Re: [ha-Safran] Bookless libraries

2013-01-23 Thread Eileen Polk
Rachel has voiced an epiphany I had many years ago when my oldest was in high
school - When we relied on print or broadcast media for our information it was
a much more level playing field. Whether you were in a rich school district or
a poorer one, everyone was using the same textbooks. Technology is now much
more expensive and not everyone can afford it, which really leaves those who
cannot afford computers, smartphones, etc. at a disadvantage which grows larger
each year. This is where it is so important for libraries to step in and fill
the gap, but the question is, "Where is all the money for that going to come
from?"

Should we panic that our libaries lack scrolls? Can you imagine a good
library without any scrolls? What about tablets (the small clay ones with
squiggling staff scratched on them - probably what Avraham used to use)?

Aaron

This is not an official policy statement from my employer (which, BTW,
does have both scrolls and tablets though we do lack native speakers of
sumerian to help catalog them).

The comment made at the end of the article suggested that those without the
means for technology might love to read at home, but would be out of luck
should all reading material be converted to digital form. Tablets might be lent
out, but small libraries in small communities like mine can't possibly afford
even to offer ebooks, let alone to invest in tablets. I see a disturbing class
divide here for basic access to knowledge.

Re: [ha-Safran] Subject: Archive for Yiddish papers?

2013-03-12 Thread Eileen Polk
Dear Safranim,

As I wrote to Dr. Stern, information about the history of labor may be found at
the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. The
Reuther Library is actually an extensive archives, particularly of the labor

Subject: [ha-Safran] Subject: Archive for Yiddish papers?

Dear Safranim,

I'm writing in response to Peter Stern's question about Yiddish newspaper
indices. There is no index to the American Yiddish press, unfortunately, and
the newspapers are largely on microfilm, not digitized. For European Yiddish
periodicals there is the excellent "Index of Yiddish Periodicals" from the
Jewish National and University Library (Jerusalem).

What the student can do is look for key events (strikes, laws, etc.) in labor
history and then check the Yiddish press for those dates. Another strategy is
to look at secondary sources and check the bibliography for specific article
citations. Without being able to read Yiddish, though, it is better to stick to
English sources and/or to get a Yiddish reader to help out. There may also be
books in English that contain primary sources together with the translations.
The Bintel Brief is a great resource, but does not provide the exact original
date of publication for the letters. Another primary source is interviews with
people who personally experienced the labor movement.

The Yiddish Book Center may have classes available in your area, and there are
other Yiddish learning opportunities such as the summer programs at YIVO/Bard,
Vilna, and Tel Aviv for starters.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Amanda

Hello. Pardon me for asking a question to which I am already 99.9% sure of
the answer, but I'd like to cover all my bases before replying to a student.

Friday I received this email:

Hi, my name is and I'm a labor studies student currently taking
Professor __ course on the Jewish labor movement. Professor __
recommended I contact you, because I am looking for archived articles from
some of the major yiddish newspapers of the early 20th century, in english
translation (Jewish Daily Forward, Freie Arbeiter Stimme, Tageblatt etc.).
Do you know of any archives available online or through the library that
might have this?

She is apparently asking about translations, and cannot read Yiddish. My gut
reaction was to say no. I Googled, and found nothing, and then I checked
with our resident Yiddish professor, who also said no such archive exists.

I know about "A Bintel Brief," and have found another book, "60 years of the
Jewish Daily Forward," in our library, plus some articles discussing the
role of Jews in American labor movements.

So I just want to be 100% sure before I inform her that there isn't any such
archive.

Thanks for any help!

2016-01-13 Thread Eileen Polk
I hope those of you that read the article online also read the comments. Most
of them felt the author has a very old-fashioned view of what a library really
is, and I would agree with that. Libraries and librarians serve the public in
many more ways than just recommending books; we are information professionals.
Those people who still think of us in the traditional way have probably not
been in a library in a long time. What we need to be better at is getting the
word out about how libraries can serve the public and making libraries matter
to the communities that support us.
