[ha-Safran] Help choosing speakers for fall

2014-04-30 Thread Rachel Haus
Dear hasafranim,

I am in the process of trying to choose an author/speaker for the fall and
having some trouble. My criteria is someone with a recent book or books out
(within a year or 2) and can do a children's program along with an adult
lecture. I've considered Rabbi Jamie Korngold (The Adventure Rabbi) but the
price is quite high for us. Any other ideas?

Re: [ha-Safran] how to romanize a shva merachef

2014-04-30 Thread Robert M. TALBOTT
Hi Haim

It depends on your romanization scheme. LC's romanization system does not
recognize the sheva merahef, though one can easily imagine that there are
libraries out there using alternative schemes. If your library does in
fact follow LC/PCC, then "bi-khelal" would be the "correct" option.

The best source for divining LC's will (if one is so inclined) is Hebraica
Cataloging by Paul Maher. Solutions may be found there, though there is no
promise that said solutions will be satisfying.

Hope that helps

Bob

Re: [ha-Safran] how to romanize a shva merachef

2014-04-30 Thread Heidi G Lerner
Hi Hayim,
We do romanize this as bi-khelal. ALA/LC romanization is focused on "sheva naʻ"
and "sheva naḥ". Take a look at Paul Maher's "Hebraica cataloging" (page 10).

Here is the link to the online version:

Dear Safranim,

I am cataloging a Hebrew book hat has the word בכלל in the title. The ב takes a
hirik and the כ keeps the shva. This shva becomes a shva merachef. My question
is: in romanizing this word should it be bikhlal or bi-khelal? My inclination
is towards the former, since I've been taught that the shva merachef is not a
real (vocalized) shva.

Thank you and Hodsh tov,
Haim

New YA book from the Boston Workmen's Circle!

The Veterans of History
A Young Person's History of the Jews

by Mitchell Silver

The Veterans of History is a compelling narrative of Jewish history for young
adults, covering a broad sweep of history from Biblical times to the present
day. It provides the historical basis for an exploration of Jewish identity
rooted in Jewish cultural literacy and traditions of social justice.

Written in an accessible style, the book includes questions for discussion,
making it ideal to spark thoughtful conversations in classrooms, youth groups,
or within a family setting.

What People Are Saying:

“…a rich, lively and informative brief history of the Jewish experience which
can be read usefully by readers of all ages. Silver is a liberal and a
secularist who clearly loves Jewish community and culture and cares deeply
about all people. He is scrupulously objective in describing the triumphs and
tragedies of Jewish history from its beginnings to the present, including
religious, political, cultural and social dimensions. This is the work of a
consummate ‘storyteller’ in the best sense.”

Dr. David M. Gordis, President Emeritus of Hebrew College, and Founding
Director of the National Center on Jewish Policy Studies

“Mitchell Silver’s wonderful and engaging summary of the history of the Jews is
a useful tool to reach out to our youngsters. I will be recommending it to our
b’nai mitzvah as part of their preparation.”

Rabbi Moshe Waldoks, Temple Beth Zion, Brookline, MA

[ha-Safran] New Hebrew Literature e-catalog available

2014-04-30 Thread judaica man

Dear Friends and Patrons,

My latest monthly catalog of Jewish books is now available. The topic of the
listings is Jewish literature, divided into 2 categories: 1) Literature of the
Medieval Period and 2) Modern Hebrew Literature starting with the works of
Moshe Chayim Luzzato, as Bialik delineated the timeline for that period.

The catalog contains over 150 items of which we have just one copy of each
book, so orders are on a first come first served basis. We will be happy to
answer any questions you may have, and feel free to ask us for books on the
topic as well and we will try to find them for you.

Respectfully, Dr. Baruch Falach
