Re: [ha-Safran] FW: The reason for warding the Fanny Goldstein Merit Award to Elliot Gertel

2022-08-31 Thread Elliot H. Gertel via Hasafran
Thank you, Emily, for the very nice article you wrote about my circuitous path
to Judaica librarianship and to a career as a librarian in general. And
thank you, Amalia, for adding a note about my longtime activity and
positions in AJL, dating back some 32 years.

I was also delighted to read the interview with fellow AJL veteran, Peggy
Pearlstein, in the same issue of *AJL News and Reviews, *July | August 2022
(p. 5), "Who Knows Four? Peggy Pearlstein!" What an honor to share space
in the digital pages of the bulletin with Peggy. She was a great guide in
her position as R (now RAS) president during my time as vice-president of
R (2004-2006) when we served on the Judaica Reference and Bibliography
Awards Committee and then when I was RAS president (2006-2008). I could
not have asked for a better mentor and role model. Peggy is an
exemplary professional
and one of AJL's great human treasures!

Re: [ha-Safran] AJL in Sept/Oct 2022 _American Libraries_

2022-08-31 Thread Emily Bergman via Hasafran
Kathy and I had lunch with Lessa this past spring, and we had a wonderful,
eye-opening conversation on both sides. Sometimes, we just need to bring
AJL to others' attention and explain why we need inclusion. I know we're
disappointed by the exclusion from some groups, but this positive
experience with Lessa is a huge step forward and is another stepping stone
for those of us working in ALA. Sally has taken on a tremendous role on
the EDI Assembly Steering Committee (or whatever it's new name is), and
she's not even one of the liaisons! Thank you Sally. Kathy created our
Schmooze and Nosh for several Annual and Midwinter conferences and
moderated an incredibly successful AJL President's Program at ALA Annual,
which we need to continue annually. Sally, Susan, and I have projects in
the works. It takes work, so anyone who is an ALA member and wants to
help, you're welcome to join the effort. Thanks, Emily

Re: [ha-Safran] two items of note

2022-08-31 Thread Erika Dreifus via Hasafran
Oh, my, Emily--I'm blushing!

In truth, a couple of the other stories are also available online:

   - "*Lebensraum*" (featuring the same central couple from "Homecomings")
is available thanks to *Ilanot Review*:

   - "The Quiet American, Or How to Be a Good Guest," is available along
with an interview via *Shelf Unbound*:

And I'm always happy to meet with book clubs/groups! :-)

Many thanks again,
Erika

A quick message to share two items of potential interest.

[ha-Safran] Chabad Israe Center Atlanta library

2022-08-31 Thread books2gogh via Hasafran
I'm writing on behalf of Hana Lapidot who is doing the preliminary work to
set up a Hebrew language library at the Chabad Israel Center in Atlanta,
GA. A supporter of the center donated a major collection of Hebrew books.
She is interested in a simple and inexpensive software program to manage
the circulation.

I've been out of Judaic libraries for many years and retired from a public
school library 4 years ago. (Unfortunately, Jewish high school libraries
and librarians are an endangered species). I told Hana to be sure to join
AJL. If anyone has any advice to offer, please contact her directly at
hlapido...@gmail.com.
