[ha-Safran] Holocaust material

2019-05-06 Thread Arlene Ratzabi via Hasafran
I was asked by our Hebrew High School Director for books for his group leader
to read that would present an overview of the concentration camps and a general
history of the Holocaust. She has some knowledge but since she will be leading
a group of students in Europe, she wanted to be more prepared to answer
questions. I have a fairly large collection of books for youth and adults on
the Holocaust but I thought that I would consult our group as well.

Thanks very much,
Arlene

Re: [ha-Safran] Using microfiche in the 70s

2019-05-06 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
The better machines had printers attached. Unfortunately, the quality was often
poor. The reference book you remember  was probably green bound  The Readers'
Guide to Periodical Literature.

It certainly was a tedious process, but it did work.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Using microfiche in the 70s

Hi Friends,

I am trying to recall how we used microfiche before email. If someone in the
1970s wanted to research newspapers what was the process? In my recollection it
started with looking up the topic in a large reference book, locating the
appropriate article and ordering the film from the research office in the
library. What I don’t remember is how we made copies of the film from the
reader. I’m working on a project and I want to be sure I am accurate.
Thanks in advance for any help!
All best,Barbara Bietz

Leah gave me first library job. At the end of my first year at YU I interviewed

offered me the job that summer and I started at the start of my second year. I
held this position for 6 years.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Leah Adler

Dear colleagues,

I'm very sad to report that Leah Adler, Head Librarian of Hebraica-Judaica at
Yeshiva University, died this weekend after an illness that she managed quietly
and successfully until recently. The funeral will be in Israel, and the flight
to Israel is today. As plans for a memorial at the Gottesman Library of
Hebraica-Judaica materialize, we'll send out a notice.

Throughout her illness, rather than talk about herself and her physical
discomfort, Leah expressed concern for others--about the effect of her absence
on their work loads. In the workplace, Leah was always disarmingly candid and
honest; she never hesitated to bring up important issues, regardless of how
challenging those issues were.

After decades of service, Leah seems inseparable from the history of Yeshiva
University Libraries. We all share in mourning her loss. Let us all support
one another as we grieve.

Re: [ha-Safran] Using microfiche in the 70s

2019-05-06 Thread Ted via Hasafran
There were (and still are) very expensive machines that projected the microfilm
image onto a sort of a mirror, and then a lens that, basically, took a picture
of that image and printed it. Those machines had lots of moving parts and
were delicate and prone to breaking. If I remember correctly, they
didn't use 'regular' paper - they used rolls of coated paper and the image was
'burnt' onto the coating.

Minolta made them, Bell and Howell made them, and maybe a couple others.
Expensive to buy, maintain, and use. But you could fit a thousand pieces of
microfiche into a file cabinet drawer.

started with looking up the topic in a large reference book, locating the
