Dear AJL members,

I am thrilled to announce that Gail Shirazi is the 2024 Fanny Goldstein Merit
Award Winner.

Serving 47 years at the Library of Congress, Gail has contributed immensely to
our community of Jewish libraries through her far-reaching collection
development efforts at LC and across other libraries, by arranging numerous
public programs in different venues, by connecting AJL members with other
colleagues, and by serving on several AJL annual conference and programming
committees. Gail’s boundless advocacy and passion are unforgettable, and her
extraordinary comradery is an inspiration to us all. Please see the attached PR
for more information.

Congratulations, Gail! We are so proud of you!!!

I thank my FGA committee members for their help in selecting such a deserving
AJL member for this prestigious award: Daniel Scheide and Aviva Rosenberg.

Please join me in congratulating Gail on her well-deserved recognition by email
and/or by attending the June annual conference in San Diego, where she will be
receiving her award.

Thank you,
Rachel

Dear Friends,

I am forwarding the below call for help from the Institute of Contemporary
Jewry at the Hebrew University to contact the Red Cross because I think it fits
in with our mission as Judaica librarians to foster access to information, in
this case any information about the condition and treatment of the Jewish
hostages in Gaza:

The Association of Jewish Libraries is an international, professional
organization that fosters access to information and research in all forms of
media relating to all things Jewish.

Here is the mission statement of the International Committee of the Red Cross:

The ICRC's Mission Statement
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral
and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to
protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations
of violence and to provide them with assistance.

The ICRC also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening
humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.

Established in 1863, the ICRC is at the origin of the Geneva Conventions and
the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It directs and
coordinates the international activities conducted by the Movement in armed
conflicts and other situations of violence.

For anyone who objects to my sharing this call for help, I ask you to please
understand the non-political and humanitarian purpose of this posting.

Thank you.

The Association of Jewish
Libraries
(AJL) is proud to announce that longtime member Rachel Leket-Mor has been
named the 2023 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award Winner. The award, named for the
librarian, social activist, and founder of National Jewish Book Month, is
bestowed in recognition of loyal and ongoing contributions to the AJL and to
the profession of Judaica librarianship.

Rachel Leket-Mor began her career as a Hebrew language editor at publishing
houses in Israel. She edited translated fiction, scholarly articles, and
monographs, mostly related to Jewish history, political science, and holocaust
studies, in collaboration with authors, translators, and in-house editors. She
began at Arizona State University (ASU) Library in 2002, first as the Jewish
studies bibliographer, building collections, supporting curriculum and
research, and providing specialized reference assistance. After two years in
this position, she worked as a subject librarian for Jewish studies, religious
studies, philosophy, and medieval and Renaissance studies until 2017 and is
currently the open stack collections curator. In this role, she provides
leadership for the selection, management, and disposition of print collections
and openly accessible resources. She also works with, trains, and guides
selectors on purchasing materials. She holds two master’s degrees, a Master in
Information Resources and Library Science from University of Arizona and an MA
in Translation Studies from Tel Aviv University.

Rachel’s involvement with the AJL began when she joined the Association in 2003
as a new Judaica librarian. Her professional involvement in the Association
began in 2007, when she co-chaired that year’s annual conference in Scottsdale,
Arizona, with Haim Gottschalk. The following year, she was elected vice
president of AJL’s Research, Archives, and Special Collections Division (RAS),
serving alongside RAS President Jim Rosenbloom (2008–2010). As RAS president
(2010–2012), she collaborated with Schools, Synagogues, and Centers Division
President Joyce Levine to conduct a member survey to study trends in Judaica
libraries and anticipate future developments across the AJL divisions. The
survey results, including the number of librarians in AJL libraries, their
educational level, age and years of service, and retirement plans, were used in
AJL strategic and leadership organizational planning. Rachel served on several
AJL strategic planning committees, from 2008 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2016, and
has served on the AJL Council since 2007 and on the Association’s Constitution
and Bylaws Committee since 2022.

In 2012, Rachel became the editor of Judaica Librarianship, AJL’s peer-reviewed
journal. A year later, she transferred the print-only publication to electronic
publishing, set up the electronic platform and a new peer-review process,
designed a new textual “nusaḥ,” and acquired the Adobe InDesign skills needed
for the production of scholarly works. She arranged for each issue to become
open access 12 months after publication and moved the journal to complete open
access when shifting it to a new electronic platform with the Open Journal
Systems in early 2020. Opening the journal to all resulted in a significantly
increased number of readers and better exposure

2021-01-11 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca via Hasafran
Dear all,

I’m posting this in case of interest, or in case you know of anyone who might
be interested. It is not a Judaica-related position and it would best suit
someone with rare books knowledge and experience in children’s literature;
nevertheless, there are some books for Jewish children in the collection.

Kind regards,
Rebecca Jefferson

POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Curator, Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature
Assistant University Librarian or Associate University Librarian

The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida seek a
collaborative, curious and knowledgeable colleague to lead the Baldwin Library
of Historical Children's Literature. The Curator of the Baldwin Library of
Historical Children’s Literature is a year-round (12 month) tenure track
library faculty position, which will lead a preeminent collection known for its
exceptional breadth and depth in Anglo-American holdings. The Baldwin Library
supports emerging scholarship by actively diversifying its holdings and
applying a critical lens to collections and activities. Major endowments
support the Baldwin Library and its activities, enabling the Curator to
establish new directions for this renowned collection. Exciting recent
directions have included interactive technologies such as movables and games;
women in science; African-American children’s literature and materials on race;
and collaborative acquisition and instruction.

The Curator manages materials and access, from acquisition to cataloging and
digitization, and engages the UF campus and beyond through instruction,

The Curator deepens and expands support for the study of children’s literature
and interdisciplinary topics, and engages with faculty, students, and the
Center for Children’s Literature and

scholars, librarians and educators in the Baldwin Library, and serves as a
bridge between public and academic librarians through the Louise Seaman Bechtel
Fellowship. Previous Curators have forged important regional, national and
international partnerships or created major open access digital collections. We
look forward to hearing the next Curator’s vision for the Baldwin Library and
supporting the Curator in achieving great success.

The Libraries encourage faculty and staff participation in reaching management
decisions, and consequently the Curator of the Baldwin Library will serve on
various committees and teams. To support all students and faculty, and foster
excellence in a diverse and collaborative society, the Libraries actively seek
candidates who bring culturally-rich lived experiences and awareness to work
with individuals of different backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities,
genders, sexual orientation, and perspectives. Alongside the Special and Area

[ha-Safran] Call for Papers

2018-06-20 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca
Posted by Rebecca Jefferson in case of interest …

CALL FOR PAPERS:

JEWS AND THE AMERICAS: THE 68TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE CENTER FOR LATIN
AMERICAN STUDIES JOINTLY SPONSORED BY THE ALEXANDER GRASS CHAIR IN JEWISH
STUDIES AND THE ISSER AND RAE PRICE LIBRARY OF JUDAICA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
FLORIDA.

FEBRUARY 24-46, 2019

This multidisciplinary conference aims to explore various facets of the Jewish
experience in the Americas from the 16th century until today. This experience
has been shaped by intra-religious developments as well as through relations –
actual, spiritual, and imaginary – with Jewish communities outside the
Americas. It was, of course, likewise influenced by the same political,
economic, cultural, and social forces that shaped the societies of the Americas
more generally during the past five centuries.

The aim of the conference is to bring together the fields of Latin American and
Jewish studies and scholarship on North America through different disciplinary
approaches. At the same time, the organizers would also like to allow students,
UF’s academic community, and the broader public to gain new insights into the
multidisciplinary research being conducted on the Jewish experience in the
Americas.

The conference will be organized around thematic panels and will also be open
to presenters who look at any aspect of the broader topic through a comparative
or trans-national lens. The organizing committee is interested in papers and
panels that study the material cultures of Jews in the Americas; commercial and
religious networks; intellectual exchange and artistic endeavors;
trans-national/ethnic/religious diasporas, diversity, marginality, and identity
discourses in conjunction with the Jewish experience in the Americas from the
colonial period throughout the early twenty-first century. The organizers are
especially looking forward to presentations that offer fresh insights into the
cultural, intellectual, economic, and political world of the Jews of the
Americas and which challenge the dominant narratives that have shaped our
knowledge of the connection between Jews and the Americas.

Individual paper applications should include a max. 300-word abstract and CV.
Panel proposals should be limited to a 100-word description and include at
least one paper proposal. The organizers accept applications in English, the
language of the conference will be English. The deadline to apply is September
1, 2018, to our online application page at
https://ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5ASw0DDVGVpWmQB

All applicants will be notified no later than October 15, 2018.

The organizers will cover travel and lodging expenses for participants.

For additional information please write to
jewsandtheamericasconfere...@uflib.ufl.edu.

[ha-Safran] One day left to submit proposals to the WCJS!!

2016-12-14 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca
Dear all,

I have one day left to submit titles for papers to the World Congress of Jewish
Studies. I haven't received any responses to my last panel idea. Another idea
was a panel to celebrate the 500th year of the publishing of Mikraot Gedolot
and the 500th anniversary of the Venice Ghetto. Alternatively, we can have a
non-themed libraries' session. But we really need at titles for least three
papers.

Please let me know asap!

And don't forget that AJL will help with registration and membership.

Kind regards,
Rebecca

Dear Safranim,

The deadline for proposals to the World Congress of Jewish Studies conference
in 2017 is rapidly approaching.

I received very few responses to my previous call for ideas, but I think it
would be great to put forward a panel within the Research Projects and
Technology Division on Open Access Resources and Digital Initiatives

I can put forward a paper on my Library's collaborative project with the
Jamaican Jewish Tombstones Research Group to create an online Jewish Jamaican
Archives database and Digital Humanities project.

Please let me know if you have something that would fit the topic of this panel.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Call for Papers for the World Congress of Jewish Studies
in 2017

Dear Safranim,

The deadline for proposals to the World Congress of Jewish Studies conference
in 2017 is in early December. We would to continue our tradition of having an
AJL panel session at this important conference.

I am attaching the WCJS posters in English and Hebrew so that you can see the
broad subject divisions. I would welcome ideas for a panel, and ideas for
individual papers.

If you would like to participate, please write to me as soon as possible before
November 30.

Many thanks,
Rebecca Jefferson

[ha-Safran] News from the Price Library of Judaica

2015-01-14 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca
News from the Price Library of Judaica at the University of Florida

SMATHERS LIBRARIES AT UF RECEIVE $500,000 NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES
CHALLENGE GRANT AWARD
One of 16 awarded nationally, the grant will support efforts to raise an
endowment to preserve and provide access to hidden and endangered Jewish
heritage materials
The University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries have received a
prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grant of $500,000
to build an endowment fund that will broaden access to humanities resources
relating to the Jewish experience in Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean.
The matching award provides a $1 match for every $3 raised.
The NEH Challenge Grant project, Repositioning Florida's Judaica Library,
will raise $1.5 million in matching funds to enable the creation of the
Endowment for Resources on Jewish Heritage in Florida, Latin America and the
Caribbean in support of strategic acquisitions, digital collection building,
outreach programs and research. Judith Russell, dean of University Libraries,
and Rebecca Jefferson, head of the Price Library of Judaica, are leading the
effort.
We are excited to be at the forefront of a project that will transform our
knowledge about the Jewish people of this region and greatly inform many other
disciplines within the humanities, Russell said.
UF alumnus and Miami entrepreneur Gary R. Gerson, who provided the first funds
to build the endowment, said he feels certain the Jewish community will be
interested in preserving the history of diasporic influences made by Jewish
people transplanted to Florida.
The NEH Challenge Grant represents a second historic award for the Libraries.
The first was in 1977, when the NEH inaugurated the Challenge Grant program for
the purchase of books and materials that established the Isser and Rae Price
Library of Judaica. Today, the Price Library is recognized as the best Jewish
Studies research collection in the southeastern United States.
This second award of $500,000 recognizes that with the Price Library as its
foundation, the University of Florida is singularly well-suited to lead a new
national and international effort to acquire resources that will promote and
support greater study of the Jewish diaspora in the region.
To support this exciting challenge award and contribute to the Endowment for
Resources on Jewish Heritage in Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean fund,
please contact Kathleen Boudreau, director of development at the George A.
Smathers Libraries at boudr...@ufl.edumailto:boudr...@ufl.edu or
352-273-2505. To discuss opportunities to donate materials to the Jewish
Diaspora Collection (JDoC) at UF, please contact Rebecca Jefferson at

Re: [ha-Safran] Holocaust Torah Scrolls at university libraries?

2014-05-13 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca

Dear Safranim,

FYI: another one of these Czech memorial scrolls is also held at Florida
International University.

This query leads me to post another related question: at the University of
Florida we have a Torah scroll in our collection identified by the Machon OT
institute as having been produced in Russia in 1934. Its script type, AriZal,
suggests that it came from a Chassidic community. I don't have any information
to tell me how it got to the United States, I only know that it was purchased
from Chicago in the 1970s or 80s for a synagogue in Jacksonville, FL (now
closed), but it is not described anywhere as a Holocaust Torah. Can anyone
tell me anything more about Torah Scroll production at that time? Were scrolls
commissioned from Eastern Europe for use in the US, or should I assume that its
provenance means that it was rescued at some point?

Thanks!
Rebecca

Shalom from Los Angeles! Do any of you know of Sifre Torah saved from the

recently received one as a gift. Any others?

[ha-Safran] Interesting position vacancy at the University of Florida!

2013-08-23 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca
Dear friends,

We're looking to fill an important position in the University of Florida
Libraries, and I'm posting this to the listserv in case any of you know of a
potential candidate and, if so, to see if you would be willing to pass this
information along to them or forward their name and contact information to me.

As you may have heard, we are currently recruiting for the Chair of the
Department of Special and Area Studies Collections. This is an exciting tenure
track position in a unique department comprising regionally, nationally and
internationally recognized collections, including the Baldwin Library of
Historical Children's Literature, the Latin American Collection, the P.K. Yonge
Library of Florida History and the Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica. More
information about our department and collections can be found here:
http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/spec/ .

The ideal candidate for this position will provide enthusiastic leadership,
strategic vision and direction for the department, blending traditional
academic library practices with innovation to expand our collections and usage,
redesign our spaces, and increase available resources. An MLS degree is
preferred, but an equivalent advanced degree is also acceptable; demonstrated
leadership experience is desired, but we would willingly consider someone with
less experience who can show that they have great potential.

A detailed description of the duties and qualifications for this position can
be found at http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/pers/documents/ChairSASC-FINAL2.pdf

Any assistance you can offer would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Rebecca

[ha-Safran] Theater performance based on Judaica library materials

2013-04-18 Thread Jefferson, Rebecca
Dear Safranim,

Perhaps you would be interested to watch a theater performance uniquely
created at the University of Florida based on selections from the holdings of
the Price Library of Judaica.

A Handful Of Leaves: Immigrant Stories is a devised theater piece, directed by
Kevin Marshall, professor at the UF School of Theater + Dance, performed by UF
students, and accompanied by audio-visuals created by the Digital Worlds
Institute. The production focuses on the incredible stories of Dr. Emanuel
Merdinger and Leah Stupniker, and explores moments in the lives of these
individuals, based on their memoirs and journals. The show was created to
highlight the importance of personal artifacts, and to connect potential donors
of these artifacts with the library system at the University of Florida. We
attempt to use these stories to illustrate their importance in understanding
the history and experience of immigration to the United States.
The show is streamed live every evening from 7.30-9.00pm (EST), here:
http://digitalworlds.ufl.edu/handfulofleaves/index.html

The works that inspired the production include the scarce publication
Komets-'alim le-zekher Le'ah Stupniker (http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00103481/1)
and an unpublished memoir of a Holocaust survivor, Dr. Emanuel Merdinger
(http://ufdc.ufl.edu/AA4966/1).

Best wishes,
Rebecca
