[ha-Safran] Great book on Israel for H.S./young adults

2021-11-11 Thread Petite Safranit via Hasafran
Noa Tishby, noted actress, director, and producer has written an amazing
book on why Israel is viewed in a negative light and judged by a double
standard. She weaves documented, true history with her own accounts of
growing up in Tel Aviv and her life in the leftist environment of
Hollywood. She untwists the lies and misinformation on social media, &
journalism with facts. Do you know the difference between Hamas,
Hezbollah, and the Palestinian Authority? There are big differences and
she tells you what they are. She writes that Israel is not perfect and
has many things to improve upon. Being a Zionist and/or a Jew is not a
demonic thing and the destruction of Israel can and will never happen.
Great book for everyone to read.

If you google Jewish science fiction story collections books you will
find a number of them. I have read a few of them but do not remember
such a story. I will continue to search.

takes great photos with excellent commentary. The name of the blog is

her last reporting she had to stay in Tel Aviv for a few days due to the
bombing from Gaza and she writes and photographs what was happening

Your synagogues, community centers, local newspapers, and schools may

[ha-Safran] Peony by Pearl S. Buck

2021-05-11 Thread Petite Safranit via Hasafran
Would Pearl Buck's _Peony_ be acceptable for this coming month's reads?
Has anyone read this lately?  (/Peony/(or/The Bondmaid/) is set in the
1850s in the city of Kaifeng, in the province of Henan, which was
historically a center for Chinese Jews. The novel follows Peony, a
Chinese bondmaid of the prominent Jewish family of Ezra ben Israel's,
and shows through her eyes how the Jewish community was regarded in
Kaifeng at a time when most of the Jews had come to think of themselves
as Chinese)

as read-alouds.

/Daniel's Story, /by Carol Matas/,(/Daniel, whose family suffers as

There is an exhibit in the United States Holocuast Memorial Museum in

I would like to add books by Kathy Kacer to this list. She is a
Canadian author who has written a number of quality historic fiction

and death.
1970 - The Cigarette Sellers of Three Crosses Square - Ziemian
1970 - Journey to America (and further two others in series) -
Levitin [Similar to Kerr's books]. Subject deals with escape.
1971 - When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (and further two others in
series) - Kerr [Similar to Levitin's books]. Subject deals with

1971 - Friedrich - Richter. Originally published in German in

the end. Deals with living in Germany under increasing restrictions.

1972 - I am Rosemarie - Moskin
1972 - The Upstairs Room - Reiss
1973 - To Fight In Silence - Wuorio
1973 - A Pocket full of Seeds - Sachs
1973 - Uncle Misha's Partisans - Suhl

1975 - On the Other Side of the Gate - Suhl
1976 - Never to Forget: The Jews of the Holocaust - Meltzer

2007 - The Book Thief - Zasuk

similar in nature. They both deal with the topic of
escape/refugees, (a topic that is à propos these days,) and each

namely the story is being told from a Gentile German's eyes, (and not
in the eyes of the Jewish victims,) and that the death of the Jewish
protagonist happens "on screen." It must have been very daring back
when it was first published. I wonder if this book would be better if
the class is primarily non-Jewish. Perhaps reading a Holocaust book
from the Jewish perspective would give them a certain "detachment" as
if it's just another point in history to have to study. However, by
reading a book in the eyes of someone like them (non-Jew,) it may
prompt deeper questions such as "Would I have participated if I were I
living then?" I also read "Devil's Arithmetic" (1988 - Yolen) and
"Number the Stars" (1989 - Lowry) when they came out because I was a
YA then. Yolen's might appeal to the "science-fictiony" reader in the
way she "transports" the modern reader to the time of the Holocaust,
instead of simply placing the story wholly in that era. I am looking
forward to rereading them. I saw the movie Boy in the Striped Pajamas
(2006) when it came out, and will look forward to actually reading the
book. It should be noted that the book is criticized in some circles
for being factually incorrect -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_in_the_Striped_Pyjamas. Also,
the author is not Jewish -
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/oct/03/john-boyne-novelist-catholic-church-abuse-priesthood-boy-in-striped-pyjamas.
This fact may/may not matter to you. However, there is the issue of
"cultural approbation" which has been a hot issue in our profession
(librarianship) of late (see discussion on the recent (non-Holocaust)
bestseller "American Dirt.") It might be, depending on your audience
and the lesson, a topic worthy of discussion that you actually /want
/to wade into anyway!

Google "videos for children on the Holocaust" or "Holocaust videos for
elementary ( and middle school) school children". There is a lot out
there - lesson plans, presentations, all on tape. You can get ideas from
any of them. Good luck.

We are planning a school-wide (K-8) ceremony for Yom Ha-Shoah this
year since learning is remote. We normally have a lower school
commemoration for grades 2-4, run by the 4th graders who present a
Powerpoint on either Janusz Korczak or Hannah Senesh, with some
songs they prepare. Middle school has its own stirring  ceremony
which includes the school choir, readings and  visuals.
I am reaching out to this wonderful group to see if anyone has any
ideas for making this program meaningful to all, yet age
appropriate for the younger children.
Thank you and be well.

[ha-Safran] Fwd: A free, inspiring program for high school students

2020-01-14 Thread Petite Safranit via Hasafran

Yiddish Book Center
Applications for Great Jewish Books are open.

Yiddish Book Center

Dear fellow Yid,

/“I believed in myself more” … “I learned how important my Jewish
identity is to me” … “that we have so much to learn in the modern world
from writers in the past” … “I learned more about inclusivity and being
open to everyone” … “Applying to this program is one of the best
decisions I have ever made.”/

These are just a few of the comments we’ve heard from participants of
the Yiddish Book Center’sGreat Jewish Books Summer Program
.
This year’s program, taking place July 26–31 in Amherst, Massachusetts,
will give rising high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to
discover the treasures of modern Jewish literature, explore their
identity, and connect to a vibrant culture through a wide-ranging
literary canon.

Although the program’s focus is on reading, this is not school in any
conventional sense: Great Jewish Books is a lively program full of
social, cultural, and recreational opportunities—and no grades. Students
spend mornings discussing diverse texts with college professors,
afternoons engaging in social activities, and evenings listening to
guest authors. Some of the most meaningful moments happen during the
in-between time: late-night conversations with peers, lively debates
during lunch, or lingering discussions with faculty after class. In just
five days, students make lasting friendships and return home inspired.

And the best part? /Every admitted participant receives a full
scholarship for the cost of tuition, room, board, books, and special
events./

If you know any bright, enthusiastic teens who love to read, please
encourage them to apply today
.
Applications are due *March 9*. No specific background—no knowledge of
languages or writers or Jewish religious or cultural heritage—is
required. Anyone with an interest in Jewish literature and culture is
welcome to apply. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to be in
touch.

/A sheynem dank/—thank you for helping us spread the word!

Sincerely,

Sylvia sig1.png

Education Program Manager

PS: If you know any *middle or high school teachers* looking to enrich
their curricula with modern Jewish literature, let them know about our
four-week Great Jewish Books Teacher Summer Seminar
.
Teachers can learn more here

and apply by March 9.

Re: [ha-Safran] Reply to Question 1, on lasting effects of John Chrysostom's anti-Jewish rhetoric

2019-01-13 Thread Petite Safranit via Hasafran
/Constantine's Sword/ by James Carrol is excellent. He is a Catholic
priest and writes of the history of  the Church and the Jews and the
roots of anti-semitism.  It is almost like an apology for Church
behavior throughout the ages.

1. Robert Wistrich's /A Lethal Obsession: Anti-Semitism from Antiquity

anti-Semitism.I would think that the index would take your student
directly to John Chrysostom. This is a heavy and exhaustive tome, but
I would be surprised if Wistrich, the greatest historian of
anti-Semitism of our time, did not  make a connection at some point
between the Christian roots of anti-Semitism and its mutation into Nazism.

2. Phyllis Goldstein's very accessible survey of the history of
anti-Semitism, /A Convenient Hatred: The History of Antisemitism/,
which I believe was published by the Facing History organization with
high school students in mind (but is solid and unpatronizing) does a
good job making connections between modern anti-Semitism and Christian
anti-Semitism.

3.  A book I read many years ago was Joel Carmichael's /The Satanizing
of the Jews/, published in 1993 (Fromm Intl). I don't have it at hand,
but my recollection is that it made the point that there was a turning
point in the history of Jew hatred -- a shift from classical antiquity
to the time of the early Church Fathers. This was the pivotal time
when Jews ceased being hated merely because they were different in the
way other outsiders were different (the classical form) and instead
were demonized as a cosmic force for evil. If my memory serves me
correctly, it was to John Chrysostom that the author attributed this
turn for the worse. It would be worth your student's while to check
this book out -- although I'm relying on vague memories from something
I read a couple of decades ago.

My name is Sandra Chikerotis, and I am a student at
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. I'm currently working on
my final thesis, which is about John Chrysostom and his treatment
of Jewish peoples in the 4th century. However, the conclusion of
my paper is about the lasting effects  that Chrysostom's hate
filled rhetoric produced, and I wanted to add in some things about
World War 2. I had read that Chrysostom's Against the Jews sermons
were used as nazi propaganda during the war, but I can't find any
example of this or actual reference to this that is more
substantial than mere mention. Do you have any idea where I could
find this information out?

Thank you!

Dear Lisa,
Here are photos of the Nazi materials my father brought home from
World War II.  He was a navigator who bailed out of a B-17 bomber and
was held for eleven months at Stalag Luft III, the same German POW
camp where the “Great Escape” occurred.  In addition to the materials
in the photos, I have a short  narrative written by my father about
his experiences, his Nazi prison camp registration card with photo
where he is identified as a Jew (they told him that, as a Jew, he
would be the first of the prisoners to be killed).  I also have
snapshots taken of the prisoners in the POW camp taken with a
smuggled-in camera.  My father assembled these with captions in a
scrapbook.
Ideally, these materials would be kept together and displayed.  A
condition of their accession would be that they would never be sold.
Thank you for your help!

Re: [ha-Safran] looking for out of print book

2017-03-14 Thread Petite Safranit
When I look for an out-of-print book, I check Jewishusedbooks.com first.
(they can be more expensive than other sources, so beware) then I google
the title.
I look up each suggestion, compare prices and then go to Amazon to see
their USED book prices for the title. It is usually a flat $3.99
shipping but I have ordered many way below list price (sometimes 99%
off) for titles I am searching for. I find that Eichler's and Israel
Book Store in Boston are rarely well priced. If you do go through retail
stores, ALWAYS ask for a non-profit, or synagogue discount. Good luck!

Re: [ha-Safran] recommendations

2011-11-29 Thread Petite Safranit
/Blazing Saddles/ is NOT a "Jewish" comedy. Mel Brooks throws in the
Yiddish and Yiddish accents but this is NOT in any way Jewish or fit for
total family viewing. /Frisco Kid/, on the other hand, is an EXCELLENT
Jewish movie showing devotion to Torah and mitzvot, yet there are scenes
not suitable for all family members (the saloon scenes, the desecration
of the Torah, the attempted barrel bashing of the Rabbi...)

But, you were likely referring to other scenes, such as Madeline

to Baltimore. And there is always "Fiddler on the Roof." I would google
"Jewish themed movies" and see what comes up.

I wondered if any of you have a recommendation for a Jewish-themed
humorous film, preferably that the whole family would enjoy.

I'd like to augment our DVD section.

Thank you!

Naomi

2011-11-29 Thread Petite Safranit
Yes, the Frisco Kid is a terrific movie, however, there are some scenes
not suitable for the /whole/ family.
