Re: [ha-Safran] Graphic novels

2016-12-14 Thread Amy Turim
Hi Arlene -

That's pretty advanced reading for a 2nd grader. I've got a few to add to
the list, but definitely take a look at them first - I'm quite careful about
where I shelve the graphic novels in my library. Rabbi Harvey and Barry
Deutsch are fine in the YA section, but so many of them are visually or
contextually "graphic" that I keep them in an open space in the adult book
area, where I can keep an eye on who's looking...

Here are some ideas:

LILY RENEE; ESCAPE ARTIST by Trina Robbins

MENDEL'S DAUGHTER; A MEMOIR by Martin Lemelman

ANNE FRANK: THE ANNE FRANK HOUSE AUTORIZED GRAPHIC BIOGRAPHY
by Sid Jacobson

JEWS IN AMERICA: A CARTOON HISTORY by David Gantz

The first one should be fun for the student. MENDEL'S DAUGHTER is a
re-telling of a Holocaust story - including a lot of iconography -- and the
next two are good to have on hand, but probably not right for this student.

I've really loaded up on the Anne Frank books that are appropriate for
younger ages. So many girls eagerly check out the Diary and are discouraged
by the difficulty and density, and my fear is that they'll never pick it up
again. I'm very pleased to be able to steer them to alternative "Anne"
books.

Good luck, Arlene - let's hope for more graphic novels. (Rabbi Harvey is a
godsend for struggling readers!)

Subject: [ha-Safran] Graphic novels

Hello!

I was approached by a second grader in the Hebrew School about graphic
novels for her age. She seems particularly advanced and has read the Barry
Deutsch books and loved them. Are there any other graphic novels/books with
Jewish content that I can purchase? I have the Rabbi Harvey books also.

Thanks

Arlene

2016-12-14 Thread Steven BERGSON
Please go to
http://databases.jewishlibraries.org/sites/default/files/bibliographies/jewish_graphic_books.pdf

At the bottom of the bibliography, there are 2 sections : Children's Fiction
and Children's Non-Fiction.

Some are more appropriate for Grade 2 than others, but it's a short list to
cull from.

[ha-Safran] One day left to submit proposals to the WCJS!!

2016-12-14 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca
Dear all,

I have one day left to submit titles for papers to the World Congress of Jewish
Studies. I haven't received any responses to my last panel idea. Another idea
was a panel to celebrate the 500th year of the publishing of Mikraot Gedolot
and the 500th anniversary of the Venice Ghetto. Alternatively, we can have a
non-themed libraries' session. But we really need at titles for least three
papers.

Please let me know asap!

And don't forget that AJL will help with registration and membership.

Kind regards,
Rebecca

Subject: [ha-Safran] Last call for papers for the World Congress of Jewish
Studies in Jerusalem 2017

Dear Safranim,

The deadline for proposals to the World Congress of Jewish Studies conference
in 2017 is rapidly approaching.

I received very few responses to my previous call for ideas, but I think it
would be great to put forward a panel within the Research Projects and
Technology Division on Open Access Resources and Digital Initiatives

I can put forward a paper on my Library's collaborative project with the
Jamaican Jewish Tombstones Research Group to create an online Jewish Jamaican
Archives database and Digital Humanities project.

Please let me know if you have something that would fit the topic of this panel.

Kind regards,
Rebecca

Dear Safranim,

The deadline for proposals to the World Congress of Jewish Studies conference
in 2017 is in early December. We would to continue our tradition of having an
AJL panel session at this important conference.

I am attaching the WCJS posters in English and Hebrew so that you can see the
broad subject divisions. I would welcome ideas for a panel, and ideas for
individual papers.

If you would like to participate, please write to me as soon as possible before
November 30.

Many thanks,
