Re: [ha-Safran] question
Hi Julie, this might only work well in my situation, i.e. a small Conservative shul with limited holiday traffic, but since you mention volunteer staffers When I first started running our library, about 15 yrs ago, I insisted the doors be closed when no staff could be present. I was mostly afraid of theft. But there was great clamor for the library to be opened on Shabbat and other holidays, so I nervously devised a system that, in the end, has worked very well. 1) We made up a member's card file box, alphabetized by last name, placed on a table one sees the minute you walk in. 2) Next to the file box, I placed clear instructions -- the patron is to place their name card in another box also on the table. 3) The next day (or whenever I could get to it), I would contact the patron whose card is in the box and ask what was checked out. (Frequent shabbat patrons often email me independently to tell me what they checked out.) 4) With some older books that still have the circulation cards in them, I ask the patron to paperclip the card to their name card and place it in the box. Each year I reintroduce the system to the congregation for the benefit of new members. A few books have walked over the years, but not many. Overall, the system has worked pretty well, but like I said, ours is a small congregation. Hope that helps.
