I received an email from writer Simon Sion Ebrahimi which I have copied

I'm an Iranian-American Jewish writer. I escaped Iran with my family after
being taken hostage during the 1979 revolution. Based on my experiences

Please visit my website: www.SimonEbrahimi.com and read the first two

[ha-Safran] Queen of the Jews Book Tour: CA, FL, NJ, NY

2013-08-27 Thread Danielle Winter
Shalom Safranim,

Book your calenders for the *Queen of the Jews* Book Tour. Dates are below.

Queen Salome Alexandra ruled Judea (modern-day Israel) in the first century
BCE. Vividly evoking scenes of ancient Jerusalem, Judy Petsonk's novel
brings to life the queen's stormy relationship with her husband, and her
love for the people who called her Shalom-Zion: the peace of Zion.

"A GRIPPING, FUN READ... Judy Petsonk's sexy heroine, Queen Salome
Alexandra, possesses the brains, hutzpah, and vision to save Israel not
only from its many enemies but also from its own conflicted nature. A
marvelous window into a neglected and little-known chapter of Jewish
history." - Ellen Frankel, Former Editor in Chief of the Jewish Publication
Society

[ha-Safran] Singer family film?

2013-10-02 Thread Danielle Winter
Hi all,

Besides Yentl (which IB Singer hated, fyi) and the documentary Isaac in
America, does anybody know of any films/footage about/pertaining to Isaac
Bashevis Singer, Israel Joshua Singer and Esther Kreitman? It can be a
document of their life or something highlighting their works. Thanks in
advance for any suggestions or leads.
Radio would be fine too.

Best,
Danielle

[ha-Safran] Great Jewish Books high school program

2014-03-04 Thread Danielle Winter
Please share this (free) one week summer program with your
literature-loving high school patrons, students, friends and family members:

Great Jewish Books Summer Program

Great Jewish Books at the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA opens doors
for young people from across North America. It enriches their connection
with Jewish culture, literature, and community, and inspires them to want
to learn more.
Over the course of a week, Great Jewish Books students read, discuss, argue
about, and fall in love with modern Jewish literature. They get to share
their love of reading with others, to explore Jewish culture, to build a
new community of friends, and to experience an early taste of college
campus life. To say that this program, now in its third year, is powerful
is an understatement. Students who've attended the program tell us they
leave here transformed.

Rising high school juniors and seniors are eligible to apply to Great
Jewish Books, a program of the Yiddish Book Center. *All accepted students
are given a full scholarship, covering the cost of tuition, room, board,
and "a pile of books."*

I hope that you'll take a few minutes to learn more about the program--watch
our short intro video, read our FAQs, share this information with teens you
know, and maybe even sit-down with them as they fill out our online
application.
Trust me, they will thank you for it!

*The deadline for applications is March 15.* If you have questions call
Lesley Yalen, Education Program Coordinator at 413.256.4900 x142.

What alumni have said:

*"It was the first time I met other high school students who explored new
ideas with the same depth, breadth, and energy that I did...I loved that the
conversations spilled from classroom to lunch table to dorm."* Micah, '13

*"It was the first time I really felt excited about what I was
reading!"*Matilda, '12

*"It was the first college level discussion that I'd really been engaged
in. It just seemed like everyone was so ready to jump in and learn
together." *Leah, '13

[ha-Safran] Great Jewish Books Summer Program

2014-11-17 Thread Danielle Winter
I’m writing to let you know that applications are now open for Great Jewish
Books: http://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/apply-great-jewish-books

Please spread the word among your friends, schools, synagogues, youth
groups, and communities! This year’s program will run from August 2-9, 2015.
Applications are due April 1st.

I know some of you had students who applied and didn't get in. Definitely
encourage your students to apply again, I know that the program has
accepted kids who applied twice!

Great Jewish Books continues to engage rising high school juniors and
seniors in a week-long exploration of modern Jewish literature each summer.
The program brings together an exceptional and diverse group of students,
with renowned faculty and writers, and the result is a week of grappling
with big questions, unpacking big ideas, and making new friends.

If you have questions about the program, you can contact Lesley Yalen at
the Yiddish Book Center, lya...@bikher.org. Also, I was an RA for the
program last year, so I can give some insight as well, but I am not
involved with the program this year now that my fellowship is over.

Happy Monday,

Danielle Winter

In tribute to Marcia Brown who recently passed away, I can't help but think
how much I love reading her telling of Stone Soup and then reading Stone
Soup and Matzoh Balls with my students.

[ha-Safran] Wonderful opportunity for school librarian

2015-11-30 Thread Danielle Winter
A wonderful opportunity for a librarian to discuss and write about the role
of Jewish libraries/the internet age in day schools:

HaYidion , a quarterly publication that
reaches 5000 readers in over 200 Jewish school worldwide is still accepting
submissions for their spring issue on Jewish literacy and curriculum.

Submission guidelines below; deadline: January 15.

If you have questions, you can email me: springlibrar...@gmail.com - I have
been in touch with the publication's editor.

My best,

Danielle

 Submissions Guidelines for

HaYidion: The RAVSAK Journal

Thank you for accepting the invitation to contribute an article to RAVSAK’s
quarterly journal, HaYidion. The following guidelines are designed to help
you as you think about the approach and content for an article that would
best serve the needs of our audience.

   1.

Our readership consists primarily of professional and lay leaders of
Jewish community day schools—busy people deep in the work of school
leadership. Your article should provide them with guidance, information,
and inspiration to help improve their practice, and by extension, their
   schools. Please consider these points:

   1.

Validating existing practice is useful, but more useful is telling them
something they don’t already know. Be counterintuitive; oppose current
   practice; buck trends, smash idols.
   2.

Be more prescriptive than descriptive: provide guidance; tell the
schools what they could be doing differently. The more suggestions you have
for improving the schools, and the stronger and more specific those
   suggestions, the better.
   3.

Be judiciously critical where appropriate. If you believe that schools
do a poor job at x, risk saying so. (You can be positive as well, though
   that is often less useful.)
   4.

Give them a vision of something great, whether in describing that which
currently exists or dreaming up something that could be.
   5.

The utility of each paragraph should be evident; the reader should be
able to answer the question, What does a leader of a community day school
   learn from this?
   6.

Specialized or academic language (“jargon”) should be explained. Feel
   free to use Hebrew/Jewish terms.
   7.

Normal rules of good writing apply.

2. Your article should not be about a program or school or research. It
should be about the insights you’ve learned from your program or school or
research that other schools can take away. Don’t tell us that your school
or program is great, let its greatness be apparent from the principles,
methods, pedagogical tools, etc. that you are describing. In keeping with
the old journalistic adage: “Show me; don’t tell me.”

3. Do not use footnotes. Citations should be noted parenthetically. Feel
free to include mention of useful books, articles, or websites in the body
of the article.

4. Avoid excessively lengthy lists that require indentation, such as bullet
points or numbers.

5. Pictures, graphs, and other visuals are most welcome where appropriate.

6. Length should be 1000-2000 words, unless the editor has specified
otherwise. All submissions should be made electronically, formatted in
Microsoft Word.

7. Articles are subject to revision and editing. Author changes may be
requested.

8. When submitting your article, please include:

   1.

A one sentence bio plus an email address at which readers can contact
   you.
   2.

A high-resolution digital headshot (100 dpi or greater).
   3.

Suggestion/s for a title for your article.

[ha-Safran] It's not too late to get involved with AJL!

2016-02-09 Thread Danielle Winter
The PR Committee is looking for volunteers to help spread the word about
AJL's 51st Annual Conference. We are looking for someone who 1) cares about
librarianship in general and about AJL in particular, 2) is intelligent and
well-spoken, and 3) isn't afraid of using technology (blogging, social
media, updating websites, etc).

This is especially a great opportunity for students and new librarians to
connect with members of the organization, learn about library social media
outlets and best practices.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

[ha-Safran] Looking for a couple translated poems

2016-04-14 Thread Danielle Winter
I am looking for a few Hebrew poems in English translation. This might be a
wild goose chase because I am not even sure if they have been translated or
published. Looking into it for a patron

Rahel/Rachel's poem entitled "Rahel/Rachel"
I know there is a collection of her poems:
*Flowers of Perhaps: Selected Poems of Ra'hel*
I couldn't seem to access the index or table of contents to know if this
poem is in the above collection.

Also, Shaul Tchernichovsky's poem "The Sixth of Twilight"

Mind you - there can be variation in the titles...

Thanks so much for any information,

Danielle

[ha-Safran] Yiddish literature in translation survey

2016-10-27 Thread Danielle Winter
Sharing this survey:

The folks at In Geveb are interested in learning how
teachers/museum educators use Yiddish literature in translation. Please
circulate the below survey as you see fit. Responses will be synthesized
and published on In geveb's Pedagogy Section, in a series called "Loyt di
lerers."

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSedlGPnOnQiX_4bHZkMoG5zVL4xR58_SrzF8QvPxgTPlW85cw/viewform?c=0&w=1

*In geveb* aims to be a central address for the study of all things
Yiddish—the focal point for discussions of Yiddish literature, language,
and culture, and the home for the next generation of Yiddish scholarship. *In
geveb*, which in Yiddish means “in web,” will catalyze and renew dialogue
between scholars around the world about Yiddish culture, weaving together
the voices and texts of Yiddish’s past, present, and future.

[ha-Safran] Supporting Orthodox Jewish communities in a public library

2022-04-05 Thread Danielle Winter via Hasafran
Hi everyone,

I work in a orthodox Jewish neighborhood in a public library and I am
thinking about ways to be more inclusive. These are some ideas:

- More Sunday service
- Highlighting books by Orthodox publishers/books in Yiddish/Hebrew too
- Programming that may be on chol hamoed when kids are out of school
(opposed to our typical 3PM programming for public school kids when Yeshiva
kids are still in school)
- Educating staff about Jewish holidays such as not just putting out books
for Hanukkah on display
- Outreach at a Jewish institution
- highlighting ‘clean reads’ for teens

This is just first steps of brainstorming with some others. Please let me
know if you can help me expand on these or if you have some new
considerations.

Thanks,
Danielle

[ha-Safran] New novel about Hasmonean dynasty by Judy Petsonk

2020-11-02 Thread Danielle Winter Langer via Hasafran
I am excited to announce the release of Judy Petsonk's new novel
*Justice: Maccabees and Pharisees. *
This newest novel is about how the fierce rivalry between Alexander
Janneus, King of Judea, and Shimon ben Shetakh, the leader of the
Pharisees, led to the transformation of Judaism from the Second Temple to
the rabbis of today.

The story is woven through alternating perspectives of Shimon's ex-wife and
Shimon's best friend.

*Judy is available to Zoom with synagogues and Jewish communities*, and
looks forward to hearing from you to talk about the extraordinary forgotten
women of this period in Jewish history.

You can email her directly, judypets...@optonline.net or check out her
website: https://www.judypetsonk.com/

My very best,
Danielle

[ha-Safran] book club revamp

2021-03-15 Thread Danielle Winter Langer via Hasafran
Hi!

My Jewish young professionals book club is looking into ways to diversify
our readings. I have heard of book clubs that assign monthly themes ahead
of time so not all books are about the Holocaust or not all books are
'chicklit.' (These are the two biggest recurring themes in our club and it
has dissuaded a few long-time members from attending recently while others
of course love these genres.) I am not in charge of the club, just looking
at ways to propose some changes to retain membership. Each month someone
chooses a book and leads a discussion. It's democratic in that way and I
want that to stick, but I would like to hear about book clubs that consider
a rotating theme each month in their picks (maybe more mizrahi/sephardi
stories, Jewish history that is not the Holocaust, etc.)

*If you have best practices for diversifying your book club picks, I would
love to know about them. *

Thank you,
Danielle

[ha-Safran] Talk tomorrow for Yom Hashoah

2021-04-07 Thread Danielle Winter Langer via Hasafran
Highly, highly recommending putting Noor Inayat Khan on your radar if you
are not familiar with her. Arthur Magida, author of her biography, Code
Name, Madeleine will be giving a talk tomorrow. Although Noor wasn’t Jewish
her story and courage during WWII is not one to miss. (She was engaged to a
Jewish musician if that counts for Jewish association.) She has given me so
much hope. The author is wonderful and beautifully tells Noor’s story. If
you are around tomorrow I recommend this program.

*

To commemorate Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), join us 7 pm,
Thursday, April 8 for a Zoom talk/discussion on Noor Inayat Khan, the
centerpiece of my book, CODE NAME MADELEINE: A SUFI SPY IN NAZI-OCCUPIED
PARIS.
What motivated a spiritually inclined young woman to fight Nazis? What
accounts for her incredible courage? We'll find out...
Sponsored by Am Kolel Jewish Renewal Community, Washington DC.
