[ha-Safran] FW: DAVID - an award-winning full-length feature film for your Film Collection

2013-11-13 Thread Ruth Diskin
Shalom Safranim,

DAVID - One Boy. Two Faiths (An Award-winning film by Joel Fendelman)

Issues of identity and cultural diversity are part of everyday life for many
American kids. In this moving film, a chance meeting turns into a fortuitous
opportunity for one boy to learn about the other as he learns about himself.

A recent review in Educational Media Review Online called DAVID:
"Technically, this film is about as perfect as one could hope for".

Already purchased by Duke, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania and the
Library of Congress, this highly recommended film would be a great asset to
your collection as well. The purchase price for university libraries is $300
+ shipping and handling and $115 +shipping and handling for public
libraries.

You can read more about award-winning DAVID at
 http://www.ruthfilms.com/david.html,

[ha-Safran] Alephino

2013-11-13 Thread Veronica Belling
Hi there

I am needing information about Exlibris's 'Alephino' for the committee of
the Jacob Gitlin Library in Cape Town.

Does anybody use it or know anything about it? Or could you tell me whom to
contact? Is it affordable for a small lending library?

Would appreciate any help you can give.

Veronica

[ha-Safran] questions to list

2013-11-13 Thread Riva Berleant
Colleagues,
I'd like two recommendations for purchase. I can buy only
one book in each category.

1. a contemporary Jewish humor book that would appeal to kids. We've
got Jewish humor books, but the kids don't find them funny.

2. a recent, comprehensive book on antisemitism.

Thanks, as usual.

Thank you for sharing, Robbin. I was happy to read Scholastic's response. My
school is scheduled to have a Scholastic Book Fair next week and I was
concerned about how parents would react because I saw the article posted on

I will pulling the offending book if it arrives as part of the shipment.

Its worth noting that Scholastic has always been accommodating at sending books
of Jewish interest to the school for our book fairs.

I hope that journalists and/or Scholastic will further uncover who drew and
accepted the map as fit for publication in the first place. Scholastic should
be mortified and do more than stop shipping it. They should do a broader al

[ha-Safran] maps

2013-11-13 Thread Temple Beth Emeth Library
I have also found the problem that maps of Israel for student use in our
religious schools here in Michigan often do not indicate the line between
the disputed territories and Israel and do not mention the Palestinian
Authority.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

Re: [ha-Safran] recall of popular children's book

2013-11-13 Thread RCFRISCHER
None of the reactions I read noted that the book was a translation from an
Italian series. To have such a blatant omission in a European work doesn't
surprise, does it? It seems to me highly probable that the original
graphics were in that edition and, whether carelessly or deliberately, just
reprinted in the English edition. What do you think?

I agree with Toby that leaving all the existing copies out there is like
letting all the feathers in that old lashan hara story blow in the prevailing
winds. What a dilemma and an embarrassment for this generally careful and
well respected house

I hope that journalists and/or Scholastic will further uncover who drew
and accepted the map as fit for publication in the first place. Scholastic
should be mortified and do more than stop shipping it. They should do a
broader al chet and recall as many copies as they can!

I thought people would be interested in this article that was sent to me
by a parent who wanted to know if we had this book in our library. We have
many of the series by Scholastic, but, by chance, we don’t have this one.
