Re: [ha-Safran] Title suggestions needed

2016-02-11 Thread Beth Braunstein
Hi
I highly suggest Joseph Telushkin's books such as Jewish literacy , biblical
literacy, Jewish wisdom, "words that hurt words the heal "and he has a set of
books on Jewish ethics.
I also recommend Avi Weiss' book called Holistic Prayer.( not sure if it's in
paperback)
Perhaps you may also consider Halachic Man by Joseph soleveichik
 Hope this is helpful

wow---I knew Sol steinmetz very well -( we lived in Pelham
Parkway--Shoshanna--your parents are Steven and Leba--they know us well--He
was an amazing man of great Jewish knowledge and a lexicographer par
excellence. I have his book "the little refugees" which contains a copy of
the letter which informed him of winning the prize for the "holy ones" and
another story called"You could be a Padre Yourself". It mentions that they
printed the stories in "the Masmid" YU undergraduate yearbook in 1952.Hope
this is helpful. How is your grandma Tziporrah? Send our best to your

[ha-Safran] looking for a book title

2022-01-24 Thread Beth Braunstein via Hasafran
I'm trying to track down a book title.
the book was written several years back for middle grades about a girl who
had a holocaust survivor grandmother . The girl was toying with the idea of
converting to Christianity ( she had rosary beads). The book Had a cross on
the cover. I'm quite sure it won a Sydney Taylor book award. It won the
award the year the AJL conference was in Boston.
Want to purchase this book for a reader.
Thanks all for your help,
Beth Braunstein

Re: [ha-Safran] thoughts on "Let the celebration begin"

2022-05-03 Thread Beth Braunstein via Hasafran
I've had a long career as a Jewish day school librarian in NYC. One of my
specialty areas is teaching students and professionals about appropriate
children's literature about tolerance and respecting diversity. Over the
years I have led workshops at the holocaust museum and other professional
Jewish conferences. I must say that "Let the celebrations begin" was always
an example of a misguided, inappropriate book for children. The
illustrations, themes and characters are so developmentally inappropriate
for a picture genre. I kept my copy of the book in my "private office
collection" to use as a teaching tool for a book that should not be used
with children.
Holocaust education is more important than ever , especially in light of
the aging survivor population. But educators and authors must still be
vigilant in making developmentally appropriate choices.
Best Regards,
BETH A. BRAUNSTEIN

Re: [ha-Safran] heidi's presentation

2022-11-24 Thread Beth Braunstein via Hasafran
Thank you Heidi for your knowledgeable and animated presentation… as a long
term day school librarian I have always been frustrated with the push for
Holocaust literature for children not developmentally ready for it. Thanks so
much for emphasizing the disadvantages of many of these books.
Happy thanksgiving ,
