[ha-Safran] THE JEWS OF CHINA [???]

2015-07-19 Thread Donald Weinshank
Shalom Safranim Ve'Safraniot

I need your help in looking for a book which may not exist.

A friend has a great deal of expertise on China and a solid knowledge of
Judaism. This person apparently does not know about the intersect between
these two.

The book for which I am looking would have a title along the lines of THE
JEWS OF CHINA.

Can you recommend such a book?

2015-07-19 Thread Altschiller, Donald S
Dear Prof. Weinshank,

Prof. Jonathan Goldstein has written two books on the Jews of China.
Please check out this bibliography

for a full citation of his titles and a list of other works on Jews in China.
(The bibliography was compiled by a Kenyon College faculty member.) You might
also look at the Sino-Judaic Institute site which
contains much fascinating information on both Jews in China and also in Asia.

Hope these sites are helpful!

[ha-Safran] Links between the National Library Catalog and the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book

2015-07-19 Thread Elhanan Adler
For those who were not present at the NLI session in Silver Spring:

The Bibliography of the Hebrew Book Project (BHB) is a very detailed
bibliographic record
which aims to describe all published works in Hebrew script from the
beginning of Hebrew
printing up to 1960. The description is much more detailed than regular
cataloging and
includes such details as names of authors of approbations (haskamot),
bibliographic
references, etc.

The BHB was originally published commercially on CD-ROM, but several years
ago the NLI
purchased the rights to the database and converted it to an open-access
one, using the
Library's standard ALEPH software.

About 90% of the BHB recorded titles are based on the NLI's collection
(location is noted for
items not held by the NLI).

Since the rules of description of the BHB and the NLI catalog are very
different, it has been
difficult to navigate from one to the other, or to transfer data from the
BHB to NLI.

The NLI is now adding links within its catalog to open the BHB record
corresponding to the
NLI's record. These links have been added to about 60,000 records with
another approximately
30,000 remaining (mostly 19th and 20th century imprints). Since this
process is semi-automatic
it is possible that some incorrect links have been created. Please let us
know if you
encounter such cases.

[ha-Safran] n'div lev and Exodus 36.6 with respect to The Jews of China

2015-07-19 Thread Donald Weinshank
I am profoundly grateful for the responses to my question about source
materials regarding The Jews of China.

Talk about "those whose heart so moves them!"

As Moses says in Ex 36.6

6Moses thereupon had this
proclamation made throughout the camp: “Let
no man or woman make further effort toward
gifts for the sanctuary!” So the people stopped
bringing: 7their efforts had been more than
enough for all the tasks to be done.* [JPS trans.]*

2015-07-19 Thread Lois Ruby
Is this the book you're looking for?

The Jews of Kaifeng, China: History, Culture, and Religion,
by Xu Xin.

I had the pleasure of traveling to Kaifeng with Mr. Xu a few years back to meet
indigenous Chinese people who claim to be descendants of the Jews of China
whose history goes back to about the 12th century. He holds the equivalent of
the Chair of Judaica at Nanjing University, and he periodically plans symposia
on Jewish cultural matters for Chinese professors across the country. A most
interesting gentleman!
