[ha-Safran] Typewriter advice

2017-07-02 Thread Emily Goldberg
Although we are in the process of moving to an online catalog, our library
is open on Shabbat and therefore we will still be maintaining a card
catalog. At the moment our typewriter is just about holding on and we
are now considering our options of repair or replace. Has anyone recently
purchased a typewriter? Recommendations? Experience?

Thank you.

Excuse the long post, but I would like to weigh in to this discussion
because of the similar changes going on here at Sinai Temple, which mirror
what is happening everywhere. In our case, 100 letters from people outside
our organization, especially if they had come from different cities, would
have been an interesting social experiment, but would not have changed a
 thing.

A year ago, our temple board decided that due to economic reasons beyond
their control, they decided to remove all funding for the library. It was
explained to me that due to the recession there had been a severe downturn
in donations, and, along with our major building upgrade and renovations,
the temple was in the fiscal red. Our professional staff of 4.5 employees
was cut to…zero. The library and its needs, budget, and staffing, was
handed over to the Pre-K-8 day school, because it was common knowledge that
the majority of patrons were day school students, staff, and parents. The
day school had only enough money to offer two positions to librarians and I
was retained as the day school librarian and another school librarian was
hired as associate. With my knowledge of adult sources, I was encouraged to
still help the synagogue patrons, when or if they continued to come in.

All adult programming was cut because I am now working for the school and
do programming solely related to school needs, which are considerable. (I
made the personal choice to continue with my evening adult book group
because this group has been meeting regularly for 15 years, even though the
temple did not pay me for it. It was suggested that I charge for
attendance at this group, which I rejected as absurd.) We are now in the
process of reducing our adult collection considerably, and moving these
items to the soon-to-open Sperber Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles,
which is now part of American Jewish University. I have been serving as
consultant for them, and will begin working there next year as the
community librarian. Our adult collection here will still be accessible to
all patrons, although it will be run by the school librarian and not kept
up by a professional Judaic librarian.

Since working as Sinai Akiba Academy school librarian this year, no longer
as the temple librarian, I have come away with some observations I would
 like to share:

 1. Synagogues clearly need to save money and move forward with the
things that engage the most members and cut funding from things that don’t.
Period. Sentiment is not a reason to pour money into old models of
synagogue engagement. The problem for libraries is that the decision-makers
are not seeing beyond the old model and are not offering funding for
 librarians to create new models.

 2. Protesting to the powers that be does not work when boards have
already made difficult decisions. If a library is a beloved part of an
institution, board members do not make these decisions lightly, but when
they do, they are rarely swayed to change their minds because by that time
they have heard all the sides they are going to hear and have thought it
 all through. (We had many

 Hi all,

I’m writing a proposal for buying and loading e-readers for our library.
I’ve read through the past discussions, but I’m wondering if anyone has
recent comments to add. It looks like Amazon is now offering a whispercast

administrator/librarian to control all of the content on the kindles (and
without having to put any credit card info on the device). Has anyone here
 used whispercast yet?

I’m thinking of trying putting different types of books on different
kindles…a couple with children’s books (to lend to parents!), a couple with
teen books, a couple with new fiction and biography, and maybe a couple
with classic texts. But I really want to build on others experiences. You

Re: [ha-Safran] Linking synagogue libraries

2012-05-18 Thread Emily Goldberg
Thank you all for your answers and comments. Your responsiveness
encourages me to ask one or two more questions. (No good deed goes
unpunished.)

Amalia and Arlene both asked what issues concerned me. At the very least
in order to be linked, libraries would have to be computerized and have
internet access. I don't know how many synagogue libraries currently have
arrived at this status. Does anyone have any statistics?

Eileen mentioned that several libraries in Detroit are loosely linked.
Eileen, do you happen to know what Federation's objective was in effecting
this? Is there an inter-library loan system? Are individuals permitted to
borrow from any library in the system? Wouldn't this be an issue for
participating libraries?

Jean-Claude, Yakov, and Nachum, how are the union catalogues you mention
used and who uses them?

Please forgive me. I'm not very savvy at this. I seem to be reading from
the responses that a Judaic OCLC would be a good idea. I'm trying to nail
down why.

Shabbat Shalom and thanks again.

I would like to mention to the list the existence of one of an important
Jewish Union Catalogue : the Rachel Network www.rachelnet.org

This is the common work of a group of French Jewish Libraries. It is the
result of the mutual retro conversion of the paper catalogues of the
participating libraries, with the help of the National Libraries of France
and Israel. We use ExLibris ALEPH500, and the catalogue is fully
 multilingual (Hebrew, Latin, Arabic).

Altogether, it contains more than 200 000 records (multimedia) from the
 following Libraries:
 History Museum Library)
 - Centre français des musiques juives (French Center for Jewish Music).
 - AKADEM (videos of conferences on Jewish subjects)

My colleague Guila Cooper, from the Alliance Library, will be present at
the next AJL Convention in Pasadena.

Please contact me if you are interested in joining the Rachel Network.

 Best regards to you all

Objet : Re: [ha-Safran] Linking synagogue libraries

I think we are talking about a Union catalog.

There are two smaller efforts right now, one is at the National Library of
Israel with their ULI catalog which includes most Israeli libraries and
several major Judaica libraries outside of Israel:

 http://libnet.ac.il/~libnet/uli/

The second is Avi Chai's school union catalog here:

I think that Avi Chai's effort is probably the best example.

I'm wondering if anyone sees any advantage to linking synagogue
 libraries.
I understand that this idea raises many issues, but could it bring
attention to resources that the extended Jewish community is not aware
of and excite interest? Further, could it also draw attention to
niche collections which are not getting their due?

[ha-Safran] A publicity idea

2012-03-25 Thread Emily Goldberg
I have been thumbing through Volume 16/17 of Judaica Librarianship which
recently arrived. There are two articles about distinctive library
collections. It occurs to me how little most Jewish library users know
about the existence of special collections. Would it be feasible to
develop a documentary DVD which highlighted these collections? Synagogues
are always looking for programs and this presentation would not only be
generally informative, but could be used to develop interest and awareness
of Judaica Librarianship. Further, synagogues interested in fostering
their own libraries could use this as an introduction to the particular
attributes of their own collections. Is anything like this available? Any
thoughts?
