Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish Food Books
Hi Lauren, Thanks for the list. Just recently I stumbled across another memoir you may want to add, STUFFED: Adventures of a Restaurant Family by Patricia Volk. Published in 2002 by Knopf , it's full of wildly funny characters and incidents as three generations of Volks and Morgens bring new innovations to all their adventures, food-centric or not. From Great-Grandfather Sussman Volk's pastrami to Uncle Albert's scallion spotted cream cheese, the author makes sure all her family's flavor is caught here for you to savor. Enjoy. [ha-Safran] Reminder: vote coming up next week
Dear AJL Members: One last reminder that on Monday, Nov. 3, you should receive an email message with a link to an online ballot. Below, I've repeated the background information you need to know. The constitution is also posted on the AJL website (www.jewishlibraries.org) with the changes marked in red. Joy Kingsolver * Upcoming Vote to Amend the AJL Constitution, Nov. 3-17, 2014 Members of AJL are asked to vote on 3 changes to our constitution. The vote will take place online; members in good standing as of Sept. 30, 2014 will receive an email message on November 3 with a link to an online ballot. If your email address has changed, please be sure to update it in your AJL profile. For assistance or questions about your membership status, please contact Sheryl Stahl at sst...@huc.edu. If you do not receive a link to the ballot on November 3, please contact Joy Kingsolver at joy.kingsol...@gmail.com. Voting will close at midnight, EST, on Nov. 17. Explanation of the Proposed Changes Our constitution was written in 1972, and we have often needed to make adjustments to bring it up to date. Once again, this year we need to amend it to reflect the way AJL carries out its mission. The changes we are proposing fall into 3 categories: 1. The AJL Board and Council have traditionally met in December or January for midwinter business meetings. These are important mid-year meetings where updates are shared, progress on tasks is checked, and decisions are made relating to the annual meeting in June. But these meetings have always required expensive travel and hotel arrangements. We would like to take advantage of technology that allows us to meet by phone or online in virtual meetings. This would free up more of our resources to spend on our core mission. This would not affect our annual conferences; we are still committed to holding an annual meeting every year. We must authorize our Board, our Council, and our committees to hold virtual meetings between annual meetings, when needed. This requires changes to the Constitution, Article V (Administration) and in the Bylaws, Article II (Committees). 2. To give our leaders more flexibility in meeting their financial commitments, we need to increase the amount that they are able to spend above their budget lines, in an emergency. This change occurs in our Bylaws, Art. V (Fiscal Policy). 3. Due to an oversight, the word “or” was omitted from Article V, Section 2 of the Constitution. Special meetings of the Board are called by the president when needed, OR by petition of its members. This the the case for special meetings of Council and of the Association as well. The omission of the word “or” happened years ago, and wasn’t spotted until recently. This change corrects the error. [ha-Safran] J by Howard Jacobson
I recently reviewed Howard Jacobson's (the British Philip Roth) new book, J in the Jewish Journal and it was fascinating-and would make a good book group read. It was on the short list for the Booker Prize this year (it didn't win). Quite a complex book, but I think this group should be aware of it. By the way, best not to try it as an audiobook-it doesn't work well for that format. http://www.jewishjournal.com/culture/article/a_future_without_jews_if_anti_semitism_won [cid:image003.jpg@01CFF37D.A8CFB580] Lisa Silverman Library Director, Sinai Temple Blumenthal Library 10400 WILSHIRE BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES, CA 90024 310-481-3215 (direct) 310-481-3218 (main) library.sinaitemple.orghttp://library.sinaitemple.org/ __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran

[ha-Safran] OPALS and / or Library World
I am a member of the Library Committee of Temple Beth El in Providence, Rhode Island. We're a general collections and browsing library of around 10 -15 thousand volumes. Our library consist of children's books, young adult fiction and non fiction, and adult fiction and non fiction. We're a Reform synagogue and most of our collection is in English. Some of our material has been cataloged using the Winnebago cataloging module. We never migrated to Follett, although our former librarian continued to create cataloging records and spine labels using Winnebago. The Committee is looking into OPALS web-based system for our online public catalog and for cataloging, maintaining local holding records, and circulation. The other system that we are considering is Library World. We would appreciate any input and suggestions you may have on these two systems: Ease of implementation and usage. Is there a heavy learning curve for one or the other system? What is the level of technical expertise and skills needed for initial implementation? Once implemented, is ongoing maintenance a smooth process, with few glitches? Users reactions to the OPACs. Any suggestions of online features and design that users found most useful. Useful links? Cost. A tricky question. Any ball park estimations of implementation cost and ongoing maintenance? The test database. What features need to be especially tested and / or questions that are most useful when planning for a test database. What are the key questions we should be asking to the vendor or issues to look into? Vendor support. Is vendor support easily available through e-mail, chats, or phone? How helpful are onsite vendors? And in summation: Once again, we'd appreciate all your suggestions and thoughts of which system to choose … or can some one suggest another system? Is there a AJL Committee or source of consultation for these questions? I'd welcome all comments. I am the contact or point person for implementing the system and along with Hasafran I can be reached at j...@cox.net. We had no trouble learning OPALS. The only thing that was less satisfactory than Spectrum was that they make you select MARC records from the libraries they list. Not a big deal because it includes LC, but once in a while when I couldn't find something in LC I could find it in my local library catalog, and OPALS doesn't pick those up. Also you can't make your labels in any font you want, and there's a limited selection of spine labels that work. They're very easy to select and print. Users reactions to the OPACs. Any suggestions of online features and design that users found most useful. Useful links? Having the catalog online. Also, nice features like showing pictures of new arrival books on start screen. Cost. A tricky question. Any ball park estimations of implementation cost and ongoing maintenance? We pay $500 a year maintenance plus $250 a year hosting. Forget what startup was (not in the office) but not much. The test database. What features need to be especially tested and / or questions that are most useful when planning for a test database. What are the key questions we should be asking to the vendor or issues to look into? Testing is a great feature. Only problem is that we couldn't migrate our circulation records. They are geared to people who return books promptly, where we have members who keep them out for years. So we manually transcribed some of those but finally gave u on them. Vendor support. Is vendor support easily available through e-mail, chats, or phone? How helpful are onsite vendors? Email and phone, and it's very prompt. Is there a AJL Committee or source of consultation for these questions? I'd welcome all comments. I am the contact or point person for implementing the system and along with Hasafran I can be reached at j...@cox.net.
