Call for Papers: Judaica Librarianship
The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) is pleased to announce that its 
peer-reviewed journal, Judaica Librarianship, will be published online starting 
with the next issue. The journal will be available to subscribers for 12 months 
following the publication of each issue, while back issues will be freely 
accessible to all on the Internet. Additional information about the new online 
configuration will be released soon.

The Editorial Board of Judaica Librarianship invites submissions for the 
journal’s next issue, scheduled to appear in late 2013. We welcome research 
articles on all theoretical or practical aspects of Jewish Studies 
librarianship and cultural stewardship in the digital age, as well as 
historical studies or current surveys of noteworthy libraries or collections. 
All articles will go through a double-blind peer review process. We also 
welcome extensive reviews of reference works and electronic resources, 
including electronic databases and informational websites, as well as 
thoroughly revised and updated versions of papers presented at AJL Annual 
Conferences or chapter meetings.

We extend our invitation to the global community of scholars and information 
specialists in anticipation of a vigorous discussion on the multifaceted 
intersection of Library and Information Science and Jewish Studies. These are 
some of the relevant topics for article submissions:

  *   Theoretical or empirical studies integrating Library and Information 
Science with aspects of Jewish Studies and related fields that could stimulate 
the scholarly discussion about Jewish libraries. Possible areas of connection 
would include: the History of the Book, Bibliometrics, Literary Studies, Media 
Studies, Jewish languages and Linguistics, Information Technology, Literacy 
Studies, or Social History, to name a few.
  *   Best practices and policies for Jewish libraries of all kinds: school 
libraries (all levels); community center libraries; public libraries; Judaica 
collections in religious institutions; archival collections; museum and 
historical society libraries; research libraries; and special libraries.
  *   Innovative approaches to data curation, discovery tools, or preservation 
of library materials in the digital age.
  *   Descriptive essays and surveys of special collections.
  *   Digital Humanities projects relevant to Jewish Studies and other 
digitization projects.
  *   Historical or bibliographical studies pertaining to Hebraica and/or 
Judaica materials, libraries, or librarians.
  *   Library services for users, including but not limited to reference tools 
and instruction guidelines for teaching Jewish literacy, cultural programming, 
or any other outreach programs.
  *   Collaborative collection development initiatives across library networks.

AJL’s Student Essay Contest
Current students enrolled in any accredited Library and Information Science 
program are encouraged to submit essays relevant to the field of Jewish Studies 
librarianship to AJL’s Student Essay Contest. All student essays will be 
refereed; the winning essay will be considered for publication in the Student 
Essay section of Judaica Librarianship, and the winner will be awarded $300. 
Please refer to the Journal’s Call for Papers for suggested topics.

Focus and Scope
Judaica Librarianship is a peer-reviewed annual published by the Association of 
Jewish Libraries. Situated in the field of Library and Information Science and 
international in scope, the journal provides a forum for scholarship on the 
theory and practice of Jewish Studies librarianship and Information Studies.

Judaica Librarianship seeks to publish research articles and essays related to 
the development and management of Judaica collections in all types of libraries 
and archives, the initiation and coordination of digital curation projects, the 
creation and dissemination of information resources in all formats, and the 
promotion of Jewish information literacy for diverse audiences through various 
outreach activities. The editorial board welcomes submissions on all 
theoretical or practical aspects of Jewish Studies librarianship and cultural 
stewardship in the digital age, as well as historical studies or current 
surveys of noteworthy libraries or collections.

Please email articles, reviews, or letters, in English, to the editor 
(manuscripts should be single-spaced, in 12-point type). Typical peer-reviewed 
articles are 12-30 pages in length (3,000-8,000 words); column pieces tend to 
be shorter.

James Madison University (JMU) Libraries & Educational Technologies (L&ET) 
seeks a dynamic, creative, and service-oriented colleague to provide 
leadership, vision and oversight of JMU Libraries' digital collections. 
Reporting to the Director of Collections, the Digital Collections Librarian 
will work closely with colleagues across L&ET to ensure that JMU Libraries' 
digital collections are fully integrated into the Libraries' collections and 
services.  This position will serve as a member of a team of librarians and 
staff committed to effectively managing, accessing and preserving the 
Libraries' expanding digital collections, including serving as point person for 
outreach to faculty, staff and students in the implementation of a digital 
repository system. James Madison University is a public, comprehensive 
university of approximately 20,000 students located in the scenic Shenandoah 
Valley, two hours southwest of Washington, D.C.  The university has been ranked 
by U.S. News and World Report as the top-rated public regional master's level

part of the Libraries and Educational Technologies division, which has the 
mission of enriching our communities by building learning and information 
environments where people connect with ideas and with each other to discover, 
create, and share knowledge.

The Digital Collections Librarian manages JMU Libraries' locally created 
digital materials, taking a lead role in the creation, maintenance and 
stewardship of digital collections, including the digitization of special 
collections. This position provides strategies for effective management and 
preservation of library digital assets, informs conversations on scholarly 
communications and advises students and faculty on best practices for 
preserving scholarship and digital projects. The Digital Collections Librarian 
also collaborates with other units in L&ET to plan and implement systems 
related to digital collections, including repositories and digital asset 
management systems.  The successful candidate will establish priorities, manage 
projects, create workflows and identify digital collection development 
opportunities as informed by emerging trends and best practices in digital 
collection creation and management. Working within JMU Libraries' distributed 
digital collections environment, this position facilitates communication and 
workflows between staff across L&ET units working on digital projects and 
ensures internal and external stakeholders remain informed and engaged. This 
position is also responsible for investigating, planning and managing format 
conversions and migrations; promoting digital collections; seeking grant 
funding for digital initiatives and for modeling innovative and flexible 
solutions that meet the needs of JMU's communities of scholars and researchers. 
Responsible for a unit of 1 full-time employee and student assistants. This 
position also organizes training and/or outreach to ensure that staff acquire 
and maintain requisite skills and expertise, including training on appropriate 
systems. The Digital Collections Librarian will work closely with colleagues in 
Scholarly Content Systems, Special Collections, Metadata and Cataloging and 
other areas to coordinate digital collections projects and to ensure that the 
needs of each collection are successfully supported from digitization or 
acquisition to discovery.  L&ET boasts an established and well-regarded liaison 
program. This position will work closely with liaison librarians to foster use 
of digital collections within academic departments and engage departmental 
faculty and staff with digital collection support needs and educational 
opportunities. The position will be responsible for promoting digital 
collections to the University community. As part of the library faculty, the 
Digital Collections Librarian also participates in library-wide activities, 
serves on L&ET and university committees and represents the library and the 
university in a variety of groups and forums.

national resource description standards and emerging technologies, applying 
developments as appropriate and informing colleagues of potential impact on 
local practices; consult on and assist with the application and interpretation 
of appropriate metadata schema and workflows with staff engaged in repository 
and digital collections projects across L&ET; develop and implement processes, 
workflows and policies that improve the flow of and timely access to library 
materials and which are responsive to the needs of library users and other 
library units; investigate access-related issues and collaborate with 
colleagues to implement solutions and manage projects and initiatives related 
to access and discovery.  The Metadata Librarian is responsible for a unit of 2 
full-time employees, 2 wage positions as well as student assistants; organizes 
training in basic and/or special metadata implementations to ensure that staff 
acquire and maintain requisite skills and expertise, including training on 
appropriate systems; works closely with colleagues in E-Resources/Serials, 
Monographic Services, Scholarly Content Systems, Special Collections, Digital 
Collections and other areas to enhance discovery of and reliable access to 
JMU's collections via the implementation of new technologies and through the 
associated metadata creation, analysis, enrichment and maintenance; 
participates in library-wide activities; serves on L&ET and university 
committees and represents the library and the university in a variety of groups

Qualifications include ALA Accredited MLS; demonstrated record of professional 
engagement and leadership; demonstrated knowledge of metadata standards, 
schemas and tools (including, but not limited to EAD/EAC, Dublin Core, 
METS/MODS, VRA Core, BIBFRAME, MARC, FRBR, FRAD, RDA, AACR2-R, LCRI and LCSH); 
knowledge of integrated library systems, discovery tools, digital repository 
systems and a variety of computer-based resources which support metadata 
operations (such as MARCEdit, XSLT, SQL, Microsoft Excel, metadata crosswalks, 
W3C specifications, semantic web); demonstrated strong written and oral 
communication abilities; excellent interpersonal, organizational, project

assigned areas.  The Health Sciences Librarian will provide research and 
instructional services, develop instructional materials and manage collections 
in all formats to support health sciences and related areas, primarily at the 
undergraduate level.  This new position will be the second Health Sciences 
Librarian position in Rose Library and the two librarians will work closely 
together to provide a full range of support for rapidly growing health 
programs.  As a member of the Rose Library team, the Health Sciences Librarian 
will also participate in a tiered staffing model providing traditional and 
online research consultations.  In addition, the Health Sciences Librarian will 
collaborate with colleagues throughout Libraries and Educational Technologies 
to develop and promote library services that support teaching and research 
across the curriculum.
Qualifications include ALA-accredited MLS is required, academic library 
experience is preferred and academic coursework in health sciences or 
experience in health sciences librarianship preferred. The successful candidate 
will also bring excellent interpersonal, time-management, analytical and
