[ha-Safran] Survey on romanization

2019-09-23 Thread J N via Hasafran

This message is being cross-posted. Please excuse duplication.

Dear colleagues,

The Non-Latin Script MaterialsAffinity Group of the Linked Data for
Production-2 project invites you toparticipate in an online survey on
romanization in library catalogs. Librarycatalogs include romanization to
support the use of resources in non-Latin scripts. As library systems become
more powerful in handling native scripts, and withthe move to linked data,
there is a desire to re-evaluate the current practiceregarding romanization.
Before any decisions can be made, libraries need toconsider the impact on
patrons, library staff, and systems used to manage thoseresources.

This survey will be used to help make recommendations on the useof romanization
in library catalogs within a linked data environment.

This online survey should take approximately 5-7 minutes tocomplete and will be
available at the following link until October 8

https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0xmDmv1NgzCfBtP

Please forward the survey to anyone that you think might beinterested.

If you have questions about the survey, please contact Xiaoli Li
(x...@ucdavis.edu) or Larisa Walsh (wal...@uchicago.edu)

We are grateful for your participation and look forward to yourfeedback.

Kind regards,

[ha-Safran] query: recordings of Dara Horn speaking about ALL OTHER NIGHTS?

2019-09-23 Thread Erika Dreifus via Hasafran
Greetings, all:

Tomorrow my undergraduate course on "21st-Century Jewish Literature" will
be discussing Dara Horn's Civil War fiction (part of a unit on Jewish
experience across time and place). I've been looking for videos in which
the author speaks about the book, but so far, I haven't identified any. On
the chance that any of your libraries/synagogues/organizations may have
hosted such a discussion (and maybe posted a recording?), I'm requesting
that you share the relevant link with me. Having access to authors
discussing their work this way seems to engage my students. (Last Thursday,
a HIAS clip of David Bezmozgis worked nicely; my students had just read a
couple of the stories from his first collection as we concluded a unit on
"Newer Immigrant Stories.")

Thanks so much,
Erika

[ha-Safran] request for old Birnbaum or Artscroll Mahzorim and Siddurim

2019-09-23 Thread Rena Fruchter via Hasafran
The new South Philadelphia Shtiebel, led by our daughter, Rabbanit Dasi
Fruchter, will be holding services for the upcoming holidays. There are
over 100 people registered for services, so there is a need for inexpensive

synagogues that have upgraded to Artscroll or Koren that might give or sell
these to us for the Stiebel?

Re: [ha-Safran] Suggestions for cataloging nursery school library

2019-09-23 Thread Lieberman, Eli via Hasafran
Hello Jackie,

There are also two free open-source programs, Liblime Koha
(http://www.koha.org/main.asp?page=1030) and Evergreen
(https://evergreen-ils.org/) They are both modular and have granular controls
so you can set them up to your exact specifications. I suggested these to my
old synagogue when I offered to help set up their library for circulation but
it fell through. I have followed these projects for a long time as I am an
advocate for free open source alternatives in general whenever possible. I
can't vouch for their support if you encounter issues, but most open-source
projects have very robust community documentation/support forums as well as
formal support structures.

Best,
Eli Lieberman

[ha-Safran] Please Consider Joining The UNEQUIVOCALLY PRO-ISRAEL Librarians for Fairness

2019-09-23 Thread Librarians for Fairness via Hasafran
[Hi Yossi, I've slightly revised the Hasafran posting, by adding North

version, instead of the one sent earlier]

Librarians for Fairness
3:43 AM (15 hours ago)
to Hasafran, Librarians
Librarians for Fairness is expanding its membership, in part because the
anti-Israel librarians within our profession have been increasingly
active. You can be certain that they will never stop their demonizing.
Although we were founded some fifteen years ago, we've always been a small
organization, because we take great pains in preventing people who are
hostile to, or ambivalent about Israel from joining. If you are someone
who bemoans the so-called "occupation," we definitely don't want you.

This year, we have grown nicely. Just in the last few weeks we have added
eleven more librarians and professionals in allied fields to our
membership, because we have been individually contacting people. But after
some discussions among ourselves, we have decided to compose this Hasafran
posting. We need you.

Did you know that the only nation in the world (other than the U.S.A.) that
the American Library Association has had a condemning committee about was
Israel, via the ALA's fortunately now-disbanded Committee on Israeli
Censorship? That's right ... not Iran, not Syria, not Cuba, not North
Korea, not China, et al., but Israel, the freest of countries, was
targeted for that sort of unjustified vilification.

We are very careful about protecting the anonymity and privacy of our
people. There are no dues. The much larger group, Stand With Us covers our
expenses, and we are affiliated with it. We also belong to the wonderful,
pro-Israel AMCHA Coalition.

You can see our website by Googling Librarians for Fairness.

Members may be as active or inactive as they choose. And, of course,
should they ever want to, they are free to resign at any time, simply by
Emailing us.
If you decide to join Librarians for Fairness, just affirm that by

[ha-Safran] The Story Snipper is here

2019-09-23 Thread books2gogh via Hasafran
I'm delighted to announce just in time for Rosh HaShanah, I have finally
converted my Telly award winning videos to digital format and posted the
first two programs up to my new youtube channel, The Story Snipper.

The first story, The Birthday Shofar, is about a mischievous monkey who
frightens all the animals with her shiny new shofar. The youtube link is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_iP-dYEcNQ=283s

.
Please be sure to subscribe to my channel so you can be informed when
additional stories are posted up for viewing. Shana tova umetukah!

My second story/program is "The Sabbath Bride" also dealing with the theme
of repentance as well as Shabbat.

Permission is granted to download the videos and use in the classroom.

Shana tova umetuakah.

Re: [ha-Safran] Suggestions for Cataloging a Nursery School Library

2019-09-23 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
I second the suggestion of OPALS. It’s also reasonably priced and the tech help
is very responsive. It’s also pretty easy to learn.

We have been using OPALs, if it is within your
budget. It will printout labels for the barcode,
card pocket, card (if you're using the latter two),
tell you when an item is overdue, creates reports
etc.

Shalom,

I posted this in the summer, but I got a limited response.

I've volunteered to help get my synagogue's library in order. There are two
parts to the collections. The adult reference materials are held in the chapel
and will be checked out on an honor system; the children's library is in a room
that is being converted into an official library. Of course my synagogue will
be joining AJL.

Another shul member who already works in a public school will be in charge of
children's collection. She wanted to know what program works best for a
collection of about 1,000 title. We want to be able to check out books using a
scanner, so I'd also appreciate a suggestion as to what scanner you'd recommend.

Todah Rabbah and Shannah Tovah,

Jackie
