physical
qualities - perhaps with exception of artists like Sue Blackwell re-creating
the scene from the Alice in Wonderland, or, Ragnhildur Jóhanns creating poetry
of his own out of cut-out words. Even Nicholas Jones and Brian Dettmer are
relating to the content of the books they create their art from.

Any other art or craft objects are using books as a mundane building material
(Dalhousie University students built a hut from unused telephone books, Liu Wei
built skyscrapers sculpture from old schoolbooks...). Madrid-based Alicia
Martin shows our attitude toward printed culture represented by books - among
others - by pouring them out the windows onto the streets. Is it an image of
information overflow? Disrespect for paper-based culture being surrounded by
digital-based one?

Other media are recycled or, upcycled, too. Have a look at the boards Crafts
(http://pinterest.com/terimm53/crafts/), Crafts - Textile, Jewelry and beading,
Mixed media or, Wood and steel art. Here are just a few: CDs, chips,
construction waste material, pencils, old Lego blocks, plastic shopping bags,
drift wood, plastic bottles, bottle caps, toys, clothes, are items that are
used and re-used again.

As a librarian I had to downsize the collections myself. Many of the items
ended on the landfill. If just a few end up as a new art form, it's for the
better. Concluding, the issue is complex. The louder the issue is voiced the
better. I think we are replacing a media that lasted for centuries for a media
that is still extremely fragile. But this is a point for another discussion.

Best wishes and happy HHs, Terezia Matus

Hello,
A cousin of mine sent the following message - if you can help, please let me
know. Thanks

The library at Beth Ahm (aka Beth Abraham) is in disrepair and we are looking
to downsize what we have in our inventory. We have many very old children's
books, some adult non fiction and loads of Jewish texts. We do not want to
just throw these away or discard anything that might be priceless or worthy of
keeping and we don't quite know where to turn. (Our librarian for years was
Mae Weine, who apparently has some fame in the Jewish library world..in
terms of her cataloging system??? We have her original card catalogue in our
library too. Our first response is to discard it, but this could be something
that might be appreciated by others and I would hate to destroy something of
value to Jewish librarians.

I have often donated surplus books, especially titles for children, with the
help of the URJ's (Union of Reform Judaism) Small Synagogue Group. Perhaps
Conservative and Orthodox synagogue organizations have a comparable
organization?

Here's the URJ contact for anyone interested in exploring this:

...and Marga's post touches on an issue that I have wondered about for
a long time, namely how we can best partner with PJ Library on an
Institutional level.

This discussion shifts my thinking a little... perhaps we might
advocate for a consultant on their Board to help them think
larger-picture strategically -- solicit a list of starting points from
our membership, such as that of maximizing the potential of the
gently-used books, and draft a letter. Start off with the closed SSC
lists, of course...

It had been my understanding that, like AVI CHAI, you don't approach
Grinspoon, but I was reading in the Boston Jewish Advocate about the
late Jonathan Samen at the JCC here who had reached out to Grinspoon
and started some awesome programming. (Their two most recent issues are
available for free, so click soon:
http://www.thejewishadvocate.com/news/2012-08-24/ Read both the article
and the obituary.) Of course, it is possible that this happened through
an institutional partnership relationship. In PJ's case, institutional
partnership means the group that does the distribution. It's a tough
balance -- we don't have the infrastructure for that, or even to get
local Federation grant funding to take on that role, and that role is
not what we want to be doing since it's all about the paperwork and
distribution, but those are the groups that end up the programming and
strategic outreach, which is where we shine.

This has been even more on my radar of late, as I've been seeing all of
this from the vantage point of Jewish communal outreach to new parents,
which includes things like PJ Library storytimes. These could easily be
done in synagogue libraries, by librarians. (In full honesty, I have
not been keeping up with HaSafran, and surfaced this thread when
searching my e-mail to follow up on my 7th month old's pending
membership...)

Maybe since DC is just starting out this is a good place to get in on
the ground level?

Glad to be a data-on-the-ground provider of Boston-area intel, but,
like Marga, no time to work on this...

Thank you

Sara
