[ha-Safran] Name that title

2021-06-28 Thread Rebecca Levitan via Hasafran
Hi all,

I had a patron looking for a book that is supposedly fiction with the word
"faith" in the title. It's (again, supposedly) about a Jewish family in New
Jersey, and the daughter starts to take an interest in the Shabbos Goy, so
the dad sends her away.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks!
Rebecca

[ha-Safran] Holocaust Memoir in a Survivor's Own Words

2021-06-28 Thread Lee Kikel via Hasafran
Good afternoon,

My name is Lee Goldman Kikel and I’m writing to ask if you might consider
offering my book, Perseverance: One Holocaust Survivor’s Journey from
Poland to America, in your library.

This is a story of my father’s trials through years of Nazi torture in the
ghetto, Auschwitz and other labor camps, told in his own words.

Melvin Goldman was born in Poland to a middle-class Jewish family and as a
young man had begun to learn the family’s metalworking trade. Then the
Nazis invaded and destroyed everything he knew. He endured years in the
ghetto, and the death camps left him physically and mentally broken, but
miraculously alive. He was determined to rise above the tragedy.

After his slow recovery in Europe, Melvin made it to the United States and
settled in the industrial city of Pittsburgh. He married, raised a daughter
and built a successful business, Lee Trading Company.

In the late 1970s, my father had the foresight to record his life story.
His recollections are the basis of this book. Additionally, I compiled
reflections and a large appendix with historical documentation.

This email includes a link to my website, which contains more details about
my book and a book trailer that gives a glimpse into my father’s life.

Title: Perseverance: One Holocaust Survivor’s Journey from Poland to America
by Lee Goldman Kikel and Melvin Goldman.

ISBN: 978-0-578-45752-9

Available: IngramSpark

Thank you for your consideration,

Lee Goldman Kikel

[ha-Safran] Creating an online research guide to Jewish studies archives and special collections

2021-06-28 Thread Jason Lustig via Hasafran
Friends, I am developing a research guide to Jewish archives, broadly defined,
which will be hosted online at
https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.jewisharchives.org__;!!KGKeukY!kc7kCamS-euEPVGALCu9Q0tE4fcyVUM79PGPpzWwjSlJsvKp8RYgCSltxm-_9JECRiI$
. It will consist of two components: First, a directory of archives and
special collections that deal with Jewish history and culture, with brief
profiles of what kinds of materials they hold and their histories. Secondly, I
am writing a general history of Jewish archives and collecting practices, in
order to contextualize the kinds of archives that we use for research in Jewish
studies. I plan to publish the guide this fall.

As part of this process, I’m looking to gather information on existing archives
and collections. Would you be able to take 5-10 minutes to fill out this
questionnaire about your holdings? Thank you!

Here is the questionnaire:

Re: [ha-Safran] Descriptive cataloging question

2021-06-28 Thread Emily Bergman via Hasafran
Are the sheets folded and bound so they're now pages, or can they be
described as folded leaves? If described as pages, I think the only thing
you can do is give a description in a note. Given how special these volumes
are, I'd even describe the covers in the notes. Emily
