The Association of Jewish
Libraries
(AJL) is proud to announce that longtime member Rachel Leket-Mor has been
named the 2023 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award Winner. The award, named for the
librarian, social activist, and founder of National Jewish Book Month, is
bestowed in recognition of loyal and ongoing contributions to the AJL and to
the profession of Judaica librarianship.

Rachel Leket-Mor began her career as a Hebrew language editor at publishing
houses in Israel. She edited translated fiction, scholarly articles, and
monographs, mostly related to Jewish history, political science, and holocaust
studies, in collaboration with authors, translators, and in-house editors. She
began at Arizona State University (ASU) Library in 2002, first as the Jewish
studies bibliographer, building collections, supporting curriculum and
research, and providing specialized reference assistance. After two years in
this position, she worked as a subject librarian for Jewish studies, religious
studies, philosophy, and medieval and Renaissance studies until 2017 and is
currently the open stack collections curator. In this role, she provides
leadership for the selection, management, and disposition of print collections
and openly accessible resources. She also works with, trains, and guides
selectors on purchasing materials. She holds two master’s degrees, a Master in
Information Resources and Library Science from University of Arizona and an MA
in Translation Studies from Tel Aviv University.

Rachel’s involvement with the AJL began when she joined the Association in 2003
as a new Judaica librarian. Her professional involvement in the Association
began in 2007, when she co-chaired that year’s annual conference in Scottsdale,
Arizona, with Haim Gottschalk. The following year, she was elected vice
president of AJL’s Research, Archives, and Special Collections Division (RAS),
serving alongside RAS President Jim Rosenbloom (2008–2010). As RAS president
(2010–2012), she collaborated with Schools, Synagogues, and Centers Division
President Joyce Levine to conduct a member survey to study trends in Judaica
libraries and anticipate future developments across the AJL divisions. The
survey results, including the number of librarians in AJL libraries, their
educational level, age and years of service, and retirement plans, were used in
AJL strategic and leadership organizational planning. Rachel served on several
AJL strategic planning committees, from 2008 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2016, and
has served on the AJL Council since 2007 and on the Association’s Constitution
and Bylaws Committee since 2022.

In 2012, Rachel became the editor of Judaica Librarianship, AJL’s peer-reviewed
journal. A year later, she transferred the print-only publication to electronic
publishing, set up the electronic platform and a new peer-review process,
designed a new textual “nusaḥ,” and acquired the Adobe InDesign skills needed
for the production of scholarly works. She arranged for each issue to become
open access 12 months after publication and moved the journal to complete open
access when shifting it to a new electronic platform with the Open Journal
Systems in early 2020. Opening the journal to all resulted in a significantly
increased number of readers and better exposure to AJL. For the journal’s
fortieth anniversary this year, she has led an AJL volunteer team in a project
to upload the remainder of the journal’s back issues, following prior success
with making volumes 9–16/17 available online.

Lisa Silverman, award committee chair, commented, “On behalf of the Fanny
Goldstein Merit Award committee, we are proud to have the opportunity to honor
Rachel Leket-Mor as this year’s recipient of the Award. Rachel has contributed
so much to AJL, to the field of Judaica librarianship, and to librarianship as
a profession overall. Her work on the AJL journal Judaica Librarianship has
been invaluable to the organization. Rachel personifies the values and legacy
of the Award’s namesake, Fanny Goldstein, who devoted her life to books and her
community.” Rachel will receive her award on Monday, June 19, 2023, at the
Annual Conference of the Association of Jewish Libraries, which will be held
virtually this year. Information about the conference is

We are resurrecting our once popular “Chinese Dinner & a Movie” event this year
on December 22. I am looking for a light, fun film to show at the synagogue
that will appeal to a mostly older crowd of empty-nesters, active retirees and
seniors. Could be a feature film or a documentary; comedy or something in the
“edu-tainment” category; Jewish content but NOT Holocaust; preferably in
English but sub-titles are OK too. In the past we showed Dreaming of a Jewish
Christmas, Fiddler, Dough and Land of Milk & Honey. We also showed The New Jew
during the pandemic and that was a hit so an episode or two from a series could
work as well. We don’t want to conflict with our local JCC and Israeli film
festivals so I’m thinking maybe there is an older/classic film that would be
fun to revisit.

Please let me know if you have any “tried & true” suggestions that fit the
above requirements for this event.

Thanks!

Subject: Biblical Scholars Needed for Book

Dear Librarians:

As a Professor at Arizona State University I produced over 60 publications. Now
I am writing a book that will be reviewed for publication by Christian Faith
Publishing. My reason for writing is that I need to collaborate with biblical
scholars that can help me write scriptural references for each chapter. I would
appreciate your willingness to work with me.

My book focuses on critical thinking, problem solving, listening, verbal and
visual literacy, developing new ideas and inventions, and achieving goals. I
focus on character principles such as hard work. excellence, moral and ethical
values, and temperament.

I tell a true story in each chapter that illustrates a major idea. For
example: aim for quality and excellence in what you create and deliver for
others.

This is a key component of the text because the idea is to let the reader know
scripture provides ways for them to succeed in these and other areas.

Please let me know if you can agree to work with me on this endeavor. Of
course you will receive credit for your contribution to the text.

Many thanks and best wishes. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am possibly looking to buy a set of Hebrew-English Illustrated Talmud. Does
a set exist for purchase? Where do I buy it and an approximate price would be
nice.
I have the Soncino English Talmud set in my Reform Synagogue Library.

I also have the Code of Jewish Law set, Midrash Rabbah set, Encyclopedia
Judaica 2nd edition, and Encyclopedia of Biblical Interpretation set. What
other reference sets should I be stocking in my library? I may have a donation
of a new reference book set of my choice by a congregant and his wife.

Re: [ha-Safran] Where to find out of print DVDs of Israeli films & digital access to Israeli films

2022-02-10 Thread Kolodney, Uri via Hasafran
Hi Dan,
Some out of print titles could be found on Amazon and eBay. As far as licensing
films in streaming, those are not cheap, and will never be. The prevalent price
for a copy with perpetual rights is anywhere between $300 to $600.

Best regards,

Dear Colleagues,

We are helping a librarian we work with to source out of print DVDs of Israeli
films; they also need advice for licensing digital access to Israeli films that
don't cost an arm and a leg.

Any suggestions are very appreciated!

Dear AJL,

A former student of mine is looking for a CD I used to own in my library. It
must have been in the mid to late 1990s. I don’t recall the name but I do
recall that among it’s various stories was the children’s picture book Wempires
written and then narrated by Daniel Pinkwater.

When she first asked me I thought it was the multiple CD set of Jewish Stories
that was done by Leonard Nimoy but when I searched that I realized was for
adults not kids. Might there be someone on Hasafran who remembers the deep past

and can recall the title of the CD? Who knows if it is still available
(probably not) but I told her I would try. I realize this is a shot in the
dark since it has been more than 20 years but…the collective minds of
librarians is an awesome resource.

Hello Hebrew-studies-affiliated friends!

I am in a Hebrew-related conundrum I have on my hands a 300+ page
Hebrew-language dissertation on ... (the topic of my senior Honors thesis at
Tufts), which I was gifted kindly by its author at Hebrew University.
Unfortunately, the author refused to give me a digital copy (perhaps due to
fear of plagiarism?) so I have scanned the whole paper copy to take home over
vacation.

I recently realized I’d be able to use the work best if OCR’d (read digitally)
and translated, at least roughly, so that I can understand which sections are
most important to read in the original. I don’t, however, have Adobe Premium,
and all other OCR services (at least those I’ve used so far!) seem not to
really work on Hebrew texts. Do you have suggestions for an OCR or
OCR/translation app/website that can handle Hebrew, ideally in large
quantities? If not for your own personal use, do you know what students in the
field use?

Any help is appreciated! ...

Hello Safranim,

It's been a while in coming but AJLSC (with most of the work done by Ellen
Cole, President) has once again compiled a wonderful list of the best books of
2016, which is now available exclusively on the AJLSC webpage. Please click
here http://www.ajlsc.org/links.php to read or download our yearly list and
make as many copies as you would like. We offer an adult list of fiction and
non-fiction, and a children's list of picture books, middle grade books, and YA.

In order to remain relevant into the coming year, the lists are entitled, "A
Selected List of Recent Books for 2017" -and all books have a 2016 copyright.
They serve as useful handouts at Jewish libraries.

The lists will also be available on the AJL homepage shortly.

Enjoy!

Re: [ha-Safran] IFLA map of the world and Israel

2017-11-29 Thread Kolodney, Uri
Interesting. It seems that the map is populated only by "Contributors [map
represents all organizations] that have shared library performance metrics or
SDG stories with us, such as national library associations, national libraries,
individual libraries, and library support organizations." - click on the
Contributors tab.
So it seems to me that only the University of Haifa library took the time to
contribute their data, while the Palestinians did a better job and their
contributor (Palestinian libraries and Information Association) sent a
comprehensive list of 101 libraries... :)
Maybe someone at the National Library of Israel or ASMI (the Israeli librarians
organization) would pick this up.

I would not get close to any website that has “xyz” in its URL….
My firewall at the university didn’t even open the page when I clicked on it.

Has anybody ever used the site http://www.ebooksdownloads.xyz? It claims to
offer free pdf or epub downloads of books, but the title I am looking at is
definitely in copyright. I'm worried that it's something fishy that will give
me a virus. If you've successfully used it, please let me know.

Re: [ha-Safran] malware problems with Jewish Internet Guide?

2017-09-26 Thread Kolodney, Uri
Yes, but only on FireFox. ("This web page at www.jewishinternetguide.com has
been reported as an attack page and has been blocked based on your security
preferences. Attack pages try to install programs that steal private
information, use your computer to attack others, or damage your system. Some
attack pages intentionally distribute harmful software, but many are
compromised without the knowledge or permission of their owners.")

Works fine on IE and Chrome. I guess they have less restrictive configuration
or something.

Ah, this is a fine list. If the weather be good, you can't beat the
Metropolitan Museum's rooftop exhibit now - Adrián Villar Rojas sculptures in
The Theater of Disappearance, which ArtNet calls a raucous party, plus the
spectacular views from there, and the beauty of then walking in Central Park
itself.
Best,

Dear Safranim,

The programs are printed, the bags are about to be packed, the schedule is

1. Trip Advisor
(https://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g60763-c170529/New-York-City:New-York:General.Tips.On.Nyc.Trip.html)
has a great listing of "tips and tricks" to navigate the city, including
helpful pieces of advice (DON'T BEND THE METROCARD!). They also have a top ten
list:

2. If you're interested in amazing kosher pizza, try Bravo's Pizza on 37th and
Broadway (http://www.bravokosherpizza.com). [This is my personal preference;
others might chime in and disagree!]

3. Time Out New York (https://www.timeout.com/newyork) is a fantastic resource
for things to do and places to go.

4. Want to go to a show at the last minute? Download the todaytix app to see
what's available. Those of you who bought tickets to the Tony-winning
Indecent are the lucky ones! The show is closing at the end of June, so if
you're still interested in going, you might want to hurry up and see if there
are any left!

5. The High Line (http://www.thehighline.org/), a former railroad line that was
transformed into a park, is a great place to visit between the hotel and HUC.
It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street,
between 10th and 12th Avenues.

6. Chelsea Market (http://www.chelseamarket.com/) is another fun place to visit
for an incredible taste of the city's gastronomic diversity.

7. But what about BOOKS? The Strand Bookstore (http://www.strandbooks.com/),
with its "18 miles of books" is located just a few blocks up from HUC at the
corner of 12th and Broadway. They have a rare book section as well. A warning
- it is VERY difficult to leave this store without purchasing anything.

8. The New York Public Library's grand mid-Manhattan building is located at
42nd St. and 6th Avenue (https://www.nypl.org/). If you go, be sure to stop in
at the Jewish Division on the main floor!

Do you have any questions about your visit? Reply here, and our local team
(and those who are like locals) would be happy to help!

New Yorkers (or NY lovers) what else is not to be missed?

See you very soon!

There are multi region (aka "region free") DVD players out there for as low as

Subject: [ha-Safran] remote control

Dear Safranim,

I have an old Daewoo DV-1091 PAL DVD player. I need to play a PAL DVD and I
need to activate the subtitles on the DVD. I do not have a remote control unit
and there are no controls on the DVD player (only play, stop fast forward and
reverse and eject) to allow me to activate the subtitles. I know I can play
this DVD on my computer, but I need to use the DVD player in this instance and
I need to activate the subtitles.
I tried to buy a universal remote control but it would not accept the
programing to allow me to activate the subtitles.
Can anyone offer any suggestions that would be useful?

Thank you in advance.

Shalom,
I received a call from Barbara Alper who serves at the Strier Library in Temple
Beth Tikvah in Greenacres, FL,
I could feel that she was in tears. Their building is infested with termites.
The exterminator said that they have to throw away all the books that were
collected with great love.
They have about 3000 titles.
Is there a way to save the books ? Please reply to the list and to Barbara at

Thanks Dov, the phone number you have given is an Israeli number. We were using
an English site out of the U.S. I have just returned from a month in Israel
where I purchased a many more of her books and other Hebrew books for the
school through Tsomet Sfarim and steimatzky's. But had counted on the 20 we
ordered thru her English site to come from there. If you look on the English
site, it does indeed mention Kar-Ben and Amazon in regards to ordering when I
first held you in English, but if you scroll to the bottom of the page, do you
not see "purchasing Mirik snir's books" with a link to blue white direct?
I will try the email you have sent for Mirik and see if she has had this
problem before.
Thanks
Karen

The two order links in the English site now are either to Kar-Ben

Maybe the site was hacked when the order you mention was posted

lists its location in Englewood N.J. The company was very quick to charge her

Dear Friends,

My Library Committee co-chair and I are presenting a program on newer Israeli
fiction authors - and those new to us (translated into English), as part of
our efforts to create wider use of the Library.
He will discuss mysteries and I will talk about novels and short stories.
We’ve developed a solid bibliography of books, which we hope to annotate, and
have a donation that will cover the cost of purchasing most of those not
already in our collection.

In preparing my part of the talk, I’ve been looking for articles on
contemporary Israeli literature and haven’t had much luck.

Can anyone recommend any articles talking about trends in contemporary Israeli
literature?

Thanks very much,

One can assume there were Palestinian libraries (and there were...) in the 1970
or the 1980 in the West Bank and Gaza, but they WERE NOT "looted" by Israelis
or by anyone else.
In 1948 when Israel fought for its independence and against armies of 7 Arab
states, there was much devastation of homes in the Arab/Jordanian part of
Jerusalem. Depending on whom you listen to, either many books belonging to the
Arab residents were saved from toppling houses and brought to the Hebrew
University Library that eventually joined with the Israel National Library for
safekeeping (Israeli version), or were callously stolen by the Israelis to
"erase Arab culture" (Palestinian version)
Your researcher would be wise to go to the sources that describe the
collections and the provenance that reside in the National Library of Israel,
as well as catch up on regional history

[ha-Safran] New online shop on the National Library of Israel website

2015-06-11 Thread Kolodney, Uri
Not sure if this was featured here or not, so apologies for duplicate posting.
Anyway, last month I had the pleasure to attend the Info 2015 conference in
Jerusalem and to talk to some very nice people from the National Library of
Israel who presented their new online shop at the NLI booth. One nice feature
is the option to purchase prints of maps, photographs and manuscripts. For the
collection curators among us, a few books and catalogs are available as well.

[ha-Safran] Potentially beneficial sessions at INFO 2015 -- May 11, 2015, Jerusalem

2015-02-17 Thread Kolodney, Uri
This year the INFO conference by Teldan will be held both in Jerusalem and Tel
Aviv. There is an interesting "Yom 'iyun" (seminar) dedicated to Israel studies
and Jewish studies information resources. This seminar will be held (in Hebrew)
at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Jerusalem on Monday, May 11, 9am to 5pm. There
are many other seminars and sessions. See
http://www.teldan.com/info2015/agenda.html .
I will be attending as a UT participant, and will be happy to report back in
AJL News.
I was asked by the organizers to distribute this information among Ha-Safran
subscribers.
A direct link to the seminar on May 11 can be found here:

Re: [ha-Safran] Worldcat Discovery Services replacing Firstsearch - experience? reactions? (RAS)

2014-12-11 Thread Kolodney, Uri
UT Libraries will probably be moving to Discovery, but I don’t know when. Our
bibliographic database management team is dealing with it and it’s on their
radar. I had a conversation with OCLC a couple of weeks ago regarding the
‘limiting’ functionality on FirstSearch that sometimes works and sometimes it
doesn’t. They said it’s a ‘glitch’ in FirstSearch and since Discovery is coming
up soon, they are not going to fix it… great customer service ;-)

Subject: [ha-Safran] Worldcat Discovery Services replacing Firstsearch -
experience? reactions? (RAS)

Hi All,

It seems that OCLC will be discontinuing Firstsearch at the end of 2015, and in
its place, has created Worldcat Discovery Services
(https://oclc.org/worldcat-discovery.en.html) - which is basically a souped up
version of worldcat.org. It loses much of the
functionality of Firstsearch, and any return to functionality (at least those
that they are willing to make), are considered "enhancements" and will add to
cost.

Has this come up at any other institutions? How are people dealing with it?
Perhaps this is something that should be discussed at AJL?

Does anyone know if the courtesy membership extended to AJL members by CLCD is
still available? I recently tried to log in and got a message that my log on
was inactive. I did write in April and ask about whether the courtesy
subscription was still being offered. I haven't received any response.

[ha-Safran] LC call numbers range list??

Everybody knows that Spring break is a great time for 'doing statistics'!
I'm finally trying to figure out exactly how many items my collection holds -

I'm searching by LC number range (BM... BS... DS... PJ...etc.), but am
wondering if someone already did something similar and have a detailed list
they use??

Hi Everyone -

Our library just had its annual Community Read yesterday and since we had it in
the auditorium in the JCC we wanted to find a way to still show off the library
space. We ended up filming a quick commercial that we debuted before the author
spoke. I wanted to share it with the group. Watch it at the link below and
enjoy!

Thanks,
Nina

PS - Our author was Dara Horn and we had about 200 people in the room.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Judaica Librarianship online

Dear colleagues,
On behalf of Judaica Librarianship's Editorial Board, I am pleased to announce
that AJL's peer-reviewed journal is now available online, at
http://ajlpublishing.org.
The site currently features the most recent issue of Judaica Librarianship
(vol. 16/17). According to our new policy, back issues will be freely available
12 months after the publication date.
Judaica Librarianship provides a forum for scholarship on the theory and
practice of Jewish Studies librarianship and Information Studies. The journal
seeks to publish research articles and essays related to the development and
management of Judaica collections in all types of libraries and archives, the
initiation and coordination of digital curation projects, the creation and
dissemination of information resources in all formats, and the promotion of
Jewish information literacy for diverse audiences through various outreach
activities. The Editorial Board also welcomes thoroughly revised and updated
versions of papers presented at AJL Annual Conferences or chapter meetings.

Dear Safranim,

Any suggestions for a way to say in Hebrew, "Library Assistants?" Our student
teachers are called "Madrichim, " and I'd like to have a Hebrew name for the
high school students who help me in the library on Sunday mornings. It doesn't
have to literally mean "library assistants," but should convey that they'll be
working in the library, working with media and tech equipment, too, etc.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Ann

Re: [ha-Safran] Looking for a list

2013-04-28 Thread Kolodney, Uri
Did you look at Cutter's book?
Judaica reference sources : a selective, annotated bibliographic guide /
Charles Cutter.
3rd rev. and expanded ed., Westport, Conn. : Libraries Unlimited, c2004.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, Michelle Chesner from Columbia had a similar
question on this list a couple of years ago, when she had to come up with a
list for her collection. I copy her here as well.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Looking for a list

Dear Safranim,

I am doing a recon project at the library of my synagogue. This project will
also involve reclassifying the books and doing an evaluation of the collection
to determine the library's strengths and weaknesses. Currently, I am doing an
evaluation of only the rabbinic collection. I would like to build up the
library's core rabbinic collection. My question is: Even though I have an
idea of what the core rabbinic collection ought to look like (based on my
experience of working in Judaic collections and personal learning) and could
develop and ad hoc list, I would like to know if a list of core rabbinic titles
has ever been published?

Thank you,
Haim
