I don't want to defend rude behavior, however, many times I have helped
someone with a difficult printing situation. I tried so many options
before it worked, that I couldn't even remember what I did.

We have a cart where we put any donated books that we don't want to add to
our collection. The sign says "Free, or make a donation to the library fund
or temple". Remarkably, I rarely have to geniza or throw out books on that
cart, regardless of how strange or esoteric the topics.

Re: [ha-Safran] UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE IN A PUBLIC LIBRARY DEPT.

2019-09-04 Thread Barbara Karp via Hasafran
I, too, am a retired librarian (whose official career ended because my position
was eliminated). I remember a high school student came into my school library
with a request. She needed a novel and related nonfiction (to determine the
realism of the fictional portrayal of the subject) for a term paper on the
theme of prejudice. The student said she went to the public library, and the
librarian told her it was a stupid topic. Even if I did not approve of the
subject, it would be unthinkable to voice my opinion to a patron or anyone
else. It is disturbing to discover that bad apples exist in our
service-oriented profession.

[ha-Safran] what to do with duplicate books, VHS tapes, cassettes, etc.

2019-09-04 Thread Judy Petersen via Hasafran
Hi,     The storage space in my library consists of cardboard boxes under our
wooden shelving.  I have all my duplicate books (which I pulled because I
didn't have enough shelf space to accommodate duplicates), plus all the donated
books I put in our semi-annual book sale stored in boxes under the regular
bookshelves.  I also have some vinyl records, VHS tapes and cassette tapes that
are no longer usable as practically no one uses those technologies anymore.
My Executive Director wants me to "beautify" the Library by getting rid of as
many boxes as possible.  I'll probably transfer the books for sale to cubes or
tubs for a better "look", but I really should get rid of at least some of it as
it is threatening to overwhelm the library.     I've tried a local used
bookstore that has a buy back policy, but they essentially have no need for any
Judaica.  I'd be happy to donate anything anyone would like (I have over 100
books available, in generally good condition, with spine labels according to
the Weine cataloging system) for the cost of shipping to anyone who would like
them.  Or if anyone knows of anyone who might need them--prisons?, Jewish
senior centers or nursing homes? or...?   Other suggestions also welcome!!!
I will only throw things away as a last resort.     Many thanks!!

Re: [ha-Safran] UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE IN A PUBLIC LIBRARY DEPT.

2019-09-04 Thread Rebecca Levitan via Hasafran
?Speaking as a public librarian I'm horrified what this woman said that. I know
I've had my share of frustrations with patrons but it would never occur to me
to say such a horrible thing to anyone. Your curt reply was totally warranted
and she clearly has no value in good customer service.

Robby,
It was lousy of her, but I do believe she is the aberration, not the norm. I've
been using my local public library (LAPL/Westchester branch) extensively since
my retirement, and the staff is always kind, welcoming, and friendly. So the
hell with her - I'm glad you put her in her place :)

Subject: [ha-Safran] UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE IN A PUBLIC LIBRARY DEPT.

I was at the nearby public library and politely asked a librarian to help me
print out a color attachment from an Email, which contained a forthcoming
article I wrote for a journal. I've been retired from our profession for quite
a few years now, and admit my computer skills are not the best. After she
finished sending the article to a color printer, she said in a most
condescending and haughty manner: "I guarantee you weren't paying attention to
how I did this." She was totally wrong, as I was paying very close attention,
to her navigating the computer's prompts. She wasn't expecting my curt reply:
"I'm a retired library director, and I would have never talked to a patron like
that." It is no secret that that the people in our profession still have a
less than positive image. It is librarians such as the one I unfortunately
encountered today who cause that to be the case. If others on Hasafran want to
comment about this, I would like to read their postings.

2019-09-04 Thread books2gogh via Hasafran
I'm thinking it might be related to the culture of your city and its
library policies. Certainly not something I've encountered in our city
known for its Southern hospitality. Or maybe the person who helped you was
just having a bad hair day.

Re: [ha-Safran] UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE IN A PUBLIC LIBRARY DEPT.

2019-09-04 Thread Maxine Wolfson via Hasafran
The vast majority of public and private librarians
I've met and dealt with are untiringly courteous
even with the most difficult patrons.

Did she describe the steps she took to get to the
print queue? If not, she was definitely in the wrong.
