[ha-Safran] Research Question

2016-02-26 Thread Robin Gluck
Hello,

I have a student who is researching Jewish power and privilege pre 1929.
He is asking the question: How have Jews justified superiority to
"inferior" classes or races pre 1929? I know this is a broad question! If
anyone can direct me to specific research that might narrow this topic or
address this question, I would be very appreciative.

Shabbat shalom,

Robin Gluck

[ha-Safran] Collection Analysis Tool for LC Classification

2014-11-19 Thread Robin Gluck
Hello,

Does anyone know of a free online collection analysis tool for LC
classification collections? Something that is similar to Titlewave for Dewey.

Thanks for your help,

Re: [ha-Safran] Library-related chessed activities?

2014-05-22 Thread Robin Gluck
Hi Susan,

Two chesed activities come to mind that may applicable. The first is
the African
Library Project http://www.africanlibraryproject.org/. Several years
ago I worked with a group of students who wanted to do a book drive. Using
the structure and guidelines provided by the Africa Library Project, we
gathered 1,000 books, raised $500 and created a library in a small
community center in Africa. The project was very rewarding for the
students. The second is tutoring. The 8th grade students at our school
are trained by the Jewish Coalition for Literacy, a local group that
matches trained reading tutors with schools. After their training they
serve as reading tutors once a week for 8 weeks in a local second grade
classroom. Our students select age appropriate books to read with the
students from our library.

Re: [ha-Safran] Common Core Questions for Jewish Day School Librarians

2013-12-02 Thread Robin Gluck
Hi Ben,

1. We are using the Common Core Standards and NETS-S at the Oakland Hebrew
Day School library. The standards for research, reading, and research and
opinion writing inform the library curriculum.

2. I think the standards are an excellent tool for developing integrated
lessons with content area teachers in general and Judaic studies. The
lessons I do that address standards these teachers are trying to meet helps
them, and the collaboration with these teachers benefits the library.

Hope that helps.

 Dear Safranim,
These are questions addressed to librarians working in Jewish
 day schools in the U.S.A.
 1. Are you using the Common Core Standards in your Jewish day school
 library? If so, how?
 2. And if you are using them, how helpful do you think they are or aren't
to balance the library curriculum that you teach?
Please answer these questions if they directly apply to you now.
Thank you and Chag Urim Sameach (post-Thanksgivukah),
