Re: [ha-Safran] The 2020 AJL Conference has been cancelled

2020-03-25 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
I applaud Dina, Kathy, and AJL Council for making this very difficult
decision as the health and safety of potential attendees is what has to be
foremost. There really was no other choice but to cancel the 2020 AJL
Conference.

Please note that ALA made the same tough choice yesterday and canceled the
2020 Annual Conference in Chicago:

*

The American Library Association has made the difficult decision to cancel
the Annual Conference & Exhibition scheduled for June 25-30, 2020, in
Chicago.

We wanted you to be among the first to hear the news
.
We are grateful to you for registering for the conference and know that you
share in our disappointment that we will not be meeting this summer.

We will be in touch in the coming days and weeks to discuss your
registration and provide information about potential alternative engagement
opportunities.
Thank you for your continued support of ALA and we ask that you be patient
with us as we work through this unprecedented situation.

[ha-Safran] Child of Holocaust Survivor Looking for Publisher

2020-03-25 Thread Jacqueline Benefraim via Hasafran
*please respond directly to Grace at: * gracio...@gmail.com

My memoir concerns being the first generation born in the US from parents
who made it out of Germany before the worst. I grew up in Washington
Heights-Inwood, in upper Manhattan and was born in 1939. Just in the past
few years I have learned that I have PTSD and the holocaust was the major
experience of my life and determined almost everything else that came
thereafter.
Could you steer me to a publisher for this book? It is essentially written
and edited.

Thank you,

Grace Freundlich, Truro, MA 02666-0090

[ha-Safran] The 2020 AJL Conference has been cancelled

2020-03-25 Thread Kathleen Bloomfield via Hasafran
[image: logo for AJL 2020 conference in Evenston]
AJL Conference 2020 Update: March 25, 2020

After much research, discussion, and deliberation, the Association of
Jewish Libraries has decided to cancel our annual conference scheduled for
June 29-July 1, 2020 in Evanston, IL.

We know that you are disappointed in hearing this news, but the AJL Board
felt strongly that there was no other choice to make given the uncertainty
of the progress of COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus).

We will be in touch soon with information for those who have pre-registered
for the conference and with information about potential alternative
opportunities for us to share our knowledge and skills. Our hope is to have
answers to these questions soon, but with the situation changing so
rapidly, and Passover on the horizon, it might be a few weeks.

Thank you for your continued support of AJL. We appreciate your patience as
we work through this unparalleled situation. The Board and Council hope to
have resources available for members related to librarianship in this
interesting time and ways to best serve our patrons.

A huge thank you goes out to our conference organizers, especially National
Conference Chair Lisa Silverman and local chairs, Rachel Kamin and Marcie
Eskin for all the work they and their committee did in preparation for the
conference.

Re: [ha-Safran] Good Jewish Websites for children and adults

2020-03-25 Thread books2gogh via Hasafran
openlibrary.org has thousands of ebooks to read totally free. The
reading quality isn't always the best because they have been digitized by
scanning the originals, which sometimes are many years back and the pages
are yellowed. There are a lot of "golden oldies." Search for ebooks.

Here is the first page of a subject search by the term "Jewish." These
lists include books that are not ebooks but there are still over 10,000

[ha-Safran] The loss of an amazing Judaica scholar- Mr. Yaakov Shelomoh Biegeleisen

2020-03-25 Thread Shirazi, Gail via Hasafran
It is with great sadness that I am writing to inform you of the passing of Mr.
Yaakov Shelomoh Biegeleisen. For over 60 + years Mr. Biegeleisen has been
supplying material to the Library of Congress and other institutions around the
world. His excellent service, boundless knowledge of Hebrew/Judaica book
publishing, scholarly manner and unique personality will be greatly missed by
the staff of the Israel and Judaica Section. Those who worked directly with
him at LC (Galina, Yisroel, Aaron and myself) will particularly miss the
excellent working relationships. When AJL was in NY, Galina and I had the
opportunity to visit his shop. We were amazed at how Mr. Biegeleisen knew
exactly where each book was located in the piles of material he had in the
store. He remembered, without checking, what he sent to us and approximately
when he sent it. He worked without a computer (until his nephew joined the
firm) and kept handwritten records which he could always locate ( going back
decades). His death is a great loss to the field of Judaica librarianship.

We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Biegeleisen family. Barukh
Dayan he-Emet.

Gail Shirazi and Galina Teverovsky
